Chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI) is a serious vascular condition that if left untreated may progress to acute ischemia resulting in bowel necrosis and high surgical morbidity/mortality rates. Elective intervention has been shown to prevent this progression and relieve symptoms. Current open surgical intervention involves arterial bypass using a vein or synthetic graft conduit with the inflow originating from the aorta or iliac artery. In some circumstances, the splenic artery provides an additional treatment option for revascularization of the superior mesenteric artery. In certain cases, the

The exact prevalence of visceral arteries aneurysms is not well documented and its is mainly known from necropsies. Inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms are the rarest of visceral aneurysms. The authors report a case of an aneurysm of the inferior mesenteric artery in a 52-year-old man with obstructive disease of superior mesenteric artery and celiac axis. The diagnosis was made by angiography. The aneurysm was resected with superior and inferior mesenteric arteries revascularization. Surgical approach is needed in these aneurysms and when they are associated with obstructive disease of other

The incidence of inferior mesenteric artery aneurysms is extremely low. Once they rupture, the situation becomes extremely dangerous, and immediate intervention measures must be taken. We reported a unique case of ruptured and bleeding inferior mesenteric artery aneurysm with superior mesenteric artery stenosis. After diagnostic angiography, a super-selective transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was performed. Our patient achieved the best therapeutic outcome through the most minimally invasive surgical method. A personalized treatment strategy is recommended in the management of inferior

PURPOSE: To retrospectively investigate factors associated with mesenteric artery remodeling after conservative management of isolated mesenteric artery dissection (IMAD) (dissection of the mesenteric arteries in the absence of aortic dissection or other known causes).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 107 patients diagnosed with IMAD between February 2010 and October 2018 were identified. Eighteen patients were excluded because they underwent stent placement (n = 11) or were lost to follow-up (n = 7). A total of 89 patients who underwent conservative management were therefore included in the

Occlusion of the celiac, superior mesenteric, and inferior mesenteric artery has been studied in 46 patients treated by operation. The condition was acute and was caused by embolic obstruction of the superior mesenteric artery in four cardiac patients and detachment of the inferior mesenteric artery in two patients during removal of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms. The condition was chronic and involved two or all three of the vessels in 40 patient. Embolic obstruction caused severe abdominal pain but few physical signs early in the process,, but the picture of an acute abdomen indicatin

Aging is associated with hypertension and brain blood flow dysregulation, which are major risk factors for cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Structural remodeling, endothelial dysfunction, or hypercontractility of resistance vessels may cause increased total peripheral resistance and hypertension. Recent studies showed that G protein- and RhoA/Rho-kinase pathways are involved in increased mean arterial pressure (MAP) and arterial tone in middle-aged mice. We aimed to characterize the age-dependent changes in the vascular proteome in normal laboratory mice using mass spectrometry a

BACKGROUND: Trachelospermi caulis (T. caulis) has been used as a traditional herbal medicine in Asian countries. Although it is well known that T. caulis has beneficial effects, no sufficient research data are available on the cardiovascular effect of T. caulis. We investigated whether T. caulis extract has vascular effects in rat resistance arteries in this study.
METHODS: To examine whether T. caulis extract affects vascular reactivity, we measured isometric tension of rat mesenteric resistance arteries using a multi-wire myograph system. T. caulis extract was administered after arteries we

Perivascular sympathetic-sensory interactions have been shown to regulate calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-mediated vasodilation in rats. We investigated whether perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) modulates the neurogenic vasorelaxation of isolated rat mesenteric arteries. Mesenteric arterial rings were prepared with or without PVAT (PVAT+ or PVAT-) and with either an intact or denuded endothelium (EC+ or EC-). The results of myography analysis revealed that vasocontraction to phenylephrine was highest in EC-PVAT-, lowest in EC+PVAT+, and intermediate in EC-PVAT+ and EC+PVAT-. Transmural

Complications associated with spinal cord injury (SCI) result from unregulated reflexes below the lesion level. Understanding neurotransmission distal to the SCI could improve quality of life by mitigating complications. The long-term impact of SCI on neurovascular transmission is poorly understood, but reduced sympathetic activity below the site of SCI enhances arterial neurotransmission (1). We studied sympathetic neurovascular transmission using a rat model of long-term paraplegia (T2-3) and tetraplegia (C6-7). Sixteen weeks after SCI, T2-3 and C6-7 rats had lower blood pressure (BP) than s

