The focus on taper corrosion in modular hip arthroplasty increased around 2007 as a result of clinical problems with large-head metal-on-metal (MoM) bearings on standard stems. Corrosion problems with bi-modular primary hip stems focused attention on this issue even more.Factors increasing the risk of taper corrosion were identified in laboratory and retrieval studies: stiffness of the stem neck, taper diameter and design, head diameter, offset, assembly force, head and stem material and loading. The high variability of the occurrence of corrosion in the clinical application highlights its mult

AIM: CoCrMo alloys are contraindicated for allergy sufferers. For these patients, uncemented and cemented prostheses made of titanium alloy are indicated. Knee prostheses machined from that alloy, however, may have poor tribological behaviour, especially in relation to UHMWPE inlays. Therefore, for knee replacement cemented high-strength oxide ceramic prostheses are suitable for allergy sufferers and in cases of particle-induced aseptic loosening. For adhesion of bone cement, the ceramic surface, however, only exposes inefficient mechanical retention spots as compared with a textured metal sur

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions are suspected to cause premature aseptic loosening in susceptible patients after total knee arthroplasty. In response, metal-free implants have been developed. The aim of this prospective, observational midterm study was the assessment of a completely metal-free ceramic knee replacement system as a concise follow-up of a previous report.
METHODS: Thirty-eight patients, with anamnestic suspected or documented allergy to the metal used in prosthetic alloys, participated in this 4-year follow-up of the metal-free BPK-S (Peter Brehm) total knee replacement s

Currently, titanium or specific titanium alloys are the most often used materials for the fabrication of dental implants. Many studies have confirmed the osseointegrative capacity and clinical long-term performance of moderately rough titanium implants. However, disadvantages have also been reported with regard to peri-implant infections and the titanium metal properties. Tooth colored ceramic implants have attracted the interest of clinicians since the end of the 1960s. Initially, alumina was used for the fabrication of ceramic implants; however, due to the poor biomechanical properties, alum

This study was designed to assess the interface between ceramic and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) and to detect changes in the alloys microstructure after ceramic layering. Thirty disks (n = 36) were fabricated from cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys, cast, milled, and selective laser melting (SLM) (n = 12 in each group). Half of each group (n = 5) were observed as initially fabricated. The remaining disks were ceramic veneered. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to observe the morphology and chemical-analysis of the materials. Non-veneered disks

Si3N4 ceramics with a microscale rice leaf structure (MRLS) and titanium alloy were connected via brazing, and the influence of the surface microstructure on the ceramic connection was analyzed. MRLS fabrication is an efficient and high-degree-of-freedom method that can be used to change a material's surface morphology and wettability. The MRLS was obtained at a laser power of 110 W, with line spacings of 100 and 50 μm. The laser-treated surface included nanoparticles and micro particles, exhibiting a coral-like structure after agglomeration. When the MRLS was used to braze the titanium alloy,

Fractures in esthetic ceramic veneering are one of the potential failure modes during prosthetic treatment. Depending on the type of chipping fracture, there are three possible outcomes: replacement, restoration repair, or polishing of the fractured area. Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies provide new methods to the maintenance and repair of fixed metal-ceramic restorations. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old patient who came to the dentist with comcerns about his appearance due to spontaneous gingival bleeding and a fracture in the ceramic veneering of a met

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The hatch distance, which refers to the spacing between adjacent laser lines in the laser melting process, may influence the microstructure of the metal framework and, hence, the metal-ceramic bond strength. However, studies on the influence of hatch distance on metal-ceramic bond strength are lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the porcelain bond strength of cobalt chromium frameworks fabricated using selective laser melting with hatch distances of 50 µm, 55 µm, and 60 µm.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bar-shaped cobalt chromium frameworks w

PURPOSE: Occlusal reduction is considered a fundamental step for providing adequate and uniform space for the ceramic prosthesis; however, a flat occlusal surface is usually found. The prosthesis design influences the resistance to deformation and the stress state within the ceramic. This finite element (FE) study analyzes the influence of changing the substructure design on the stress distribution of a metal-ceramic crown in a premolar tooth with three types of occlusal reduction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each part of three-dimensional metal ceramic complete crown models was designed according

A patient was treated with a maxillary gold-palladium alloy fixed partial denture (FPD). Shortly after placement, the patient contracted severe contact mucositis. Patch-testing revealed a positive reaction to palladium chloride (PdCl 2 , 1% petrolatum) but not to any other component of the prosthesis. After removal of the FPD and placement of a provisional acrylic resin restoration, all signs and symptoms disappeared. A definitive metal-ceramic (titanium-porcelain) prosthesis was placed, and no signs of lesions appeared. This clinical report demonstrates that titanium may be a satisfactory alt

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are widely applied in many high strength, light weight applications, but their thermal conductivity is lower compared to that of other metals, which limits their further applications. In this paper, we demonstrated experimentally that rGO-Ti-rGO heterogeneous substrates with higher thermal conductivity, up to ∼38.8% higher than Ti, could be fabricated by electrochemical depositing rGO on their surface. The rGO layers are grown on the surface of Ti substrates, with appearance of bedclothes on the beds. The thickness of rGO layers is around 300-500 nm and around 600-

Prosthodontic biomaterials include impression materials, luting cements, and restorative materials. They consist of metals and alloys ceramics, and polymer materials and are retained in patients for <60 min or for decades. Oral release of compounds from biomaterials occurs, and adverse reactions may follow dental treatment. Especially in allergically vulnerable patients contact allergy may occur. There are reports from many different countries on contact allergy from gold/palladium alloys, components from polymer-based materials, chromium/cobalt alloys, and nickel. Notifications on adverse rea

We describe three prostheses with cemented titanium-alloy stems and Al2O3 ceramic femoral heads which had to be revised after a mean period of implantation of 78 months. In each case, the neck of the prosthesis had been so severely worn that the profile was elliptical rather than circular. There was severe metallosis of the periprosthetic tissues. Metal particles isolated from the tissues were approximately one nanometre in size and the ratios of titanium, aluminium and vanadium in the particles were the same as in the original alloy. Histologically, the high concentration of metal particles m

Although ceramic prostheses have been successfully used in conventional total hip arthroplasty (THA) for many decades, ceramic materials have not yet been applied for hip resurfacing (HR) surgeries. The objective of this study is to investigate the mechanical reliability of silicon nitride as a new ceramic material in HR prostheses. A finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to study the effects of two different designs of prostheses on the stress distribution in the femur-neck area. A metallic (cobalt-chromium-alloy) Birmingham hip resurfacing (BHR) prosthesis and our newly designed cerami
