Facile room-temperature synthesis of layered transition metal phosphonates via hitherto unknown alkali metal tert-butyl phosphonates.

A facile room-temperature synthetic method is presented to produce alkali metal salts of tert-butyl phosphonic acid. The reaction between equimolar amounts of alkali metal carbonates and tert-butyl phosphonic acid in methanol results in the formation of [(tBuPO3H)Li(H2O)3·(H2O)] (1), [(tBuPO3)Na2(H2O)4]n (2), and [(tBuPO3H)K(H2O)]n (3). Solid-state structures of these compounds have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and further validated using numerous spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Compounds 1-3 are polymeric solids that are predominantly made up of a 1-D po

Synthesis and Reactivity of Alkali Metal Hydrido-Magnesiate Complexes which Exhibit Group 1 Metal Counter-Cation Specific Stability.

Reactions of the series of alkali metal amides M(HMDS) (M = Li-Cs; HMDS = [N(SiMe3)2]-) with the neutral magnesium(II) hydride compound [Mg(BDIDipp)(μ-H)]2 (BDIDipp = [CH{C(Me)NDipp}2], Dipp = 2,6-iPr2-C6H3) have been carried out. When M = Li or Na, the reactions yielded Mg(BDIDipp)(HMDS) and MH as the primary products. In the sodium amide reaction, [Na2(HMDS)][{Mg(BDIDipp)}2(H)3] was obtained as a low-yield by-product. When M = K-Cs, the reactions gave the group 1 metal hydrido-magnesiates, M2[Mg(BDIDipp)(HMDS)(H)]2·(benzene)n (n = 0 or 1), the thermal stability of which increases with the in

Lead-free new alkali metals double perovskites A2InAgF6 (A = Na, K, and Rb) for optoelectronic applications: a first-principles study.

The growing demand for sustainable energy and the environmental drawbacks of lead-based perovskites have led to the emergence of lead-free double perovskites as promising alternatives. In this work, first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) are employed to systematically investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical, and thermodynamic properties of fluoride-based double perovskites A2InAgF6 (A = Na, K, and Rb). Structural analysis confirms that all three compounds are stable in the cubic space group, with negative formation energies. Mechanical evalua

C[double bond, length as m-dash]O methylenation mediated by organo-alkali metal reagents: metal identity and ligand effects.

C[double bond, length as m-dash]O methylenation mediated by α-silyl organo-alkali metal reagents, namely Peterson methylenation, is a textbook organic reaction that has been widely employed in synthetic chemistry for over 50 years. The process is performed over two steps, by isolating the β-silyl alcohol intermediate generated via nucleophilic addition and then subjecting it to elimination. The choices of alkali metal and external Lewis base ligand play a critical role in the elimination step, but the reasons remain poorly understood. In this work, we have systematically investigated the metal

Ligand- and alkali metal identity-effects in ligand-induced ortho-selective C(sp2)-H metalation of neophyl-sodium and lithium complexes.

Organosodium complexes are emerging as sustainable alternatives to ubiquitous organolithium reagents. Despite a recent surge of research efforts in organosodium chemistry, the metal identity (Na vs. Li) and ligand effects require more clear-cut, comparative studies to enable the reactivity of these reagents to be tuned. Herein, we report a direct comparison of neophyl-sodium and lithium (NphNa/Li; Nph = C6H5C(Me)2CH2) in the context of a challenging transformation: regioselective ortho-C(sp2)-H metalation. For NphNa, a pronounced ligand effect was observed in ligand-induced C(sp2)-H metalation

Well-Defined Molecular Alkali Metal Catalysts for Mild and Selective Reduction of Carboxylic Acids by Hydrosilylation.

The selective transformation of carboxylic acids into alcohols remains a challenge, although many catalytic methods have been developed recently. Hydrosilylative reduction appeared to be an attractive strategy in the presence of a metallic catalyst. In those processes, transition metals were usually employed for the catalyst design, and the reactions often suffered from poor selectivity, limited functional group tolerance, and the requirement of elevated temperature. Here, we report inexpensive and easy-to-make alkali metal catalysts that effectively promote the hydrosilylation of carboxylic a

Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metal Hydrides Driven Thermochemical Reduction of CO2 to CH3OH at Ambient Pressure.

The reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol (CH3OH), is presently constrained by energy-intensive processes requiring high temperatures and pressures to overcome kinetic and thermodynamic limitations. This work unveils for the first time a reaction pathway for alkali and alkaline earth metal hydrides (LiH, NaH, KH, MgH2, CaH2, and BaH2), enabling the activation and selective reduction of CO2 to methanol under ambient pressure. This finding represents a significant departure from the established paradigm, which exclusively produced methane at moderate pressures (0.1-1 MPa). Temperature-pr

Alkali-Metal Tuning of Chain Topology and Magnetic Order in V3+-Based Lead Vanadium Fluorides.

Two new V3+-based alkali metal lead fluorides, Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 and K3.8Pb2.2V4F20, were synthesized via hydrothermal methods derived from the parent compound Pb7V4F26. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̅, featuring linear V-F-V chains within its structure, whereas K3.8Pb2.2V4F20 adopts the tetragonal space group P42/nmc and features a wavy zigzag chain structure. Magnetic and heat capacity measurements show that Na3.6Pb6.4V4F28 undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at 19.7 K, whereas K3.8Pb2.2V4F20 develops short

Multifunctional Additives With Dual Anions and Alkali Metal Cation for Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes.

Quasi-2D perovskites have exhibited significant potential in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) because of their advantages of high color purity and high photoluminescent quantum yield. Currently, the performance of green PeLEDs is primarily limited by low-n phases and defects in perovskite films, which result in low carrier mobility and non-radiative recombination. Herein, we propose a tri-functional additive strategy to obtain high-quality perovskite films by incorporating biocompatible salicylates (sodium salicylate (NaSA) and potassium salicylate (KSA)) into quasi-2D perovskite. Atomization Energy Calculations in 13-Atom Alkali Metal Clusters: Is There an Appropriate Exchange-Correlation Functional?

