Visual short-term memory deficits associated with GBA mutation and Parkinson's disease.

Individuals with mutation in the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GBA) gene are at significantly high risk of developing Parkinson's disease with cognitive deficit. We examined whether visual short-term memory impairments, long associated with patients with Parkinson's disease, are also present in GBA-positive individuals-both with and without Parkinson's disease. Precision of visual working memory was measured using a serial order task in which participants observed four bars, each of a different colour and orientation, presented sequentially at screen centre. Afterwards, they were asked

Long short-term memory for apnea detection based on Heart Rate Variability.

The main drive force in apnea current diagnostic is to reduce overwhelming number of sleep disorders candidates by means of very simple-to-use, comfortable and cheap methodology. The proposed framework is based only on automatic analysis of electrocardiogram signal. The feature extraction stage was performed using methods of Heart Rate Variability and Detrended Fluctuation analysis. Feature-spaces formed using these two methods were used as input to a Long Short-Term Memory Artificial Neural Network chosen for its capability to find temporally dependencies in the data. The framework was evalua

Is short-term memory for discrete arm movements impaired in Huntington's disease?

Explicit memory for arm movements was investigated in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and normal controls (NC). Participants recalled the end-position of arm movements determined by the examiner following an immediate or a 30-second delay that was either unfilled or filled with a motor distractor task. Movement error was measured in absolute (AE), variable (VE), and constant (CE) error. When performance was measured in AE, HD patients were impaired equally across delays compared to controls, regardless of whether the delay was filled or unfilled. HD patients did not demonstrate a direc

[Short term memory disturbances in paranoid schizophrenia--results of assessments with pictogram].

Short term memory (STM) was assessed in schizophrenic patients. 30 schizophrenic subjects and 30 healthy controls were examined with the pictogram test. The analysis of the results suggests that there is a disturbance in abstracting information in paranoid schizophrenia. Schizophrenic patients are not able to keep the limits of a concept of abstract information, while external information causes a fixation of the attention on stimuli, which are not important for the whole process. The process of decoding information does not proceed according to a certain recall strategy, but is determined by

The neural response in short-term visual recognition memory for perceptual conjunctions.

Short-term visual memory has been widely studied in humans and animals using delayed matching paradigms. The present study used positron emission tomography (PET) to determine the neural substrates of delayed matching to sample for complex abstract patterns over a 5-s delay. More specifically, the study assessed any differential neural response associated with remembering individual perceptual properties (color only and shape only) compared to conjunction between these properties. Significant activations associated with short-term visual memory (all memory conditions compared to perceptuomotor

Thalamofrontal synaptic weakening underlies short-term memory deficits from adolescent NMDAR hypofunction.

Thalamofrontal (TF) dysconnectivity is one of the most consistent circuit-level abnormalities reported in patients with schizophrenia and is linked to deficits in short-term memory (STM). However, the biological mechanisms underlying TF weakening remain unclear. Here, we show that repeated adolescent N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonism produces STM deficits by impairing TF synaptic transmission. In mice repeatedly exposed to ketamine, STM impairment coincided with reduced release probability and attenuated short-term depression at mediodorsal thalamus (MD) → dorsomedial prefrontal

Prediction of Pathological Tremor Signals Using Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks.

Previous implementations of closed-loop peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) strategies have provided evidence about the effect of the stimulation timing on tremor reduction. However, these strategies have used traditional signal processing techniques that only consider phase prediction and might not model the non-stationary behavior of tremor. Here, we tested the use of long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to predict tremor signals using kinematic data recorded from Essential Tremor (ET) patients. A dataset comprising wrist flexion-extension data from 12 ET patients was pre-proces

Spatial attention and spatial short term memory in PSP and Parkinson's disease.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by deterioration in motor, oculomotor and cognitive function. A key clinical feature of PSP is the progressive paralysis of eye movements, most notably for vertical saccades. These oculomotor signs can be subtle, however, and PSP is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease (PD), in its early stages. Although some of the clinical features of PD and PSP overlap, they are distinct disorders with differing underlying pathological processes, responses to treatment and prognoses. One key difference lies in the effect

Short-term Memory in Childhood Dyslexia: Deficient Serial Order in Multiple Modalities.

