Mentha arvensis essential oil suppressed airway changes induced by histamine and ovalbumin in experimental animals.

The present investigation aimed to evaluate the activity of the essential oil of Mentha arvensis L. on exogenously induced bronchoconstriction in experimental animals. The anti-asthmatic effect of M. arvensis essential oil (MAEO) was studied using histamine aerosol-induced bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs and ovalbumin (OVA) sensitised albino mice. Treatment with M. arvensis oil significantly (p < 0.001) increased the time of preconvulsive dyspnoea in histamine-induced guinea pigs. Oral treatment of MAEO significantly (p < 0.001) decreased absolute eosinophil count, serum level of IgE and th

Space-flown spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) seeds potentially tolerate nitro-oxidative stress from plasma-activated water.

Establishing fresh food sources during exploratory missions requires the identification of compatible plant species and accompanying technologies needed to support their growth in the space environment. Here, we investigated the use of plasma-activated water (PAW), generated via cold atmospheric pressure plasma, as a non-chemical fertilizer to aid the cultivation of Mentha spicata L. (spearmint) seeds previously flown aboard the International Space Station for 6 months. This study showed that PAW generated at a 10-min discharge (PAW10) may become inhibitory to plant development due to its comp

Nanoencapsulated Thymus daenensis and Mentha piperita essential oil for bacterial and biofilm eradication using microfluidic technology.

The use of essential oil (EO) nanoemulsions is expanding to meet customer demand for all-natural antibacterial agents. Thymus daenensis (T) and Mentha piperita (M) EOs were employed to make nanoemulsions (TEO and MEO NE), using Tween 80/Span 80 as surfactant/cosurfactant and a high-speed homogenizer. The TEO and MEO NEs were then characterized in terms of particle size (121, 113 nm), surface charge (-11.2 and -12.6 mV), morphology, and stability over time. Then, the antibacterial activity of EOs and their nanoformulations against Escherichia coli (E. coli) were evaluated based on various resid

Efficacy of a Spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) Extract as Nutritional Support in a Rat Model of Hypertensive Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is an eye-brain axis disorder characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Although the role of intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation in glaucoma has been established, the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation has emerged as a promising target for neuronal tissue-supporting glaucoma management. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of a proprietary spearmint extract (SPE) on RGC density, activity, and neuronal health markers in a rat model of hypertensive glaucoma. METHODS: Animals were divided in four groups: untreated healthy control and three glaucomatous

Menthol, a bioactive constituent of Mentha, attenuates motion sickness in mice model: Involvement of dopaminergic system.

Motion sickness (MS) occurs due to contradicting vestibular and visual inputs to the brain causing nausea and vomiting. Antidopaminergic drugs being effective in reducing MS create a path for effective therapy against MS by regulating dopamine levels. We aimed to evaluate the role of the striatum and brainstem dopamine and dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) in MS and the efficacy of menthol (MNT) to modulate dopamine and DRD2 in vitro and in vivo for possible amelioration of MS. Evaluation of efficacy of MNT to inhibit dopamine release from PC12 cells and anti-MS efficacy in BALB/c mice model was per

Chemical composition and larvicidal activity of essential oil from Mentha spicata (Linn.) against three mosquito species.

Mosquitoes are blood-feeding insects and serve as the most important vectors for spreading human diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and filariasis. The continued use of synthetic insecticides has resulted in resistance in mosquitoes. Synthetic insecticides are toxic and affect the environment by contaminating soil, water, and air, and then natural products may be an alternative to synthetic insecticides because they are effective, biodegradable, eco-friendly, and safe to environment. Botanical origin may serve as suitable alternative biocontrol techniques in the future. Ment

Colony-Level Efficacy of Mentha piperita, Thymus vulgaris and Eucalyptus globulus Essential Oil Nanoemulsions Against Varroa destructor.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are essential for ecosystem stability and agricultural production; however, one of the most destructive threats to colonies is the mite Varroa destructor. Although conventional chemical acaricides can provide short-term control, resistance development and residue concerns remain major challenges. Plant-derived essential oils have therefore attracted attention as alternative control agents. In this study, the field efficacy of nanoemulsions (NEms) prepared from peppermint (Mentha piperita; P-NEms), thyme (Thymus vulgaris; T-NEms), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globul

Bioinspired electrospun nanofibrous dressings loaded with Mentha-derived exosome-like vesicles for antibacterial and immunomodulatory burn healing.

Deep partial-thickness burns present a significant therapeutic challenge due to susceptibility to multidrug-resistant bacterial infections and persistent inflammation. Conventional grafts and dressings often fail to address the complex "inflammatory storm" microenvironment. Herein, inspired by the traditional medicinal use of Mentha for heat dissipation and dermatitis relief, we engineered a bioactive nanofibrous dressing via electrostatic self-assembly of poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) and ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PLL), loaded with Mentha-derived exosome-like vesicles (mEVs). This biomimetic mEVs@γ-

How can Mentha piperita oil affect Trichinella spiralis adults and larvae? In vitro and in vivo studies.

The alarming concerns of the current anti-trichinosis therapeutics; low efficacy against encysted larvae, serious side effects, and resistance emergence necessitate seeking an alternative therapeutic option. The well-reported therapeutic potentials of peppermint essential oil (PEO) in multiple disorders involving parasitic infections inspired us to explore its anti-trichinosis capacity. This study assessed the in-vitro impact of PEO on Trichinella spinalis adult worms and muscle larvae at three concentrations (2.5 %, 5 %, 10 %) for two durations (4, 24 h). Additionally, its in-vivo efficacy ag
