Meibomian glands (MGs) secrete lipid (meibum) onto the ocular surface to form the outermost layer of the tear film. Proper meibum secretion is essential for stabilizing the tear film, reducing aqueous tear evaporation, and maintaining the homeostasis of the ocular surface. Atrophy of MG as occurs with aging, leads to reduction of meibum secretion, loss of ocular surface homeostasis and evaporative dry eye disease (EDED). Since MGs are holocrine glands, secretion of meibum requires continuous self-renewal of lipid-secreting acinar meibocytes by stem/progenitor cells, whose proliferative potenti

As the main source of various lipids, the meibomian glands are involved in the formation of lipid layer of the tear film and the maintenance of homeostasis of the ocular surface. This process is directly dependent on the chemical composition and thickness of the lipid layer. In addition to lipid components, the meibum also contains various proteins that affect the properties of the tear film. The introduction of various modifications of mass spectrometry into clinical practice is a new diagnostic approach that allows obtaining information about the composition of meibomian glands secretion and

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) on the meibomian glands, ocular surface, and tear parameters.
METHODS: The study included 59 individuals (32 subjects with OSAHS, 27 control subjects) who underwent polysomnography in the Chest Diseases Clinic. The right eyes of all individuals were evaluated in the Ophthalmology Clinic. The first noninvasive tear break-up time (f-NTBUT) and the average noninvasive tear break-up time were measured, and Schirmer test was applied. PURPOSE: To analyze how ocular surface parameters correlate to presence of pterygium and investigate the possible impact of pterygia on tear film findings and meibomian glands findings.
METHODS: We investigated objective parameters of the ocular surface such as conjunctival hyperemia, tear film stability and volume, meibomian gland dysfunction, dry eye disease, corneal topography comparing healthy individuals and correlating with the pterygium clinical presentation.
RESULTS: A total of 83 patients were included. Corneal astigmatism induction was 2.65 ± 2.52 D (0.4-11.8). The impact of pteryg

OBJECTIVE: Meibomian gland (MG) tumors are common in dogs. Papillomaviruses have been detected in epithelial neoplasms across species, including those arising from the human MG, but their role in the development of canine MG tumors has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether Canine Papillomavirus (CPV) contributes to MG tumorigenesis.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) was performed to identify cases of canine MG tumors submitted between 2019 and 2024. DNA was extracted from archival FFPE tissue scrolls, and PC

Objective: To explore short-term effect of intense pulsed light (IPL) combined with meibomian gland expression in treating meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: This study was a prospective, randomized, double-masked, controlled study. Forty-four MGD patients were enrolled in the study and received three consecutive IPL treatments with an interval of 4 weeks. One eye of each patient was randomly assigned as the study eye receiving the IPL therapy with an energy of 14-16 J/cm(2), and the fellow eye was as the control eye receiving a placebo therapy with 0 J/cm(2). Human Meibomian gland secretions (MGS) are a complex mixture of diverse lipids that are produced by Meibomian glands that are located in the upper and the lower eyelids. During blinking, MGS are excreted onto the ocular surface, spread and mix with aqueous tears that are produced by lachrymal glands, and form an outermost part of an ocular structure called "the tear film" (TF). The main physiological role of TF is to protect delicate ocular structures (such as cornea and conjunctiva) from desiccating. Lipids that are produced by Meibomian glands are believed to "seal" the aqueous portion of TF

Parkinson's disease is characterized by motor dysfunction, affecting blink frequency in the eyes. Reduced blinking and use of anticholinergic medications result in dry eye disease (DED) in these patients. This unique case had complete meibomian gland loss seen on meibography with reduced blinking and lacrimal gland function as well attributed to Parkinson's and its treatment. The autoimmune workup was negative, and the final diagnosis of drug-induced DED was made. The patient was managed with ocular lubricants and anti-inflammatory eye drops.

PURPOSE: Despite extensive research on meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in adults, studies on paediatric populations remain limited. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the morphological characteristics of meibomian glands (MGs) in healthy children, focusing on identifying baseline features and factors influencing gland structure and function. Understanding these characteristics is critical for early detection of MGD, which can lead to ocular surface disorders such as dry eye disease (DED). By addressing the existing knowledge gap in paediatric populations, this review see

UNLABELLED: Salzmann's nodular degeneration (SND) is a corneal disease characterized by superficial subepithelial fibrosis. The exact pathophysiological mechanism of corneal damage in SND is unclear. It is likely related to the disruption of the structural integrity of corneal epithelial cells due to chronic inflammation and impaired homeostasis of the ocular surface.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate tear film (TF) status and meibomian gland (MG) function in SND.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 196 patients (386 eyes) with typical clinical features of SND (the main group) and 5

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic abnormality of the Meibomian glands (MGs) that is recognized as the leading cause of evaporative dry eye worldwide. Despite its prevalence, however, the pathophysiology of MGD remains elusive, and effective disease management continues to be a challenge. In the past 50 years, different models have been developed to illustrate the pathophysiological nature of MGD and the underlying disease mechanisms. An understanding of these models is crucial if researchers are to select an appropriate model to address specific questions related to MGD and to dev