KEY POINTS: The dilatory role for sensory innervation of mesenteric arteries (MAs) is impaired in Old (∼24 months) versus Young (∼4 months) mice. We investigated the nature of this impairment in isolated pressurized MAs. With perivascular sensory nerve stimulation, dilatation and inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstriction observed in Young MAs were lost in Old MAs along with impaired dilatation to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Inhibiting NO and prostaglandin synthesis increased CGRP EC50 in Young and Old MAs. Endothelial denudation attenuated dilatation to CGRP in Old MAs yet enhance

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our experience with the endovascular treatment of total occlusions of the mesenteric and celiac arteries.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of endovascular stenting of 27 nonembolic total occlusions of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and celiac artery (CA) between July 2004 and July 2011 (26 patients, 16 females; mean age, 62 ± 13 years). A variety of demographic, lesion-related and procedure-related variables were evaluated for potential impact of technical success and patency. The follow-up protocol included clinical assessment, and color and spectral

Brief, spatially localized Ca(2+) transients occur in the smooth muscle adjacent to perivascular nerves of small arteries during neurogenic contractions. We named these "junctional Ca(2+) transients" (jCaTs) and postulated that they arose from Ca(2+) entering smooth muscle cells through P2X(1) receptors activated by neurally released ATP. Nevertheless, the lack of potent, subtype-selective P2X-receptor antagonists made determining the exact molecular identity of the channels difficult. Here we used small, pressurized mesenteric arteries from P2X(1)-receptor-deficient mice (KO) to test the hypo

Vasculitis associated with malignancy is uncommon, with the most well-known association being that between hairy cell leukaemia and polyarteritis nodosa. The less common association of vasculitis and solid tumours usually involves a cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis. We report a patient with Duke's C adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon with associated necrotizing vasculitis of the mesenteric arteries and postulate that local factors may predominate in its pathogenesis.

The contractile response to exogenously applied noradrenaline (NA) was examined in vitro in tubal segments (0.2-0.1 mm in diameter) of rat middle cerebral (MCA), basilar (BA) and mesenteric (MA) arteries. In the MCA, the maximum contractile response to NA (10(-4)M) was considerably smaller than that induced by K+ (124 mM) or 5-hydroxytryptamine (10(-5)M), whereas the inverse relationship was found in the MA. NA usually failed to elicit contraction in the BA even in the presence of propranolol and cocaine. In the MCA, propranolol (3 X 10(-7)M) enhanced the maximum contractile response to NA by

A new adipocytokine, visfatin is expressed in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and exerts effects on vascular system in addition to its relationship with various pathological conditions. The present study aimed to investigate the functional effects of visfatin and the possible underlying mechanism(s) of the effects of visfatin in isolated rat mesenteric small resistance arteries. The study was conducted in small resistance arterial rings isolated from rat mesenteric vascular beds. While visfatin incubation did not produce significant alterations in contractile responses of mesenteric arteria

The endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) causes vasorelaxation in animal studies. Although circulating AEA levels are increased in many pathologies, little is known about its vascular effects in humans. The aim of this work was to characterise the effects of AEA in human arteries. Ethical approval was granted to obtain mesenteric arteries from patients (n=31) undergoing bowel resection. Wire myography was used to probe the effects and mechanisms of action of AEA. RT-PCR was used to confirm the presence of receptor mRNA in human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) and intracellular signalling proteins

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) impairs endothelium-dependent vasodilation by increasing reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing nitric oxide (NO.) bioavailability. It is unclear whether reduced expression or function of the enzyme that produces NO., endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), also contributes. It is also unclear whether resistance vessels that utilize both NO.and non-NO.vasodilatory mechanisms, undergo alteration of non-NO.mechanisms in this condition. We tested these hypotheses in male C57BL/6 mice with chronic HHcy induced by 6-wk high methionine/low-B vitamin feeding (Hcy: 89.
