Correlates of HIV and STI Testing in Rural Southern Substance Using-Men who have Sex with Men: A Behavioral Model for Health Services Use Approach.

While research shows rural men who have sex with men (MSM) are less likely to get HIV and STI tested compared to urban MSM, research has not identified which groups of rural MSM are more or less likely to get tested. There is a dearth of literature of within-group differences of HIV/STI testing among rural MSM, especially among substance using-MSM who are more vulnerable to HIV/STI infections. This study examined factors associated with HIV and STI testing among rural substance-using MSM in the South, guided by the Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use. Participants (N = 284) comp

Health, drugs and service use among deprived single men: comparing (subgroups) of single male welfare recipients against employed single men in Amsterdam.

OBJECTIVES: To aid public health policy in preventing severe social exclusion (like homelessness) and promoting social inclusion (like labour market participation), we aimed to quantify (unmet) health needs of an expectedly vulnerable population on which little was known about: single male welfare recipients (SIM-welfare). One of the main policy questions was: is there need to promote access to healthcare for this specific group? DESIGN: A cross-sectional study incorporating peer-to-peer methodology to approach and survey SIM-welfare. Sociodemographics, prevalence of ill health, harmful drug

Preferences for models of sexual health service delivery among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Australia: a discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study explores preferences for different models of sexual health services among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Australia, using discrete choice experiments (DCEs). METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from November 2022 to February 2023, targeting three groups: (1) gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men living with HIV; (2) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users; and (3) non-PrEP users. Health of men, women, and children in post-trafficking services in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam: an observational cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Trafficking is a crime of global proportions involving extreme forms of exploitation and abuse. Yet little research has been done of the health risks and morbidity patterns for men, women, and children trafficked for various forms of forced labour. METHODS: We carried out face-to-face interviews with a consecutive sample of individuals entering 15 post-trafficking services in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. We asked participants about living and working conditions, experience of violence, and health outcomes. We measured symptoms of anxiety and depression with the Hopkins Symptom

Health Care Stigma and HIV/Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Service Uptake Among Cisgender Men and Gender-Diverse Individuals Who Have Sex with Men in Five Asian Countries: Implications for Differentiated Service Delivery.

Health care stigma remains a key barrier to HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, yet its effects may differ across health care systems. We examined associations between health care stigma and HIV/STI prevention service uptake across five Asian countries. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in early 2020 among cisgender men and gender-diverse individuals who have sex with men in Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Outcomes were HIV testing and STI testing in the past 12 months, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation. Anticipated stigma was de

Mental Health Service Utilization Among Young Black Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in HIV Care: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YB-GBMSM) face multiple psychosocial stressors, and are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Mental health care engagement is a promising avenue for addressing these disparities. To date, rates of mental health service utilization have not been examined specifically in this population. We conducted a retrospective cohort study among YB-GBMSM receiving care in a Ryan White-funded HIV care center that includes co-located HIV and mental health services. Of 435 unique YB-GBMSM patients, mental health concerns were identified in n = 191

"That would be good but most men are afraid of coming to the clinic": Men and women's perspectives on strategies to increase male involvement in women's reproductive health services in rural Uganda.

In Uganda, increasing male involvement in reproductive health services may improve women's access to care. The purpose of this study was to explore factors influencing male support for women's reproductive health services and to elicit suggestions for strategies to increase male involvement. In 2008-2009, focus groups ( N = 76) were conducted with men and women in a rural hospital in Uganda. A content analysis approach was used for data analysis. Our findings point to the need for multi-level approaches that educate and mobilize men, while improving quality of care at the facility level to inc

Experiences with health care services and HIV testing after sexual assault in cisgender gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men and transgender people.

OBJECTIVES: This qualitative sub-study aimed to explore how cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (cis-GBMSM) and transgender people who reported non-consensual sex (NCS) accessed health care services, what barriers they faced, and how this experience influenced subsequent HIV testing. METHODS: SELPHI is an online randomized controlled trial evaluating both acceptability and efficiency of HIV-self testing among cis-GBMSM and transgender people. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed through a framework analysis, as a qualita

Multidisciplinary providers' perspectives on engaging young black, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men living with HIV in mental health care services.

Young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YB-GBMSM) living with HIV are at high risk for psychological stressors and comorbidities. We sought to gain the perspectives of multidisciplinary providers (including HIV care, mental health care, and social service providers) on their experiences with engaging YB-GBMSM in mental health care within comprehensive HIV primary care centers that included both types of services on-site. We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with fifteen providers in two clinics, and analyzed the qualitative data using a thematic analysis approac

Chemsex-related drug use and its association with health outcomes in men who have sex with men: a cross-sectional analysis of Antidote clinic service data.

