This paper addresses the questions of whether depression compromises cognition in the elderly and whether discernable patterns of cognitive performances could be differentiated between patients with severe depression and those with organic dementia. Published data on geriatric depression and cognitive functioning are divided in demonstrating a depression effect. Further examination and external validation by new data show that the depression effect on discrete cognitive tasks is (1) small, and (2) sensitive to the confounding of sampling and task variables. Future research must take these fact

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental health problems among college students, both domestically and internationally, has emerged as a significant public health concern. College students are in a period of transition to independent living. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can have advantageous effects on their overall well-being. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the impact of healthy lifestyle choices on mental health problems among college students in China.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of college students from 2021 to 2023 at a university in Wuhan (N = 1826) using th

We have prospectively followed over a 5-year period 434 volunteers who were at intake ambulatory, functional, presumably nondemented, and between 75 and 85 years of age. Fifty-six (an incidence of 3.53 per 100 person-years at risk) developed a progressive dementia: 32 met diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's disease (AD) (an incidence of 2.0 per 100 person-years at risk), 15 had vascular or mixed dementia, and 9 had other disorders or remain undiagnosed. New cases of dementia were as common as myocardial infarction and twice as common as stroke. Risk factors for both dementia and AD were age (o

Bedside cognitive screening tests have been suggested as a way to quickly determine the likelihood of a patient's having an organic mental disorder (OMD). The Mini-Mental State (MMS) examination and a number of separate bedside neurobehavioral tests were administered to 206 patients who were consecutively admitted to the University of Iowa Psychiatric Hospital. Both examinations were completed by 150 subjects. Of the sample, 7% had an OMD diagnosis. The most frequent neurological causes of OMD were probable Alzheimer's and closed head trauma. The predictive value positive, predictive value neg

BACKGROUND: Assisted living is a popular residential option for older individuals, yet little research has been done on people choosing this option. This study examines predictors of functional impairment in assisted living residents in the domains of cognition, mood, and health.
METHODS: An experienced team of neuropsychiatrists, nurses, and technicians using a number of cognitive, behavioral, health, and functional status tests and a cross-sectional study design assessed 198 residents of 22 assisted living facilities in Maryland. Data from these evaluations were used in univariate and multi

Inclusion of a mental status examination in research and clinical screening instruments lengthens the protocol, thereby adding to the difficulty of using instruments addressing all relevant issues under study without taxing participants. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of substituting a subset of items from the widely used Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) for the entire examination in order to reduce the time needed to screen for cognitive status. Study data came from a health study of 783 community-dwelling, white females, 65 years of age and over, selecte

This study assessed the role of the Mini Mental State examination (MMSE) in detecting cognitive impairment in Nigerian epileptics. The performance of 65 epileptics on the MMSE was compared with that in 65 age- and education-matched controls. There were significantly more epileptics than controls with cognitive dysfunction and the epileptics also had significantly worse scores on the MMSE. The tests of attention, three-item recall and reading were the aspects of the MMSE that were most impaired in the epileptics.

Previous research found that mixed handers (i.e., those that are more ambidextrous) were more likely than strong handers to update their beliefs (Niebauer, Aselage, & Schutte, 2002). It was assumed that this was due to greater degrees of communication between the two cerebral hemispheres in mixed handers. Niebauer and Garvey (2004) made connections between this model of updating beliefs and metacognitive processing. The current work proposes that variations in interhemispheric interaction (as measured by degree of handedness) contribute to differences in consciousness, specifically when consci

A 32 year old man with symptoms of an upper respiratory infection one week prior presented with mental status changes, diffuse hyperreflexia, and bilateral extensor plantar responses. An MRI scan showed multifocal areas of high signal intensity predominantly in the parietal and occipital white matter, unassociated with mass affect. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient's symptoms rapidly progressed and he was declared brain dead. Post-mortem examination revealed acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalopathy. The clinical and pathologic features of this disorder are reviewed.

Vascular dementia (VD) is the second most common cause of dementia in the elderly after Alzheimer's disease (AD). Prevalence estimates from community surveys indicate that, on average, 5% of persons over 65 and 15 to 20% of people over 80 suffer from "severe dementia". Clinico-pathological studies have shown that AD accounts for 50 to 60% of the cases and VD for about 10 to 20%; 20% of the patients have both disorders. The incidence rate of VD ranges from 7 per 1,000 person-years in normal volunteers to 16 per 1,000 person-years in subjects with risk factors for strokes, particularly high bloo

As part of a systematic epidemiological survey of mental disorders in two Athenian boroughs, a probability sample of 251 elderly community residents was examined by a psychiatrist. For the assessment of their mental health, symptom screening scales were used (Langner and CES-D). Cognitive functioning was also evaluated. An overall psychological functioning profile was composed from previously derived mental health levels. Clinical diagnostic examination was based on a semi-structured schedule (PEF) supplemented by DSM-III criteria. A higher proportion of females than males were characterised a

BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is used to evaluate multiple cognitive domains in elderly individuals. However, it is influenced by demographic characteristics that have yet to be adequately considered.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of age, education, and sex on the MoCA total score and to provide demographically adjusted normative values for a German-speaking population.
METHODS: Subjects were recruited from a registry of healthy volunteers. Cognitive health was defined using the Mini-Mental State Examination (score ≥27/30 points) and th

A systematic approach to assessing mental status in the emergency department is key to identifying alterations in mental status and to directing diagnostic testing and management. After initial stabilization of the patient, it is critical to assess a patient's alertness, attention, and cognition, and perform a brief psychiatric assessment to fully evaluate a patient with mental status changes. This article offers an approach to allow better management of a patient with altered mental status.

Low-dose scopolamine, given as presurgery medication, resulted in low levels of serum anticholinergic activity and caused measurable cognitive impairment in 18 psychiatrically healthy elderly patients. The degree of impairment was directly related to serum anticholinergic activity levels and, in the small subgroup of patients scheduled for spinal anesthesia, to CSF anticholinergic activity. Two of the mental status tests used, the Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test and the Saskatoon Delirium Checklist, were sensitive enough to detect these mild drug-induced changes, while two other tests, the M

At the Memory Clinic in Basel we provide long-term memory training as part of our "milieu therapy". Mildly demented elderly out-patients attend weekly group sessions of 60 min for a special semistructured memory training. The goal is to relearn and practice strategies which help to preserve or extend the phase of autonomy and thus life quality and self-esteem. In several studies we tested the efficiency of the training on mood, global mental status, short-term memory, cognitive flexibility, and quality of life by comparing the performance of groups of patients attending the memory training to

An increasing life expectancy leads to a higher number of persons aged 70-84 years and persons aged 85 years and older. Information concerning changes in the spectrum of psychiatric morbidity is rare. The Berlin Aging Study was based on a representative age- and gender-stratified sample (n = 516) of Berlin citizens aged 70-100 years and older. In this inter-disciplinary study, an intensive investigation was carried out by psychologists, sociologists, internists and psychiatrists. This report focuses on subjectively reported complaints (Beschwerdeliste, BL), observed psychopathological symptoma