Density functional theory (DFT) is a treatment widely employed for exploring the electronic structure of atoms, molecules, solids, and complex systems. Despite its efficiency and popularity, the accuracy of DFT results is highly dependent on the choice of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals. This study evaluates several XC functionals for calculating atomization energies in 13-atom homo- and heteronuclear alkali metal clusters (X13 and YX12, with X, Y = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs), comparing these results with reference data obtained from fixed-node Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations. Progress and perspectives on iron-based electrode materials for alkali metal-ion batteries: a critical review.

Iron-based materials with significant physicochemical properties, including high theoretical capacity, low cost and mechanical and thermal stability, have attracted research attention as electrode materials for alkali metal-ion batteries (AMIBs). However, practical implementation of some iron-based materials is impeded by their poor conductivity, large volume change, and irreversible phase transition during electrochemical reactions. In this review we critically assess advances in the chemical synthesis and structural design, together with modification strategies, of iron-based compounds for A

Synthesis of rare-earth metal compounds through enhanced reactivity of alkali halides at high pressures.

Chemical stability of the alkali halides NaCl and KCl has allowed for their use as inert media in high-pressure high-temperature experiments. Here we demonstrate the unexpected reactivity of the halides with metals (Y, Dy, and Re) and iron oxide (FeO) in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, thus providing a synthetic route for halogen-containing binary and ternary compounds. So far unknown chlorides, Y2Cl and DyCl, and chloride carbides, Y2ClC and Dy2ClC, were synthesized at ~40 GPa and 2000 K and their structures were solved and refined using in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction

Theoretical evaluation on selective adsorption characteristics of alkali metal-based sorbents for gaseous oxidized mercury.

Alkali metal-based sorbents are potential for oxidized mercury (Hg2+) selective adsorption but show hardly effect to elemental mercury (Hg0) in flue gas. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to investigate the Hg0 and HgCl2 adsorption mechanism over alkali metal-based sorbents, including calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO), potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl). Hg0 was found to weakly interact with CaO (001), MgO (001), KCl (001) and NaCl (001) surfaces while HgCl2 was effectively adsorbed on top-O and top-Cl sites. Charge transfer and bond population were calcula

Molecular dynamics evidence for alkali-metal rattling in the β-pyrochlores, AOs2O6 (A = K, Rb, Cs).

We have used ab initio molecular dynamics simulations validated against inelastic neutron scattering data to study alkali-metal dynamics in the β-pyrochlore osmates AOs2O6 (A=K, Rb, Cs) at 300 K to gain insight into the microscopic nature of rattling dynamics in these materials. Our results provide new evidence at the microscopic level for rattling dynamics: (1) the elemental magnitude spectra calculated from the MD show a striking dominance by the alkali metals at low energies indicating weak coupling to the cage, (2) the atomic root-mean-square displacements for the alkali metals are signifi

Alkali and alkaline-earth metal ketyl complexes: isolation, structural diversity, and hydrogenation/protonation reactions.

The use of hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) as a stabilizing ligand allowed successful isolation of a series of structurally characterizable alkali metal and calcium ketyl complexes. Reaction of lithium and sodium with one equivalent of fluorenone and reaction of sodium with one equivalent of benzophenone in THF, followed by addition of two equivalents of HMPA, yielded the corresponding ketyl complexes 1, 2, and 11, respectively, as microketyl-bridged dimers. If one equivalent of HMPA was used in the reaction of sodium with fluorenone, a further aggregated complex, the mu3-ketyl-bridged te

A Comprehensive Study on the Full Series of Alkali-Metal Selenocyanates AI [SeCN] (AI =Li-Cs).

The full series of quasibinary alkali-metal selenocyanates was synthesized either by oxidation of the respective cyanides (A=Li-Rb) or by metathesis (A=Cs). For Li[SeCN] only ball-milling and subsequent annealing led to the isolation of the quasibinary selenocyanate. Their structures were refined from single-crystal and powder X-ray data. The respective solid-state IR and Raman spectra were interpreted with the aid of solid-state quantum-mechanical calculations and DSC-TGA measurements allowed for extraction of melting points. Only for Li[SeCN] a possible phase transition was observed that is

Fluconazole affects the alkali-metal-cation homeostasis and susceptibility to cationic toxic compounds of Candida glabrata.

Candida glabrata is a salt-tolerant and fluconazole (FLC)-resistant yeast species. Here, we analyse the contribution of plasma-membrane alkali-metal-cation exporters, a cation/proton antiporter and a cation ATPase to cation homeostasis and the maintenance of membrane potential (ΔΨ). Using a series of single and double mutants lacking CNH1 and/or ENA1 genes we show that the inability to export potassium and toxic alkali-metal cations leads to a slight hyperpolarization of the plasma membrane of C. glabrata cells; this hyperpolarization drives more cations into the cells and affects cation homeo

Stimulation of amylase secretion from the perfused cat pancreas by potassium and other alkali metal ions.

1. In the isolated cat pancreas, stimulated maximally with secretin, increasing the perfusate potassium concentration (at the expense of sodium ions) caused a copious secretion of amylase from the gland, reduced the volume rate of secretion and caused vasoconstriction.2. Rubidium and caesium had similar effects to potassium: lithium, though depressing secretory rate, had no effect on enzyme secretion or vasoconstrictor action.3. Amylase secretion was detected at potassium concentrations of 30 mM and was maximal at 80-90 mM, output declining as the concentration was raised to 120 mM.4. Amylase
