Inflamed Obstructive Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Causes Ocular Surface Inflammation.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the primary causes of evaporative dry eye. Stagnation of meibum induces an unstable tear film, thus resulting in shortened tear film breakup time and superficial punctate keratopathy (SPK) in the lower cornea and punctate staining of lower bulbar conjunctiva. MGD is sometimes accompanied with inflammation (termed "meibomitis") via the proliferation of bacteria in the meibomian gland and eyelash area. Meibomitis is strongly related to ocular surface inflammation such as corneal cellular infiltrates and neovascularization, SPK, and conjunctivitis. It i

Improving awareness, identification, and management of meibomian gland dysfunction.

Ocular surface disorder--and dry eye, in particular--is a leading reason for visits to eye care professionals. It has been generally accepted that meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of evaporative dry eye, as well as being associated with aqueous-deficient dry eye. Yet, researchers and clinicians have lacked a global consensus on the definition of MGD, its epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management. Various systemic diseases and medications have been associated with the progression of both dry eye and MGD, as have several ocular disorders beyond those directly affecting th

Meibomian gland dysfunction and tear film abnormalities in rosacea.

In order to determine the relationship between meibomian gland dysfunction and tear film abnormalities in rosacea, tear film flow and stability and meibomian gland function were assessed in 43 consecutive patients. Schirmer, tear film break-up time, and meibomian gland function values in patients with ocular rosacea (n = 28) were found to be significantly decreased as compared with those of the patients with only cutaneous involvement and control patients (p > 0.05). In patients with dermatologic rosacea (n = 15) these values were not different from those of the age- and sex-matched controls (

Ocular evaporation in meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye.

BACKGROUND: Secretions from the meibomian gland are believed to be important in reducing ocular surface water evaporation and preventing dry eye. Patients with blepharitis frequently have meibomian gland dysfunction with loss of meibomian glands (drop out). The authors hypothesized that dry eye that often occurs in patients with chronic blepharitis is secondary to increased evaporation associated with gland loss. METHODS: The authors measured the ocular surface water evaporation and tear osmolarity of patients with meibomian gland drop out and patients with gland drop out with a low Schirmer

Recent advances in age-related meibomian gland dysfunction (ARMGD).

Meibomian glands (MGs), located within the tarsal plate of the eyelid, secrete meibum which is the lipid-rich secretion necessary for stabilizing the tear film and preventing tear evaporation. Changes in the quality and quantity of meibum produced causes MG dysfunction (MGD), the leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease (EDED). MGD is an underdiagnosed disease and it is estimated that, in the US, approximately 70 % of the population over 60 have MGD. Three forms of MGD occur based on their meibum secretion: hyposecretory, obstructive, and hypersecretory MGD. The pathophysiology of MGD rema

[Meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye: Diagnosis and treatment].

The onset of dry eye complaints is often a result of Meibomian gland dysfunction and its diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. In the case of Meibomian gland dysfunction, there is an increased evaporation of the tear film due to the abnormal secretion of lipids that cannot spread on the ocular surface. The treatment of dry eye complaints associated with Meibomian gland dysfunction with tear supplementation is usually ineffective and only results in an intermittent relief of complaints. Meibomian gland dysfunction is often associated with Demodex infestation of the eyelids, and eradic

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: Recent Progress Worldwide and in Japan.

In this review, the importance of Japanese research on meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is discussed from the perspective of global academic and clinical research on this topic. Many Japanese physicians and researchers have contributed to recent worldwide progress in various fields of MGD research, including pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapy. In Japan, recent studies in the field of pathophysiology have provided direct evidence for the hypothesis that lipid composition and reactive oxygen species play a crucial role in the development and worsening of MGD. In the field of

Organotypic culture model of mouse meibomian gland as a screening platform for risk factors related to meibomian gland dysfunction.

PURPOSE: Meibomian glands (MGs) are crucial for maintaining tear film stability and ocular surface health. Here, we aim to establish a novel organotypic culture model of MGs and explore the risk factors of MG dysfunction (MGD). METHODS: We developed a novel organotypic culture model for MGs at the air-liquid interface. The viability and cell proliferation of MGs were assessed using CCK-8, immunofluorescence, and qPCR. Lipid accumulation was evaluated by Nile red staining and microscopic examination. Protein expression levels were evaluated by immunofluorescence and Western blot assay. EdU ass

The effects of age and dysfunction on meibomian gland population dynamics.

PURPOSE: While meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is widely recognized as a major cause of evaporative dry eye disease, little is known about normal gland differentiation and lipid synthesis or the mechanism underlying gland atrophy and abnormal lipid secretion. The purpose of this study was to use single-cell and spatial transcriptomics to probe changes in cell composition, differentiation, and gene expression associated with two murine models of MGD: age-related gland atrophy in wild-type mice and altered meibum quality in acyl-CoA wax alcohol acyltransferase 2 (Awat2) knockout (KO) mice.