In children with dyslexia, deficits in working memory have not been well-specified. We assessed second-grade children with dyslexia, with and without concomitant specific language impairment, and children with typical development. Immediate serial recall of lists of phonological (non-word), lexical (digit), spatial (location) and visual (shape) items were included. For the latter three modalities, we used not only standard span but also running span tasks, in which the list length was unpredictable to limit mnemonic strategies. Non-word repetition tests indicated a phonological memory deficit

Functional Alterations in Order Short-Term Memory Networks in Adults With Dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterized not only by reading impairment but also by short-term memory (STM) deficits, and this particularly for the retention of serial order information. Here, we explored the functional neural correlates associated with serial order STM performance of adults with dyslexia for verbal and visual STM tasks. Relative to a group of age-matched controls, the dyslexic group showed abnormal activation in a network associated with order STM encompassing the right intraparietal and superior frontal sulcus, and this for both verbal and visual order STM conditions. This study highlights

Functional connectivity during top-down modulation of visual short-term memory representations.

Recent evidence has revealed that short-lived internal representations held in visual short-term memory (VSTM) can be modulated by top-down control via retrospective attention which impacts subsequent behavioral performance. However, the functional inter-regional interactions underlying these top-down modulatory effects are not fully characterized. Here we used event-related functional magnetic imaging to investigate whether the strength of functional connectivity between the frontal cortex and posterior visual areas varies with the efficacy of top-down modulation of memory traces. Top-down mo

Neural mechanisms of semantic interference and false recognition in short-term memory.

Decades of research using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm have demonstrated that episodic memory is vulnerable to semantic distortion, and neuroimaging investigations of this phenomenon have shown dissociations between the neural mechanisms subserving true and false retrieval from long-term memory. Recently, false short-term memories have also been demonstrated, with false recognition of items related in meaning to memoranda encoded less than 5s earlier. Semantic interference is also evident in short-term memory, such that correct rejection of related lures is slowed relative to co

Phonological similarity neighborhoods and children's short-term memory: typical development and dyslexia.

In this article, we explore whether structural characteristics of the phonological lexicon affect serial recall in typically developing and dyslexic children. Recent work has emphasized the importance of long-term phonological representations in supporting short-term memory performance. This occurs via redintegration (reconstruction) processes, which show significant neighborhood density effects in adults. We assessed whether serial recall in children was affected by neighborhood density in word and nonword tasks. Furthermore, we compared dyslexic children with typically developing children of

Oscillatory synchrony between human extrastriate areas during visual short-term memory maintenance.

How do we keep an object in mind? Based on evidence from animal electrophysiology and human brain-imaging techniques, it is commonly held that short-term memory relies on sustained activity in a network distributed over sensory and prefrontal cortices. How does neural firing persist in such a distributed network in the absence of visual input? Hebb's influential but so far unproved proposal, developed more than 50 years ago, is that sustained activation in short-term memory networks is maintained by reverberating activity in neuronal loops. We hypothesized that synchronized oscillatory activit

[Effect of increasing loading of short-term image memory on cat behavior].

The dependence of the short-term image memory on time intervals between separate tests was studied in cats with the method of delayed reactions. Shortening of the interval from 3-5 min to 30-40 sec caused in all experimental animals a disturbance of delayed reactions to complex and visual perception of food's location; the time of approaching the food increased, emotional stress hightened, intensive scratching of the body, licking the hair and mewing appeared. The latter reactions are considered as a manifestation of the brain mechanisms of autoregulation aimed at prevention of neurosis develo

Verbal short-term memory in developmental dyslexia: The role of the temporoparietal area.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is characterized by difficulties in reading but includes a general verbal short-term memory (vSTM) dysfunction. However, the behavioral and brain basis of vSTM deficits within DD are unknown. 81 children with DD and 17 typically developing (TD) children completed MRI and a verbal repetition task in which length (6 and 9-syllable phrases) and meaningfulness of phrases varied (more or less meaningful phrases). A battery of reading, phonological, and vSTM tests was administered to all children with DD. Children with DD had impaired repetition compared to TD, especially

The acute effect of Hypericum perforatum on short-term memory in healthy adults.

RATIONALE: Over-the-counter drugs containing Hypericum perforatum (H. perforatum) have been argued to improve memory and sustained attention. So far, these claims have not been supported in human studies. However, previous studies used rather high dosages, and little is known about the acute effect of small dosages. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether an acute treatment with Remotiv 500 and Remotiv 250 (500 or 250 mg of H. perforatum quantified to either 1 or 0.5 mg of hypericin) improved memory and sustained attention, as well as mood and state anxiety in healthy adults. METHOD: A single dosage
