Social anxiety disorder and memory for positive feedback.

Clinical theorists postulate that individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) display memory biases such that recall of social events becomes more negative with time; however, alternative memory models have also been proposed. Research has focused predominantly on selective recall of negative information with inconsistent findings. The goal of the current study was to examine potential biases in recall of positive social feedback. Individuals with SAD (n = 59) and nonanxious community controls (n = 63) engaged in an unexpected public speaking task and received standardized positive or neutr

Control over interfering memories in eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have suggested that patients suffering from either anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) exhibit abnormal performance in the ability to control cognitive interference in response selection. METHOD: We assessed the status of cognitive control in episodic memory by addressing the ability to inhibit interfering memories. To this end, we used the retrieval-practice paradigm, which allows for measuring both the beneficial and the detrimental effects of memory practice. The latter phenomenon, known as retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF), is thought to reflect an

Assistive technologies at home for people with a memory disorder.

The aim of this study was to assess in practice whether assistive technologies support and facilitate the work of a family caregiver or care staff, and whether these technologies support the independence of a person with a memory disorder. A comprehensive set of supportive devices and alarm systems were experimentally tested in the care of five test subjects in an assisted living facility by eight nurses, and in the care of four test subjects in a home environment by three family caregivers and one care team. Questionnaires, diaries and logged data were used to evaluate the benefits of the dev

Episodic memories in anxiety disorders: clinical implications.

The aim of this review is to summarize research on the emerging role of episodic memories in the context of anxiety disorders (AD). The available literature on explicit, autobiographical, and episodic memory function in AD including neuroimaging studies is critically discussed. We describe the methodological diversity of episodic memory research in AD and discuss the need for novel tests to measure episodic memory in a clinical setting. We argue that alterations in episodic memory functions might contribute to the etiology of AD. We further explain why future research on the interplay between

Autobiographical memory specificity in dissociative identity disorder.

A lack of adequate access to autobiographical knowledge has been related to psychopathology. More specifically, patients suffering from depression or a history of trauma have been found to be characterized by overgeneral memory, in other words, they show a relative difficulty in retrieving a specific event from memory located in time and place. Previous studies of overgeneral memory have not included patients with dissociative disorders. These patients are interesting to consider, as they are hypothesized to have the ability to selectively compartmentalize information linked to negative emotio

Pharmacological treatment for memory disorder in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of the Cochrane review "Pharmacologic treatment for memory disorder in multiple sclerosis" (first published in The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 10).Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated, inflammatory, demyelinating, neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) and can cause both neurological and neuropsychological disability. Both demyelination and axonal and neuronal loss are believed to contribute to MS-related cognitive impairment. Memory disorder is one of the most frequent cognitive dysfunctions and presents a considerable bur

Pharmacologic treatment for memory disorder in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Memory disorder is one of the most frequent cognitive impairment and has a great negative impact on the quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A few pharmacologic agents appear to be effective to memory disorder in patients with MS in some existing randomised controlled trials. OBJECTIVES: To assess the absolute and comparative efficacy, tolerability and safety of pharmacologic treatments for memory disorder in adult patients with MS. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Multiple Sclerosis Group's Trials Register (17 January 2011), PsycINFO (January 1980 -

Overgeneral autobiographical memory and depressive disorder in children.

Overgeneral autobiographical memory seems to be a stable cognitive marker in depressed adults and may predict persistence of depression. This study investigated whether depressive disorders in children are associated with overgeneral memory. Sixty children (ages 9 to 13 years) participated; 15 were diagnosed with lifetime depressive disorder, 25 had other lifetime psychiatric disorders, and 20 had no history of psychiatric disorder. Depressed children gave fewer specific memories compared to children with no or other psychiatric disorders, even after controlling for depressive mood, potential

Declarative memory impairment in pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired verbal declarative memory has been proposed as a trait marker for adult bipolar disorder. However, similar impairments in juvenile-onset bipolar disorder have not been yet documented. Here, we assessed declarative memory in a large sample of clinically well-characterized children with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Forty-one children and adolescents with bipolar disorder [21 bipolar I disorder (BP-I), 10 bipolar II disorder (BP-II), and 10 bipolar disorder, not otherwise specified (BP-NOS)] and 17 demographically matched healthy participants completed a standardized learning

Verbal learning and memory in schizotypal personality disorder.

The investigation of cognitive deficits in patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is important both to establish commonalities between SPD and schizophrenia and to clarify the significance of these cognitive deficits for schizophrenic disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine verbal learning and memory with the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) in a group of patients with SPD (n=24) and a group of patients with personality disorders other than SPD (OPD; n=25). The results indicated that SPD patients learned significantly fewer words with practice on the CVLT than O

Memory and awareness in a patient with multiple personality disorder.

