White-emitting Protein-Metal Nanocluster Phosphors for Highly Performing Biohybrid Light-Emitting Diodes.

This work presents a simple in situ synthesis and stabilization of fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with different sizes using engineered protein scaffolds in water. The protein-AuNC hybrids show a dual emission (450 and 700 nm) with a record photoluminescence quantum yield of 20%. These features impelled us to apply them to biohybrid light-emitting diodes as color down-converting filters or biophosphors. Efficient white emission (x/y CIE color coordinates of 0.31/0.29) and stabilities of more than 800 h were achieved. This represents a 2 orders of magnitude enhancement compared to the pr

A novel step-wise indirect bioleaching using biogenic ferric agent for enhancement recovery of valuable metals from waste light emitting diode (WLED).

Waste light-emitting diodes (WLED) are of major interest as they are a considered secondary source of valuable metals with a high potential for polluting the environment. To recover the valuable metals from WLEDs, various methods have been applied such as direct and indirect bioleaching. A novel step-wise indirect bioleaching process has been developed in this study for recycling valuable metals from WLEDs using adapted Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The ferric ion concentration was controlled at 4-5 g/L with step-wise addition of biogenic ferric for faster bioleaching rate. The results indic

Layered Spin-Crossover Metal-Organic Frameworks for Light-Induced Control of Two-Dimensional Quantum Materials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely explored for gas separation, catalysis, or energy storage, yet their integration with other electronically functional materials remains largely unexplored. Here, we integrate the layered Hofmann-type spin-crossover (SCO) MOF {FeII(pyS2Et)2[PtII(CN)4]} into electrical nanodevices to control the properties of two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials. Our molecular approach exploits the stimuli-responsive nature of SCO-layered materials as switchable building blocks. We demonstrate selective modulation of the electronic transport in van der Waals heterostr

Electron Donor Regulation in A-D-A Type Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhancing Visible-Light Driven Photocatalysis.

Charge separation efficiency is the determinant factor for reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in photocatalytic aerobic oxidation reaction. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provided a formidable platform for designing a donor-acceptor (D-A) system with tunable photoexcited carrier dynamics. Herein, we reported a series of UiO-68 type MOFs (termed as UiO-68-A-D1-A, UiO-68-A-D2-A, and UiO-68-A-D3-A) based on linearly bridged bis-benzothiadiazole as A-D-A linkers. Experimental and density functional theory calculations revealed that regulating the donor units from benzene to naphthalene and an

Visible light activation Ti-based metal organic framework nanoenzyme for colorimetric analysis of dopamine in serum.

Dopamine (DA), a key catecholamine neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, is closely associated with abnormal levels in various diseases such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. Developing a simple and sensitive method for DA detection is of significant clinical importance. This work constructed a visible light-driven colorimetric sensing platform using titanium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ti-MOF) nanozymes for the highly selective detection of DA in serum. Ti-MOF nanozymes were successfully prepared via a solvothermal method, and their peroxidase-like catalytic activity und

Visible light-mediated synthesis of metal-free molecularly imprinted polymers for highly selective creatinine detection.

Early and reliable monitoring of creatinine is essential for the timely diagnosis of chronic kidney disease; however, many existing electrochemical sensors are limited by enzyme instability, high fabrication cost, and concerns associated with metal-containing catalytic systems. Here, we report the fabrication of a hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based surface-imprinted macromolecular network through visible-light-mediated organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) using a grafting-from strategy, yielding a fully metal-free molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for selective crea

Chiral metal cluster-mediated chirality transfer in light-harvesting nanoribbons for amplified circularly polarized luminescence.

The construction of artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) with continuous chirality transfer is of great significance to deeply comprehend the hierarchical evolution in nature. Herein, the achiral C3-symmetric benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) molecule functions as donor of LHSs motifs, where subnanometer-scale metal clusters (R/S-Ag6) are introduced as "Sergeants" to generate predominant handedness nanoribbons through chirality transfer. Importantly, these helical nanoribbons act as chirality and energy donors for the energy level-matching Ag6-cluster acceptors, enabling the fabrication

Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Production under Visible-Light Irradiation.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are important photocatalytic materials for H2 production. To clarify the structure-function relationship and improve the photocatalytic activity, herein we explored a series of porphyrin-based zirconium MOFs (PCN-H2/Ptx:y, where x:y = 4:1, 3:2, 2:3, and 0:1) containing different ratios of H2TCPP and PtIITCPP [TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrinate] as isostructural ligands and Zr6 clusters as nodes. Under visible-light irradiation, PCN-H2/Pt0:1 shows the highest average H2 evolution reaction rate (351.08 μmol h-1 g-1), which decreases along with lowering o

Helical Photonic Confinement of Metal Clusters Enables Switching and Imaging of Near-Infrared Circularly Polarized Light.

