Mental Health Nurses' Spiritual Well-Being, Personal Trauma History, Compassion Fatigue, and Compassion Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health nursing can be highly rewarding but at the same time overwhelmingly stressful or even traumatizing. Spirituality constitutes a central element of mental health nurses' resilience while personal trauma may be activated during exposure to beneficiaries' trauma. AIM: The aim of this study is to examine the impact of sociodemographic and work-related characteristics, spirituality, and history of trauma on compassion fatigue (CF) and compassion satisfaction among psychiatric nurses in Greece. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study with a total of 91 mental health nurs

Dynamic associations between emotion regulation, mental fatigue, and stress: An ecological momentary assessment study.

The use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies, including distraction or reappraisal, is influenced by dynamic factors such as mental fatigue and stress. Mental fatigue arises from cognitive effort, including the exertion required for effortful ER, and accumulates with repeated effort. Stress also influences ER by altering emotion intensity and goals. While ER strategies are essential for self-regulation, some may increase mental fatigue and stress, heightening the risk of emotional extremes or dysregulation that may adversely impact daily life. However, the bidirectional associations between E…

Effects of Pre-Existing Mental Conditions on Fatigue and Psychological Symptoms Post-COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Patients who are post-COVID-19 will require more treatment soon. Therefore, it is important to understand the root cause of their psychological and somatic conditions. Previous studies showed contradictory results on the influence of pre-existing mental conditions. The present study examines the influence of these pre-existing conditions and their pre-treatment on the severity of post-COVID-19 symptoms. METHODS: This analysis employs questionnaire data from a large study sample in Germany. Overall, 801 participants were included. All participants rated their health status on a sca

Mental effort and recovery from task-induced fatigue in people with traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: This exploratory case-controlled study examined whether the same amount of effort leads to similar feelings of fatigue and whether feelings of fatigue decline at the same rate in people with traumatic brain injury (pwTBI) compared to controls. METHODS: Twenty pwTBI and 20 healthy controls (HC) completed an adaptive n-back task to induce fatigue and reported mental effort upon task completion and state-fatigue pre-task and several times during 30-minutes rest-period post-task. Task difficulty adapted to performance allowing both groups to invest substantial amounts of mental effort.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Reduces the Negative Impact of Mental Fatigue on Swimming Performance.

The issue of using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to improve sport performance has recently been a topic of interest for researchers. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of tDCS over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on mental fatigue and physical performance in professional swimmers. Fifteen professional swimmers were randomly assigned in a single-blinded, randomized, counterbalanced order to sham, anodal and cathodal stimulation conditions. Mental fatigue was induced by using a 60-min modified Stroop color-word task. Subjective ratings of mental fati…

Passive and active exercise do not mitigate mental fatigue during a sustained vigilance task.

Executive function (EF) is improved following a single bout of exercise and impaired when an individual experiences mental fatigue (MF). These performance outcomes have been linked to a bi-directional change in cerebral blood flow (CBF). Here, we sought to determine whether MF-induced by a sustained vigilance task (i.e., psychomotor vigilance task: PVT) is mitigated when preceded by a single bout of exercise. Participants completed 20-min single bouts of active exercise (cycle ergometry involving volitional muscle activation), passive exercise (cycle ergometry involving a mechanical flywheel) …

Mental Fatigue and Sports Performance of Athletes: Theoretical Explanation, Influencing Factors, and Intervention Methods.

Mental fatigue is an important factor affecting athletes' performance. Explaining the effects of mental fatigue on sports performance from a theoretical point of view can help us deeply understand the interconnection between mental fatigue and sports performance and conduct effective interventions based on this. Combining the relevant literature in China and abroad reveals that the current academic theories on the mechanism of sports fatigue include motivational control theory, underload theory, neural waste disposal hypothesis, and resource depletion theory. The effects of mental fatigue on p…

Inter-hemispheric frontal alpha synchronization of event-related potentials reflects memory-induced mental fatigue.

Mental fatigue is often associated with continuous brain activities in our daily life. It can diminish efficiency and increase errors. However, the related physiological features are still not clear and under exploration. The present study investigated changes of inter-hemispheric synchronization in event-related potentials (ERPs) due to mental fatigue during sustained memory processing. Twenty-six participants performed a continuous two-back memory task for around 2.5h. Prefrontal and frontal synchronies in the alpha frequency band (8-13Hz) were analyzed because of their close relationships w…

Adaptive cognitive tasks for mental fatigue: An innovative paradigm for cognitive loading in human performance.

OBJECTIVES: Mental fatigue (MF) can impair cognitive and physical performance in sport. We tested the hypothesis that a shorter adaptive Time Load Dual Back (TLDB) task induces MF faster than a longer Stroop; and subsequently impairs cognitive and intermittent running performance. DESIGN: This study employed a randomized within-participant design. METHODS: 25 trained individuals performed a Yo-Yo test after one of four experimental conditions (30-min Stroop, 20-min and 10-min TLDB tasks, and active control). Cognitive performance was assessed using the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) before…

Physical and mental fatigue across the menstrual cycle in women with and without generalised anxiety disorder.

Subjective, disabling fatigue is a common complaint and a key feature of numerous medical conditions, and is a transdiagnostic feature of psychiatric disorders. Despite physical and mental fatigue being associated with functional impairment and reduced quality of life, little is understood about its underlying mechanisms or modulating factors. Women commonly experience exacerbation of other (non-fatigue related) psychiatric symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, and report greater fatigue prevalence compared to men. It is therefore plausible that subjective fatigue may simila…

Associations of fatigue to work-related stress, mental and physical health in an employed community sample.

BACKGROUND: While work-related fatigue has become an issue of concern among European employees, the relationship between fatigue, depression and work-related stressors is far from clear. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the associations of fatigue with work-related stressors, severe medical disease, health behavior and depression in the working population and (2) to determine the unique impact of work-related stressors on fatigue. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data of N = 7,930 working participants enrolled in the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) from 2007 to 2012 filled out th

Long-term evaluation of mental fatigue by Maastricht Questionnaire in patients with OSAS treated with CPAP.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) suffer from disrupted sleep. Impaired nightly sleep leads to increase physical and mental fatigue. The effect of long term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on mental fatigue in OSAS patients, assessed by Maastricht Questionnaire (MQ), has not been investigated yet. METHODS: In order to evaluate the role of CPAP in improving mental fatigue of patients with OSAS, we studied 35 patients (26 males, age < 65 years at the time of the diagnosis) affected by OSAS, established by polysomnography (PSG). Patients were divided i…

Current Practices for Mental Fatigue Quantification and Induction in Movement Science: Introducing the SPeCIFY Guidelines.

Mental fatigue (MF) is a complex phenomenon with significant implications for human performance, for which there are numerous studies investigating the effects of MF. Nevertheless, there is considerable variability in the approaches used to induce and quantify MF, making it hard to compare findings across studies and draw well-supported conclusions. This review addresses the methodological variability in the induction and quantification methods of MF in movement science in the following ways: on the one hand, by providing an overview of task design strategies to induce MF, emphasizing the impo…

The neural effects of positively and negatively re-experiencing mental fatigue sensation: a magnetoencephalography study.

Fatigue sensation is an essential biological alarm that urges us to take rest to avoid disrupting homeostasis and thus plays an important role in maintaining well-being. However, there are situations in which the anticipation of unpleasant fatigue sensation undesirably reduces motivation for activity. The aim of this study was to examine whether thinking positively about the fatigue sensation would increase motivation to accomplish the workload. Fourteen healthy male volunteers participated in this study and performed a two-back test for 30 min to induce mental fatigue sensation. After their s…