PURPOSE: Chemsex-related drug use (CDU) is an escalating public health issue among men who have sex with men (MSM), associated with significant physical, biomedical and psychosocial harm. Few interventions exist to help MSM engaging in chemsex and little data exist on which to build. This cross-sectional analysis, using data from Antidote, the UK's only lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender specialist drug service, aims to remedy this paucity of data. METHODS: Modified Poisson regression was used to assess associations between CDU and a range of health outcomes; CDU+ subanalysis disaggregat

Utilization of Sexually Transmitted Infection Services at 2 Health Facilities Targeting Men Who Have Sex With Men in South Africa: A Retrospective Analysis of Operational Data.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a key population, particularly vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, but there are limited data on health programs targeting MSM in Africa. This study aims to describe the utilization of nongovernmental organization-supported sexual health services for MSM at 2 public sector health facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed routine data over the period of January 2014 to June 2016. We report on service utilization for STI syndromes, HIV testing, and the antiretroviral therapy (ART) prog

Relationship between disclosure of same-sex sexual activity to providers, HIV diagnosis and sexual health services for men who have sex with men in Vancouver, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Men who have sex with men (MSM) report challenges to accessing appropriate health care. We sought to understand the relationship between disclosure of same-sex sexual activity to a health care practitioner (HCP), sexual behaviour and measures of sexual health care. METHODS: Participants recruited through community venues and events completed a questionnaire and provided a blood sample. This analysis includes only individuals with self-reported HIV negative or unknown serostatus. We compared participants who had disclosed having same-sex partners with those who had not using chi-sq

Health system and personal barriers resulting in decreased utilization of HIV and STD testing services among at-risk black men who have sex with men in Massachusetts.

Testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STD) remains a cornerstone of public health prevention interventions. This analysis was designed to explore the frequency of testing, as well as health system and personal barriers to testing, among a community-recruited sample of Black men who have sex with men (MSM) at risk for HIV and STDs. Black MSM (n = 197) recruited via modified respondent-driven sampling between January and July 2008 completed an interviewer-administered assessment, with optional voluntary HIV counseling and testing. Logistic regression procedures examined factor

What are the facilitators and barriers for Asian-born gay and bisexual men to access sexual health services in Australia: an integrative review.

This integrative qualitative review examines barriers and facilitators affecting sexual health service access among Asian-born men who are gay, bisexual, or who have sex with men in Australia. Despite advancements in HIV prevention, this group remains under-represented in research and health care, contributing to health disparities. The analysis identified a 'socioecological cascade' where external, structural-level forces such as pervasive stigma and perceived threat of health-related visa requirements are progressively internalised, culminating in individual-level barriers to care. Using fatherhood to engage men in HIV services via maternal, neonatal and child health entry points in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, uptake of HIV services remains lower amongst men compared to women, resulting in poorer clinical outcomes. Several factors contribute to this situation, including stigma, confidentiality concerns, inconvenient clinic operating hours, fear of an HIV-positive test result, and long-waiting times. Additionally, women living with HIV are frequently identified whilst accessing other routine services, particularly antenatal and well-baby care. Novel approaches and strategies are needed to increase men's routine utilization of health services. For many men, fatherhood is

Older men with bipolar disorder diagnosed in early and later life: Physical health morbidity and general hospital service use.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) has been associated with greater health morbidity burden, but it is unclear if this association is affected by age at the time of diagnosis and how this might impact on the use of general hospital services. METHODS: Cross-sectional study investigating the prevalence of common medical morbidities among participants with early (EOBD) and late onset diagnosis of BD (LOBD - age at diagnosis ≥ 60 years) derived from a community-representative sample of 37,183 men aged 65-85 years. A case-control study of men with non-gonococcal urethritis at Auckland Sexual Health Service: rates of detection of Mycoplasma genitalium.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified Mycoplasma genitalium as a cause of urethritis in men. As there is no New Zealand data, a case-control study was conducted to determine whether this organism is a significant cause of urethritis in men presenting to Auckland Sexual Health Service. METHODS: Enrollment for the study commenced in March 2006 and finished in February 2008. Inclusion criteria for cases of non-gonococcal urethritis were onset of urethritis symptoms within one month confirmed by urethral Gram staining showing >or=10 polymorphonuclear leucocytes per high-powered field. Acceptability of integrating mental health and substance use care within sexual health services among young sexual and gender minority men in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Despite well-established evidence showing that young sexual and gender minority (SGM) men experience disproportionate mental health and substance use inequities, few sexual health services provide mental health and substance use care. This qualitative study examined the experiences and perspectives about integrated care models within sexual health services among young SGM men experiencing mental health and substance use challenges. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 SGM men aged 18-30 years who reported using substances with sex in Vancouver, Canada. Interv

Using an intersectionality-based approach to evaluate mental health services use among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

AIMS: To cope with homonegativity-generated stress, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) use more mental health services (MHS) compared with heterosexual men. Most previous research on MHS among GBM uses data from largely white HIV-negative samples. Using an intersectionality-based approach, we evaluated the concomitant impact of racialization and HIV stigma on MHS use among GBM, through the mediating role of perceived discrimination (PD). METHODS: We used baseline data from 2371 GBM enrolled in the Engage cohort study, collected between 2017 and 2019, in Montreal, Toronto