Near-infrared (NIR) circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials are highly desirable for optical communication, bioimaging, night-vision applications, and chiral encrypted information transfer, yet their practical use is limited by extremely low luminescence asymmetry factors (glum). Here, we establish a helical photonic confinement strategy by embedding NIR-emissive Au13 nanoclusters into chiral nematic mesoporous silica (CNMS). Precise matching between the chiral photonic bandgap and cluster emission yields strongly enhanced NIR-CPL with a glum of -0.4, enabling direct discrimination of

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Programable Platforms for Micro- and Optoelectronics: From Dielectrics to Semiconductors and White-Light Emitters.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as highly tunable materials for microelectronic and optoelectronic applications due to their modular structures and chemically programable properties. Here we summarize recent advances in MOFs as functional electronic materials, including their use as low- and high-dielectric-constant insulators, semiconductors with enhanced charge transport, and intrinsic broadband white-light emitters. Key strategies for bandgap and property modulation, such as metal-node selection, π-conjugated linker design, guest incorporation, and the role of coordinated or co

Flexible light-emitting diodes with EQE approaching 26.4% from horizontal dipole-oriented metal nanoclusters.

Metal nanoclusters, as unique metallic molecules comprising a few to hundreds of metal atoms and stabilized by organic monolayer ligands, have recently emerged as a novel class of chromophores and hold great promise for flexible light-emitting diodes. However, the fabrication of flexible metal nanoclusters-based light-emitting diodes is still hindered by low photoluminescence quantum yields, suboptimal solution processability, and consequently compromised emitter-film quality with random dipole orientations. This work addresses these limitations through strategic molecular engineering by emplo

Light-Programmed Localized Supersaturation Enables Ambient Aqueous Synthesis of Highly Crystalline Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Crystalline materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are essential for applications in catalysis, gas storage, and energy conversion, but conventional crystallization methods typically require high precursor concentrations or elevated temperatures, such as those provided by hydrothermal or solvothermal approaches. In this study, a self-assembled nanoreactor was developed to achieve localized supersaturation via the photooxidation of Cu2O nanoparticles under visible light irradiation. Unlike conventional methods, this strategy enables HKUST-1 crystallization at ambient temperatu

NIR light-driven transformable liquid metal-based nanovaccines restrain postoperative colorectal cancer recurrence.

Cancer vaccines mount specific immune memory responses and hold great potential in suppressing postoperative colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence. However, undesired lymph node trafficking and antigen cross-presentation hamper clinical translation of nanovaccines. Here, we propose a controllable transformable nanovaccine grounded on thermal fusion feature of liquid metal (LM) nanoparticles against postoperative CRC recurrence. After draining to lymph nodes, LM-based nanovaccines (LMVs) aggregate and transform from spheres to fusiform sharp under NIR irradiation, conducive to cytoplasmic delivery

Pressure-Driven Energy Transfer for Enhanced Red-Light Emission in Europium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Europium-based metal-organic frameworks offer a unique platform for photoluminescent materials due to the tunable ligand structures and the inherent properties of lanthanides. However, their practical applications are limited by low luminescence efficiency due to inefficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer (LMET). Herein, we introduce a pressure-induced hydrogen bond enhancement strategy to promote the LMET process, triggering the bright red light behavior in the initially weakly emitting Eu(BTC)(H2O)6 (H3BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid). As the pressure approaches 9.2 GPa, the photolumi

UV light irradiation improves the aggregation and settling performance of metal sulfide particles in strongly acidic wastewater.

Tiny metal sulfide particles are usually generated in the metal sulfide precipitation process, and residual dissolved sulfide (H2S, HS- and S2-) generally makes the aggregation and settling performance of these particles worse. In this work, under strongly acidic conditions with 0.102 M H2SO4, the characteristics of CuS, CdS and mixed metal sulfide particles (CuS and CdS) produced in strongly acidic wastewater by H2S were initially studied. Then, UV light irradiation was employed to improve the aggregation and settling performance of the metal sulfide particles, and relevant mechanisms were in

Highly enhanced photoreductive degradation of perchlorinated compounds on dye-sensitized metal/TiO2 under visible light.

This study reports an example of visible-light photocatalyst based on TiO2 modified by ruthenium-complex sensitizers and noble metal deposits. The photodegradation of trichloroacetate (TCA) and carbon tetrachloride was used as a probe reaction for evaluating the visible light activity of the photocatalyst under the illumination of lambda > 420 nm. Photodeposition of platinum nanoparticles on dye-sensitized TiO2 (Pt/TiO2/Ru(II)L3) drastically enhanced the degradation rate of TCA and CCl4. The visible light reactivity of Pt/TiO2/Ru(II)L3 was optimal with [Ru(II)L3] = 10 microM, [TiO2] = 0.5 g/L,
