Empathy and mentalization as mediators between childhood maltreatment and social decision-making during adulthood.

Childhood maltreatment is a highly prevalent form of early adversity with long-lasting consequences for social and emotional functioning. While previous work has established links between maltreatment, empathy, and mentalization, little is known about how these processes shape adult social decision-making. In this study, 327 adults completed validated self-report measures of childhood maltreatment, empathy, and mentalization, along with a series of economic games designed to assess cooperation and punishment. We found that greater severity of childhood maltreatment was selectively associated w

Recent Innovations and Developmental Considerations in Mentalization-Based Therapy for Adolescents: A Case Illustration.

Mentalization-based therapy for adolescents (MBT-A) is a treatment modality with an evidence base for young people struggling with borderline personality disorder, depression, and self-harm. Recently, several innovations to MBT-A have been described to expand its utility to new populations. In this paper, we first describe the basic structure of MBT-A and its interventions. Second, we describe developmental considerations of working with adolescents. Third, we describe recent innovations to MBT-A which expand its utility to new populations: (1) nosological reform toward a dimensional model of

Attachment and mentalization as predictors of outcome in family therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa-focussed family therapy (FT-AN) is the first-line treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), but the predictors of poor treatment response are not well understood. The main aim of this study was to investigate the role of attachment and mentalization in predicting treatment outcome. The secondary aims of the study were to investigate therapeutic alliance at 1 month as a predictor of outcome, and to test the associations between alliance and baseline attachment and mentalization. 192 adolescents with AN and their parents were recruited as they began family therapy in out-p

Mentalization, Emotional Dysregulation, and Emotion-Related Impulsivity in Young Adults with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation and emotion-related impulsivity, particularly during late adolescence and early adulthood. Although mentalizing difficulties have been proposed as an important mechanism underlying borderline psychopathology, their contribution to emotion-related impulsivity beyond alexithymia and anxiety-depressive symptoms remains unclear. This study examined the relationships among mentalizing difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and emotion-related impulsivity in young individuals with BPD. Methods: A total of 1

Mentalization-Based Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: State-Of-The-Science and Future Directions.

INTRODUCTION: Mentalization-based therapy (MBT) is an evidence-based treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and the second most studied psychotherapeutic intervention for this disorder. Despite its growing prominence, there is a lack of focused reviews summarizing the evidence base from randomized clinical trials (RCTs). This review aims to address this gap and highlight directions for future research. METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes findings from RCTs evaluating MBT for BPD. Building on the seven studies identified in the Cochrane review by Storebø et al. (2020), we c

[Transference focused psychotherapy and mentalization based treatment. Εvidence based psychotherapies for borderline personality disorder].

Over the past decades mental health services around the world are faced with a high number of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) which has resulted in a particular emphasis on research for specialist treatments for this class of disorders. At least 5 psychotherapeutic models are based on evidence from clinical trials that support their effectiveness. In this review we present the latest research evidence as well as a summary of the basic characteristics of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy and Mentalization Based Treatment, which are not yet widely used in Greece. Brief day hospital mentalization based group psychotherapy for schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Mentalization-based therapy (MBT), a manualized psychodynamically and developmentally oriented psychotherapy, has been proven effective in controlled studies in non-psychotic patients with severe mental disorders. Although MBT is currently being used to treat schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), to date no prospective studies have evaluated outcomes and treatment-related adverse effects. Brief mentalization-based group psychotherapy (B-MBGT) is a 12-week program based on the explicit mentalizing techniques of MBT. The study was conducted at a day hospital (DH) and the main objec

Mentalization Profiles of Adolescents with Internalizing Disorders: Domain-specific Differences Compared to Typically Developing Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a sensitive period for mentalization development and also marks the onset and exacerbation of psychiatric conditions. Mentalization impairments are transdiagnostic, but the literature primarily focuses on younger children and adults in Western cultures, with limited exploration in adolescents. This study aimed to explore the differences between mentalization profiles of adolescents with internalizing disorders (AID) and typically developing adolescents (TDA) in India. METHODS: The sample included 166 adolescents (aged 12-17), divided into the AID group (n = 83) diag

Efficacy of mentalization-based therapy in treating self-harm: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and its adapted version for adolescents (MBT-A) are repeatedly highlighted as promising treatments for reducing self-harm, particularly in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Despite the availability of publications providing evidence of their efficacy in reducing self-harm, recent meta-analyses have yielded mixed results. To inform best-practice clinical decision-making, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. We aimed to disentangle findings for both adolescents and adults on the efficacy of MBT(-A) in reducing self-harm (primary

A mentalization-based approach to healing children exposed to adverse experiences: Tools for residential care.

It is well documented how adverse childhood experiences can inhibit child development and mentalizing ability and lead to high risk of developmental psychopathology. Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) has been established as an effective approach to treatment for a long range of psychopathologies with both in- and outpatient treatment, yet the evidence base for effective clinical interventions that can help guide professionals working in residential care on how to support the development of neglected and traumatized children is underdeveloped. This article demonstrates a mentalization-based a

Childhood Maltreatment History and Borderline Personality Symptoms: The Role of Mentalization Difficulties Among Vulnerable Women.

Mentalization difficulties may be one reason why individuals who experienced childhood maltreatment (CM) are at increased risk for borderline personality (BP) symptoms. The goal of this study was to identify specific aspects of mentalization associated with CM and determine their role in the short-term course of BP symptoms. A total of 253 mothers with a previous mental health diagnosis completed online surveys at three times over 9 months. A cross-lag panel model was tested to estimate reciprocal effects between mentalization measures and BP symptoms and indirect effects from CM to mentalizat

Mentalization-oriented psychodynamic group therapy for patients with personality disorders: a naturalistic prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with personality disorders (PDs) are often treated with non-manualized psychodynamic group therapy (PDT) lasting for several years. Non-manualized PDT often combines a variety of therapeutic approaches from different PDT traditions, including mentalization-based therapy. Currently, little is known about the effect of this long-term, costly treatment. This study investigated the extent to which patients with different PDs benefit from mentalization-oriented PDT as it is implemented in clinical practice in terms of symptom severity, interpersonal problems, and general functi

Research on schizotypy dates back to the 1960s, and their association with mentalization also dates back at least 15 years. However, unfortunately, the results are mainly contradictory. This review aims to clarify why the results are so different and fi nd a correlation between the tests and the results. Publications for the review were selected from PubMed by searching for the following keywords: "schizotypy + theory of mind, mentalization, empathy".
