Mercury (Hg) is a toxic agent that evaporates in room temperature and its inhalation may cause poisoning. Due to the nonspecific symptoms, diagnosis is difficult in special circumstances with no initial history of Hg exposure. We report two such cases of Hg poisoning. The patients were two sisters, presenting with pain in extremities, itchy rashes, sweating, salivation, weakness, and mood changes. They have used a compound that contains mercury, for treatment of pedicullosis three months before admission. This compound was purchased from a herbal shop and was applied locally on the scalps for

INTRODUCTION: Mercury and mercury salts, including mercurous chloride and mercurous oxide, are prohibited for use in cosmetic products as skin-lightening agents because of their high toxicity. Yet, the public continue to have access to these products.
METHODS: Reports of skin-lightening cosmetic products containing mercury and cases of mercury poisoning following the use of such products were identified using Medline (1950 - 28 March 2011) with mercury, mercury compounds, mercury poisoning, cosmetics and skin absorption as the subject headings. These searches identified 118 citations of which

We describe the case of a 38-year-old woman with Guillain-Barré syndrome who was accidentally intoxicated with thimerosal, a column disinfectant containing ethyl mercury, during a protein A immunoadsorption treatment. The 1-time overdose caused by an equipment handling error led to a maximum blood serum mercury level of 2,250 microg/L, thus exceeding the normal blood reference range by a factor of approximately 200. Although the patient did not show short-or long-term clinical signs of mercury intoxication, she was treated with chelation therapy, and we replaced thimerosal with a commercially

Mercury poisoning is an underdiagnosed condition in our setting. It affects multiple organs and systems, often presenting with variable and nonspecific symptoms that may mimic more common diseases. We report the case of a 42-year-old female patient who presented with multiple arterial and venous thrombotic events, cardiovascular complications, progressive cognitive impairment, and long-standing renal dysfunction. Imaging studies revealed embolic phenomena characterized by hyperdense material suggestive of metallic emboli in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis, raising suspicion of heavy metal pois

We describe a patient with elemental mercury aspiration and retention in the appendix after elemental mercury ingestion. Conservative management was proved to be successful for the removal of the mercury from the appendix while we do not suggest bronchoalveolar lavage in cases of small amount elemental mercury aspiration.

Historians have suggested that US president Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) experienced lead and mercury poisoning following his therapeutic use of calomel (mercurous chloride) and sugar of lead (lead acetate). To evaluate these claims, we performed direct physical measurement of 2 samples of Jackson's hair (1 from 1815, 1 from 1839). Following pretreatment and acid digestion, mercury was measured using cold vapor generation techniques, while lead levels were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Mercury levels of 6.0 and 5.6 ppm were obtained from the 1815 and 1839 hair s

BACKGROUND: Mercury is a naturally occurring heavy metal that finds wide application in industrial and household settings. It exists in three chemical forms which include elemental (Hg0 ), inorganic mercurous (Hg+) or mercuric (Hg++) salts, and organic compounds. All forms are highly toxic, particularly to the nervous, gastrointestinal, and renal systems. Common circumstances of exposure include recreational substance use, suicide or homicide attempts, occupational hazards, traditional medicines, and endemic food ingestions as witnessed in the public health disasters in Minamata Bay, Japan and

This work investigated the preventive effect of diphenyl diselenide [(PhSe)2] against the toxic effects of mercury in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The animals were treated during 30 consecutive days with a (PhSe)2 supplemented feed (3.0 mg kg-1) or commercial feed. During the last 5 days the animals received a daily intraperitoneal dose of HgCl2 (1.7 mg kg-1) or Saline (0.9%). Twenty-four hours after the last HgCl2 injection, the animals were euthanized by spinal cord section to biological material obtainment. Mercury poisoning cases have been reported in many parts of the world, resulting in many deaths every year. Mercury compounds are classified in different chemical types such as elemental, inorganic and organic forms. Long term exposure to mercury compounds from different sources e.g. water, food, soil and air lead to toxic effects on cardiovascular, pulmonary, urinary, gastrointestinal, neurological systems and skin. Mercury level can be measured in plasma, urine, feces and hair samples. Urinary concentration is a good indicator of poisoning of elemental and inorganic mercury, but organic merc

Mercury intoxication is an uncommon cause of hypertension in children and can mimic several other diseases, such as pheochromocytoma and vasculitis. Mercury intoxication can present as a diagnostic challenge because levels of catecholamines may be elevated, suggesting that the etiology is a catecholamine-secreting tumor. Once acrodynia is identified as a primary symptom, a 24-hour urine mercury level can confirm the diagnosis. Inclusion of mercury intoxication in the differential diagnosis early on can help avoid unnecessary and invasive diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions. We discu

Elevated urine mercury levels in two Asian brothers with the nephrotic syndrome led to the discovery of very high mercury concentrations in 7 out of 10 other family members. Mercury contamination was caused by gold refining in a garage at the home. Although childhood nephrotic syndrome is usually idiopathic, the proteinuria and the mercury inhalation were probably causally related in this family.

BACKGROUND: Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal, and mercury poisoning often presents with different symptoms in multiple systems. While lung and kidney damage have been studied separately, involvement of the endocrine system has rarely been reported. We report on a case with pulmonary embolism, nephrotic syndrome, and hypothyroidism in a woman who used a mercury-containing whitening cream.
METHODS: Chest enhancement CT; Laboratory tests.
RESULTS: Chest enhancement CT suggested the presence of pulmonary embolism. Laboratory tests suggested nephrotic syndrome and hypothyroidism, and blood a

Mercury, a ubiquitous heavy metal, poses a significant threat to human health. Intravenous mercury poisoning is an uncommon but critical medical emergency. The nature and severity of its toxic effects depend on the form of mercury encountered: elemental, inorganic, or organic. It can affect almost all organ systems in the body. Chelating agents are the primary treatment for symptomatic mercury poisoning. This case report is about a 27-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department with an alleged history of intravenous injection of mercury as an attempt at suicide, followed by

Elemental mercury exposure occurs frequently and is potentially a toxic, particularly in children. Children are often attracted to elemental mercury because of its color, density, and tendency to form beads. Clinical manifestations of elemental mercury intoxication vary depending on its form, concentration, route of ingestion, and the duration of exposure. We present data on 179 pediatric cases of elemental mercury poisoning from exposure to mercury in schools in two different provinces of Turkey. Of all patients, 160 children had both touched/played with the mercury and inhaled its vapors, wh

Acute mercury poisoning, involving a number of organs, leads to severe dysfunctions, such as acute renal failure (ARF), and even threatens patients' lives. A case of acute severe mercuric chloride (HgCl2) poisoning with multiple organ failure was reported in this study. A 38-year-old woman orally took about 50 g HgCl2 powder in 2015, and showed nausea, emesis, clouding of consciousness, lip and nail cyanosis, and dark red bloody fluid from bilateral nostrils. Based on chest and abdominal CT examinations, gastroscopy, and colonoscopy, the patient was found to suffer oral mucosal hyperemia and u

Intravenous mercury poisoning is a rare but severe medical emergency, often resulting from accidental exposure or intentional self-harm. We present the case of a 30-year-old male with a history of sickle cell anemia who presented with high-grade fever, vomiting, giddiness, and breathlessness following intravenous mercury self-administration. Diagnostic challenges included distinguishing symptoms of acute mercury toxicity from those of his chronic condition of sickle cell trait. Markedly elevated serum mercury levels confirmed the diagnosis, with high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) imagi
