Acute Ureteral Obstruction by Deeply Inserted Menstrual Cup.

Mechanical complications from menstrual cups are rare, with only four reported cases of ureteral obstruction. Clinicians should be aware of gynecologic devices in patients with acute abdominopelvic pain because simple removal may obviate the need for further expensive work-up or exposure to ionizing radiation.

Sensitizing fragrances in absorbent hygiene products.

BACKGROUND: Allergenic fragrances are present in a wide range of products but they are not regulated in all industries to the same extent. In Europe, absorbent hygiene products (AHPs) are only covered by the general product safety directive and therefore fragrances can be used freely, whereas in cosmetics and toys the use of these ingredients is regulated. METHOD: An analytical method was developed to evaluate the presence of 24 sensitizing fragrances in AHPs. This method allows simultaneous identification and quantification and was validated using the total error approach with an acceptance

A retained menstrual cup.

A 20-year-old woman attended a genitourinary clinic with a retained vaginal Mooncup that she had inserted the night before. A Mooncup is one type of menstrual cup. On speculum examination the device was visualized high in the vagina and the cervix appeared firmly lodged within it. The physician experienced difficulty in retrieving the cup despite following product instructions. This case highlights a new adverse event with an increasingly used sanitation product. It is important that clinicians are familiar with the cup, its removal process and are able to counsel patients with retained device

Menstrual blood loss measurement with gynaeseal.

The diagnosis of menorrhagia is usually based on the subjective complaint of heavy menstrual bleeding, although up to 50% of women describing menorrhagia have measured menstrual loss within normal limits. Treatment is usually started without first establishing an objective diagnosis, because menstrual blood loss measurement is not widely available to clinicians. Current laboratory methods of measuring menstrual loss involve extraction of menses from sanitary wear. Many women find collection of sanitary wear unacceptable and laboratory staff find the menstrual extraction procedure unpleasant an

Toxic shock syndrome: an update.

Since late 1979 to early 1980, when toxic shock syndrome achieved notoriety, a substantial body of data has demonstrated that vaginal Staphylococcus aureus infections, particularly those occurring during menstruation, account for most cases of toxic shock syndrome in women of reproductive age. Among those patients with onset during menstruation, tampon use has been identified as the most important risk factor. Although menstrually associated cases have been observed among users of all brands and styles of tampons, the use of selected "super absorbent" brands and styles has been associated with

[Vaginal ulceration induced by abuse of tampons].

A large vaginal ulcerated area which came about because super-absorbant tampons had been worn for three years is reported. Cure was obtained when the area was excised and sutured. There was no recurrence after the patient stopped using the tampons. There are 36 cases reported in the literature. Ulceration occurs in young women (25 years), nulliparous or primiparous (79%), who use tampons abnormally during the periods and between the periods (75%). The ulceration is always characteristic in appearance: it is a punched-out area, round or oval in shape, and is situated in the upper third of the v

Toxic shock syndrome: a review.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is an acute illness that affects multiple organ systems. It is a disorder of particular interest to obstetricians and gynecologists because it primarily affects otherwise healthy menstruating women who use tampons. The pathogenesis remains unknown. However, Staphylococcus aureus has been isolated from either focal lesions or the vagina in most cases and a staphylococcal exotoxin is believed to be the causative agent. The epidemiologic characteristics, risk factors, clinical findings, criteria for diagnosis, and recommendations for treatment are reviewed.

Period Poverty: How School Nurses Can Support Menstrual Health and Hygiene.

Lack of access to menstrual products, menstrual hygiene, and education, also known as period poverty, is a widespread issue and disproportionately impacts low-income, rural, Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and People of Color. Period poverty along with period symptoms, such as heavy and painful periods, contribute to school absenteeism impacting school connectedness and student success. The purpose of this article is to bring awareness to period poverty and encourage school nurses to intervene in individual schools, communities, and far-reaching policy spaces utilizing their expertise to secure res

Interpretations of Menstrual Blood Appearance and Diagnostic Potential Among Social Media Users: Cross-Sectional Mixed Methods Social Media Listening Study.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation has long been framed primarily as a hygiene issue, with mainstream products and public messaging emphasizing concealment and disposal of menstrual blood (MB). This has contributed to a culture of silence in which conversations about menstrual health have been marginalized in public and clinical settings. Recent international guidance, including the World Health Organization's call to reframe menstruation as a health issue, underscores the need for more open discourse. Simultaneously, social media has become a prominent space where menstruating individuals share experie

Menstrual wastes: a Sri Lankan perspective on quantities, characteristics, and issues.

