Effects of the Menstrual Cycle on Neurological Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The menstrual cycle involves recurrent fluctuations in hormone levels and temperature via neuroendocrine feedback loops. This paper reviews the impact of the menstrual cycle on several common neurological conditions, including migraine, seizures, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and Parkinson's disease. RECENT FINDINGS: The ovarian steroid hormones, estrogen and progesterone, have protean effects on central nervous system functioning that can impact the likelihood, severity, and presentation of many neurological diseases. Hormonal therapies have been explored as a potential trea

The effect of the menstrual cycle on dichotic listening.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the menstrual cycle on responses to a dichotic listening task. It was hypothesized that participants would exhibit a stronger right ear advantage during the menstrual cycle days when estrogen levels are at their peak. It was also hypothesized that the women not taking oral contraceptives would exhibit greater variations in ear advantage over the course of their menstrual cycle than those taking oral contraceptives. Finally, it was hypothesized that the error response rates would remain similar across different listening conditions and ov

Novel aspects of the endocrinology of the menstrual cycle.

Ovarian control of gonadotrophin secretion is normally achieved via the feedback mechanisms mediated by oestradiol and progesterone. Evidence has been provided that nonsteroidal substances, such as inhibin A and B, participate in the negative feedback control of FSH secretion. Another nonsteroidal ovarian substance is gonadotrophin surge-attenuating factor (GnSAF), the activity of which is particularly evident in women undergoing ovulation induction. Accumulating evidence has suggested that GnSAF plays a physiological role during the menstrual cycle. In particular, this factor antagonizes the

Endorphins and the regulations of the human menstrual cycle.

In order to assess a possible influence of endogenous opioids upon gonadotrophin secretion in women, we examined the effects of i.v. administration of 10 mg naloxone, a specific opiate antagonist, in ten normal menstruating women, in thirteen women with amenorrhoea and/or hyperprolactinaemia and in two women with putative deficiency of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). In thirteen subjects, a saline vehicle control study (randomized order of administration) was also performed. In the normal women, naloxone failed to elicit changes in serum gonadotrophin levels when administered during th

Plasma proteomic signature of the human menstrual cycle.

The menstrual cycle is one of the most fundamental biological rhythms in human physiology, yet its systemic molecular changes remain poorly understood. Here we show that the menstrual cycle is accompanied by widespread changes in the circulating proteome. By profiling nearly 3,000 plasma proteins in 2,760 women from the UK Biobank, we identified 198 proteins that vary across the cycle, forming distinct temporal patterns aligned with menstrual phases. These proteins include reproductive hormones, cytokines and growth factors, many of which are enriched in endometrial tissue and expressed in epi

Why menstrual cycle irregularities belong in brain research.

The menstrual cycle requires tight orchestration between the brain and body, and irregularities can be both the cause and the consequence of wide-ranging health issues. Embracing this complexity, instead of excluding individuals with irregular menstrual patterns from research, could reveal novel brain–body interactions, advance neuroscience and improve health outcomes for those affected.

Emotion recognition and mood along the menstrual cycle.

Previous studies have demonstrated menstrual cycle dependent changes in the recognition of facial emotional expressions, specifically the expression of fear, anger, sadness or disgust. While some studies demonstrate an improvement of emotion recognition performance during the peri-ovulatory phase, when estradiol levels peak, other studies demonstrate a deterioration of emotion recognition performance during the mid-luteal phase, when progesterone levels peak. It has been hypothesized, that these changes in emotion recognition performance mirror mood changes along the menstrual cycle. In the pr

Crying, oral contraceptive use and the menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND: Crying, a complex neurobiological behavior with psychosocial and communication features, has been little studied in relationship to the menstrual cycle. METHODS: In the Mood and Daily Life study (MiDL), a community sample of Canadian women aged 18-43 years, n=76, recorded crying proneness and crying frequency daily for six months along with menstrual cycle phase information. RESULTS: Crying proneness was most likely during the premenstruum, a little less likely during menses and least likely during the mid-cycle phase, with statistically significant differences although the magni

Menstrual cycle characteristics in women with persistent schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Oestradiol has been implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Women with schizophrenia often suffer with menstrual dysfunction, usually associated with low oestradiol levels, but whether menstrual dysfunction has an effect on their psychiatric symptoms is not well researched. The aim of this study is to document the menstrual characteristics of women with chronic schizophrenia with focus upon menstrual regularity, menstrual cycle length and menstrual symptoms. To determine which patient characteristics are associated with irregular menses and whether irregular menses are asso

Chromium supplementation for menstrual cycle-related mood symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) afflicts ~7% of reproductive-age women resulting in impaired relationships, diminished overall quality of life, and disability-adjusted life years lost on par with other major psychiatric disorders. Response to pharmacological treatment is inadequate in ~50% of women with PMDD. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present study is to evaluate the effects of a novel approach-short-term chromium supplementation-on menstrual cycle-related mood and physical symptoms. METHODS: Five women were studied under single-blind conditions in a private clinical sett

Changes in plasma leptin during the menstrual cycle.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the plasma concentration of leptin, which is expressed in ovarian follicles and may have a reproductive function, in healthy women during the menstrual cycle. DESIGN: This study included nine women with regular menstrual cycles (mean+/-S.E.M. age 28+/-2 years: body mass index 23.9+/-1.8 kg/m2). From the onset of menses, fasting blood samples were collected every 1-2 days throughout the menstrual cycle. As a control, plasma leptin was measured in six postmenopausal women and six men every other day for 28 days. RESULTS: In menstruating women, plasma leptin increased from

Menstrual cycle and social behavior in vervet monkeys.

We assessed the relationship between social behavior and the menstrual cycle in 11 adult female vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) living in an established, stable social group. The findings indicated that fluctuations in ovarian steroids are accompanied by behavioral changes in vervet monkeys. A significant increase in aggressive action, avoidance of social overtures, and retreats from threat occurred during the late luteal phase. However, the social environment can greatly affect behavior independent of the phase of the menstrual cycle. The 10 nondominant (or subordinate) indivi

Effects of menstrual cycle phase on athletic performance.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of menstrual cycle phase on four selected indices of athletic performance: aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity, isokinetic strength, and high intensity endurance. Sixteen eumenorrheic women (VO2max > or = 50 ml.kg-1.min-1) were tested during the early follicular (F) and midluteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle. Cycle phases were confirmed by serum estradiol and progesterone assays. No significant differences were observed between F and L tests in weight, percent body fat, sum of skinfolds, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, maximum he

Menstrual cycle patterns and risk of breast cancer.

Menstrual cycle characteristics may reflect underlying endocrine patterns that influence the risk of breast cancer. Most previous studies of menstrual function and breast cancer risk have used retrospective reports of menstrual bleeding, which may be unreliable. To examine this association, the authors conducted a mail survey among 997 women who had recorded menstrual events prospectively over as many as 50 years, beginning in 1934. Compared with women with a median menstrual cycle length of 26-29 days, women who had cycles of extreme length at ages 25-29 years had a nearly twofold increased i
