Lessons from Hurricane Katrina: Psychological Recovery, Mental Health and Resilience in Children and Adolescents Post-Disaster.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to explore the psychological effects of disasters on children and adolescents following the 20 years since Hurricane Katrina. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite widespread devastation and trauma, many youths demonstrate resilience over time. Initial rates of posttraumatic stress are high, with nearly half of youth showing elevated symptoms. Rates gradually decrease over time; however, depression, anxiety and loneliness often persist long-term. Key predictors of poor mental health included additional trauma and limited resources, while resilience is suppo

Development and evaluation of a mental health recovery priority measure for cross-cultural research: global INSPIRE.

PURPOSE: This study developed and evaluated a new personal recovery scale—Global INSPIRE—in English and Japanese, and compared responses between Japan and the UK. Personal recovery—living a satisfying and meaningful life despite mental health challenges—has gained attention in mental health. The widely-used CHIME framework identifies five recovery processes: Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning, and Empowerment. Full INSPIRE evaluates whether service users feel supported in each CHIME process. However, emerging cross-cultural evidence indicates differences in the priority placed on each CHIM

Personal Recovery Among People at Risk for Developing Serious Mental Health Problems: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Personal recovery refers to a person's pursuit of a full, meaningful life despite the potentially debilitating impact of a mental illness. An evidence base describing personal recovery among people at risk for developing a mental illness is lacking, limiting the potential for mental health services to support personal recovery. To address this gap, the authors synthesized the extant research describing personal recovery among people at risk for developing a mental illness. METHODS: A systematic search of several literature databases (MEDLINE, Embase, APA PsycInfo, Web of Science Co

Development of Measures to Assess Personal Recovery in Young People Treated in Specialist Mental Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Recovery has become a central concept in mental health service delivery, and several recovery-focused measures exist for adults. The concept's applicability to young people's mental health experience has been neglected, and no measures yet exist. Aim The aim of this work is to develop measures of recovery for use in specialist child and adolescent mental health services. METHOD: On the basis of 21 semi-structured interviews, three recovery measures were devised, one for completion by the young person and two for completion by the parent/carer. Two parent/carer measures were devise

The Meaning of Agency in Contexts of Everyday Life for Mental Health Recovery in Young Adulthood - A Thematic Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: For young adults, experiences of life-disruptive mental distress often involve social isolation, stigma and reduced self-worth, which can impede recovery during a critical period of identity formation. This study explores how six young adults in Denmark, recruited through the OPUS early psychosis intervention program, retrospectively assessed how, where and why they were enabled to act within everyday contexts to catalyse recovery. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An abductive thematic analysis was conducted using life story interviews followed by intensive interviews focused on youth

Assessing the structure of mental health service networks in Belgium: implications for recovery-oriented systems of care.

BACKGROUND: Service collaboration ensures care continuity and recovery-oriented care for individuals with mental disorders (MD). A recovery-oriented system of care (ROSC) encompasses diverse person-centred services that collaborate to address individual needs and foster social integration. We examined the characteristics of care provision for individuals with MD in Belgium with regard to ROSC principles. Specifically, we analysed the structure of collaboration within existing mental health service networks, focusing on the division between mental health services and specialised services for su

'Trials and Tribulations': The Ambivalent Influence of Temporary Accommodation on Mental Health Recovery in Chronically Homeless Adults.

Relatively few studies have explicitly examined whether and how shelter-type, temporary or emergency accommodation shapes homeless clients' personal (mental health) recovery. A transatlantic phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to examine the influence of those services on personal recovery. Eighteen chronically homeless adults with a history of serious mental illness were recruited from several temporary accommodation services in New York City (NYC), U.S., and Glasgow, Scotland. Participants completed repeat in-depth interviews and a novel one-week multimedia mobile phone diary. T