The importance of good menstruation hygiene management (MHM) practices has gained considerable attention in Sri Lanka, but least attention is given to menstrual wastes regarding the types, quantities, characteristics, disposal practices, and potential environmental impacts due to haphazard disposal. An understanding of the types, quantities, and characteristics of menstrual wastes is crucial to formulate and implement safer collection and environmentally acceptable disposal strategies. Therefore, this paper provides a preliminary viewpoint regarding menstrual wastes generated in Sri Lanka with

Tampons as a source of exposure to metal(loid)s.

BACKGROUND: Between 52-86% of people who menstruate in the United States use tampons-cotton and/or rayon/viscose 'plugs'-to absorb menstrual blood in the vagina. Tampons may contain metals from agricultural or manufacturing processes, which could be absorbed by the vagina's highly absorptive tissue, resulting in systemic exposure. To our knowledge, no previous studies have measured metals in tampons. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the concentrations of 16 metal(loid)s in 30 tampons from 14 tampon brands and 18 product lines and compared the concentrations by tampon characteristics. METHODS: About

Using human-centered design to co-design dedicated menstrual health spaces with people who menstruate in Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, Uganda: Learnings for further adaptation and scale in humanitarian settings.

BACKGROUND: Many people who menstruate in low- and middle-income countries struggle to manage their menstruation safely, hygienically, and with dignity. This is exacerbated in humanitarian settings with limited access to menstrual products and safe, private spaces for changing, washing, and disposing of menstrual products. To address these challenges, Youth Development Labs (YLabs) used a human-centered design approach to co-design the Cocoon Mini, a safe, physical structure for managing menstruation in the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement in Uganda. METHODS: The study comprised five phases, incl

Safety assessment scheme for menstrual cups and application for the evaluation of a menstrual cup comprised of medical grade silicone.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring menstrual cup safety is paramount, yet a menstrual cup safety assessment scheme is lacking. This paper presents a quadripartite scheme, showing how it can be applied. METHODS: The Tampax Menstrual Cup was evaluated in the safety assessment scheme: (1) Biocompatibility and chemical safety of cup constituents. Extractables were obtained under different use condition; exposure-based risk assessments (EBRA) were conducted for extractables exceeding thresholds of toxicological concern. (2) Physical impact to vaginal mucosa. After physical evaluations, the Tampax Cup and anothe

Mastitis and toxic shock syndrome (tampon disease).

The present report draws attention to the toxic shock syndrome in combination with non-menstruation-associated disease. A patient with mastitis and TSS is described. The relevant literature is reviewed and discussed in relation to this patient. Physicians should be alert for TSS when a patient presents with non-understood shock and fever in the absence of positive blood cultures, even when there is no relation to menstruation or no history of previous use of tampons.

Linkages of drought and menstrual hygiene practices of adolescent girls and young women: an assessment of 707 districts in India.

BACKGROUND: Drought causes severe water scarcity, which might impede sanitation and hygiene practices. India is a drought-prone country and it is also striving to attain better sanitation and hygiene practices. This study explores drought conditions in India and its link with the menstrual hygiene practices of adolescent girls and young women. METHODS: The drought conditions were explored by computing a Satellite-Based Aridity Index (SbAI) using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), whereas, the menstrual hygiene practices (absorbent use) were analyzed using the

Systematic review of menstrual hygiene management requirements, its barriers and strategies for disabled people.

BACKGROUND: One quarter of the global population is of menstruating age, yet menstruation is shrouded in discrimination and taboos. Disability also carries stigma, so disabled people may face layers of discrimination when they are menstruating. The objective of the review is to assess the menstrual hygiene requirements of disabled people, the barriers they face, and the available interventions to help them manage their menstruation hygienically and with dignity. METHODS: Eligible studies, gathered across all countries, were identified by conducting searches across four databases (MEDLINE, Pub

The Use of "Natural" Substances for Menstrual Hygiene: A Case Report of an Embedded Vaginal Sea Sponge.

BACKGROUND: In early adolescence, irregular menstrual bleeding patterns are common and are frequently due to anovulatory cycles or bleeding disorders. As such, the diagnosis of a vaginal foreign body might initially be missed. CASE: We describe a 14-year-old adolescent female presenting with ongoing irregular menstrual spotting despite reassuring laboratory workup and ultrasonography. She was found to have an embedded vaginal sea sponge eroding through the vaginal wall. On further discussion, she reported using a natural sea sponge for menstrual blood absorption. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: In c