We studied an individual with multiple personality disorder in whom each of several personalities claimed to have no direct awareness of the others and to be unable to consciously remember the experiences of other personalities. A broad selection of implicit and explicit memory tests was used to determine the extent to which one personality had access to knowledge acquired by another and the circumstances in which that knowledge would be expressed. The implicit assessment of memory was a necessary but not sufficient condition for demonstrating interpersonality access. The degree of compartment

The role of CART peptide in learning and memory: A potential therapeutic target in memory-related disorders.

Cocaine and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) mRNA and peptide are vastly expressed in both cortical and subcortical brain areas and are involved in critical cognitive functions. CART peptide (CARTp), described in reward-related brain structures, regulates drug-induced learning and memory, and its role appears specific to psychostimulants. However, many other drugs of abuse, such as alcohol, opiates, nicotine, and caffeine, have been shown to alter the expression levels of CART mRNA and peptides in brain structures directly or indirectly associated with learning and memory processes. How

Sensory-specific and fractional disorders of recent memory in man. II. Unilateral loss of tactile recent memory.

Three patients were found to have unilateral tactile recent memory loss on examination. In two patients the loss occurred in the right hand and was accompanied by a disorder of verbal recent memory; in the third patient the loss occurred in the left hand and was not accompanied by any other disturbance in recent memory. An acute unilateral lesion, either structural or functional, in the medial temporal lobe contralateral to the tactile recent memory disturbance was the common denominator in all three cases. The proper methods for diagnosing a unilateral tactile disturbance of recent memory and

The Role of Tissue Resident Memory Cells in Immunodermatological Disorders.

Tissue-resident memory T cells (TRMs) are a distinct memory T-cell subset that permanently reside in tissues such as the skin. In chronic immune-mediated dermatoses, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and vitiligo, TRMs are implicated in site-specific "disease memory," contributing to persistence and relapse at previously affected sites. This review synthesizes emerging concepts on TRMs in chronic inflammatory skin diseases and discusses clinical and translational implications, including TRM-targeted therapies. Original human, animal, or in vitro studies evaluating TRMs in the pathogenesi

Facial memory deficits in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol may lead to a range of neurobehavioral effects, including impaired learning and memory. Although children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) exhibit both verbal and nonverbal memory impairments, their memory for faces has not been as thoroughly investigated and the extent literature provides inconsistent results. The aim of the current study was to determine whether difficulties in face memory exist in children with FASD and whether the difficulties are mediated by task demands. To address this, we used two measures of immediate and delayed facial recogni

[Memory disorders due to extreme exposures and their pharmacological correction].

The review contains the present-day data on new neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of learning and memory processes disturbances induced by such extreme factors as microwaves, hypoxia [correction of hyghproxia], motion sickness, electro-convulsive shock, etc. The main attention is concentrated on the role of some nootropic drugs in preventing the memory-impairing effect of all these extreme factors. The current concept of the mechanisms action of the nootropics in these extreme conditions is discussed.

[Memory disorders due to extreme impacts and their pharmacological correction].

The review encompasses the author's and literary data concerning effects of various extreme impacts, i.e. SHF electromagnetic radiation, motion sickness, hypoxia, etc. on the cognitive and memorizing processes in humans and animals. Potentials for pharmacological correction, with nootropic drugs in the first place, of anamnestic disorders consequent to various extreme impacts are considered. Possible mechanisms of the protective action of pharmacological substances are analyzed.

[Short term memory and severe language disorders in the child].

Memory, and particularly short-term memory or "working memory" (Baddeley), is involved in language acquisition in children. We have studied short-term memory, with verbal-and non verbal tests, of 8 children suffering from developmental dysphasia compared with other ones, matched in terms of age and performance I.Q. (W.I.S.C.-R.). The digit span did not significantly differ in the two groups, while the visuo-spatial span was lower in the dysphasic group. The memorization of a list of monosyllabic words by dysphasic children was poor in the absence of visual presentation and improved by it. Diff

Disorders of memory of motor sequences in cerebral palsied children.

In 74 children (32 boys, 42 girls) between 7 and 14 years of age with different forms of cerebral palsy (mainly spastic ones) the motor memory was tested with a sequence of movements which had to be remembered at once, after 24 hours and after 5 days. The normal levels were determined by testing 21 healthy children matched as to age as control as (10 boys, 11 girls). Each exercise was evaluated separately as follows: the movement is performed correctly in the right sequence, 2 points; the movement is performed in a wrong sequence, but in the correct group of three exercises, 1 point; the seque