Participant-reported recovery-related outcomes during routine community mental health support: a CHIME-informed longitudinal evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Recovery-oriented community mental health services seek to support personal recovery, everyday participation, and person-centered care, but these outcomes may not improve in parallel. Objective: To examine longitudinal changes in personal recovery, perceived person-centered care, occupational performance, and satisfaction with performance among adults receiving routine community support in the Spanish public social services system. The Connectedness, Hope and optimism about the future, Identity, Meaning in life, and Empowerment framework informed outcome evaluation and interpretati

Impact of receiving recorded mental health recovery narratives on quality of life in people experiencing non-psychosis mental health problems (NEON-O Trial): updated randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mental health recovery narratives are first-person lived experience accounts of recovery from mental health problems, which refer to events or actions over a period of time, and which include elements of adversity or struggle, and also self-defined or observable strengths, successes, or survival. Recorded recovery narratives are those presented in invariant form, including text, audio, or video. In a previous publication, we presented a protocol for three pragmatic trials of the Narrative Experiences Online (NEON) Intervention, a web application recommending recorded recovery narra

Recovery in personality disorders: the development and preliminary testing of a novel natural language processing model to identify recovery in mental health electronic records.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of recovery is of great importance in mental health as it emphasizes improvements in quality of life and functioning alongside the traditional focus on symptomatic remission. Yet, investigating non-symptomatic recovery in the field of personality disorders has been particularly challenging due to complexities in capturing the occurrence of recovery. Electronic health records (EHRs) provide a robust platform from which episodes of recovery can be detected. However, much of the relevant information may be embedded in free-text clinical notes, requiring the development o

Feasibility of continuous sleep and environmental monitoring in residential substance use recovery: Associations with mental health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Quality sleep is important for substance use recovery. Supporting and monitoring sleep during residential treatment poses challenges, but unobtrusive technologies like actigraphy or environmental sensors offer objective low burden measurement. We examined the feasibility and acceptability of these technologies, and associations between sleep and mental health outcomes. METHODS: This pilot and feasibility study employed a naturalistic design. Fifty-two adults in residential treatment for diverse substance-related issues wore actigraphs and completed daily sleep diaries over a per

Mental health needs of sex trafficking survivors in New York City: Reflections on exploitation, coping, and recovery.

Objective: It is increasingly acknowledged by academics, practitioners, and policymakers that sex trafficking can lead to various mental health sequelae, such as depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms, and have lasting effects on the survivors' health and well-being. What has been lacking in this dialogue, however, are the firsthand stories of survivors. This qualitative, exploratory study was designed to capture the depth and complexity of survivors' lived experiences of mental health, pathways of recovery, and social reintegration posttrafficking. Method: Six female sex trafficking survivo

Occupational Balance, Quality of Life, and Recovery Among Older Mental Health Service Users-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Occupational balance is associated with better quality of life and recovery in mental health service users; however, research focusing on such relationships among older adults within this group remains scarce. This explorative cross-sectional study examined relationships between occupational balance and quality of life and recovery in 49 older mental health service users, while also investigating how anxiety/depression and living arrangement (cohabiting vs. living alone) influenced those relationships. Self-report questionnaires were used, then analyzed statistically. Participants generally pe

Sport-related activities as a psychosocial strategy for mental health recovery following natural disasters: a narrative review.

Natural disasters-earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, wildfires, and storms-inflict profound and often enduring psychological trauma on affected populations. Survivors exhibit elevated rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, peritraumatic dissociation, social dysfunction, and somatic complaints. Despite this burden, mental health services in disaster-affected regions remain under-resourced, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This narrative review provides a conceptual synthesis of findings from 11 studies that examined the role of sport-related activities

Moving On is Hard to Do: Barriers and Facilitators to Graduation from Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery Programming.

Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery (ICMHR) Services provide interdisciplinary mental health care in the community for veterans with serious mental illness. While initially recommended as time-unlimited, studies have shown that transition from such services to a lower level of care, termed "graduation," can occur safely and with sustained improvement. This study aimed to understand the perceived barriers and facilitators to the transition process from ICMHR services to lower levels of care. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 ICMHR team members across the VA Co
