Tubercular osteomyelitis of the first metatarsal bone as a cause of forefoot pain.

The reporting of isolated metatarsal tuberculosis in the available literature is sparse, herein we report a case of 26-year-old female who presented with insidious onset pain and swelling in her forefoot. Radiograph showed osteolysis of the first metatarsal. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osseous erosion with marrow oedema. Diagnosis was ascertained by fine needle aspiration cytology of the lesion. The patient received anti-tubercular therapy and showed good clinical outcome. This case is reported because of its rarity of involving isolated metatarsal bone as a cause of forefoot pain.

[Chondroblastoma of the metatarsal bone and its 17-year follow-up].

Chondroblastoma is a rare bone tumor of cartilaginous origin. Metatarsal involvement is very rare, with a few cases. We presented a case of chondroblastoma localized in the fourth metatarsal bone. The patient presented with persistent pain of eight-month duration on the lateral side of his foot, which developed after an inversion ankle sprain. Radiological examination showed a large osteolytic lesion with sclerotic margins in the fourth metatarsal bone. The lesion was treated with extra-articular curettage and autogenous bone grafting. During a 17-year follow-up, the patient had no complaints,

Epoxy putty external skeletal fixation for fractures of the four main metacarpal and metatarsal bones in cats and dogs.

The objective of this retrospective study was to report the clinical use, advantages, disadvantages, complications and outcome of an epoxy putty external skeletal fixator (EPESF) used for the repair of fractures of all four main metatarsal or metacarpal bones in a single limb in 11 dogs and 11 cats. The aim of this technique was to achieve satisfactory alignment of the proximal and distal joints and the digits, rather than anatomical reconstruction of the metacarpal/metatarsal bones themselves. All of the cases achieved fracture union and they all recovered fully without any residual lameness.

A rare case of complete proximal epiphyses (so-called pseudoepiphyses) of the metacarpal and metatarsal bones in the human.

We report a rare case of complete proximal epiphyses (so-called pseudoepiphyses) of metacarpal and metatarsal bones in a human. These phenomena were seen in both the hands and feet of a seven-year-old girl undergoing medical examination for pain in the right foot. During medical treatment, X-ray photographs of the hands and feet were taken. Each metacarpal and metatarsal bone except for the first metacarpal bones had supernumerary epiphyses (complete pseudoepiphyses) at the nonepiphyseal end of these bones. This is a rare case even for an experienced orthopaedic surgeon.

Relationship between CT-Derived Bone Mineral Density and UTE-MR-Derived Porosity Index in Equine Third Metacarpal and Metatarsal Bones.

Fatigue-related subchondral bone injuries of the third metacarpal/metatarsal (McIII/MtIII) bones are common causes of wastage, and they are welfare concerns in racehorses. A better understanding of bone health and strength would improve animal welfare and be of benefit for the racing industry. The porosity index (PI) is an indirect measure of osseous pore size and number in bones, and it is therefore an interesting indicator of bone strength. MRI of compact bone using traditional methods, even with short echo times, fail to generate enough signal to assess bone architecture as water protons ar

Radiographic Bone Healing in Minimally Invasive Floating Metatarsal Osteotomy for Neuropathic Plantar Metatarsal Head Ulcers - A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Minimally invasive floating metatarsal osteotomy is an option for treating neuropathic ulcers under the metatarsal heads. This study presents the radiographic results of the floating metatarsal osteotomy. We reviewed files and radiographs at least 4 months after a floating metatarsal osteotomy in patients with diabetic neuropathy. In 71 osteotomies in 54 patients with late onset diabetes (mean age 61 ± 9, mean HbA1c 7.9 ± 1.9%), the primary ulcer healed within 3.5 ± 1.4 weeks. Of 66 osteotomies where radiographs were available 10 had non-union (15%, all asymptomatic), 15 (23%) had hypertrophic

Arthroscopic Sesamoidectomy and Plantar Metatarsal Head Bone Shaving in Management of First Metatarsal Head Metatarsalgia After First Metatarsophalangeal Fusion.

First metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis has been used to treat end-stage arthritis of the great toe (e.g., gout, post-traumatic, infection), severe hallux valgus deformity, hallux valgus caused by neuromuscular disorders, rheumatoid forefoot deformity, primary hallux varus, and rigid plantarflexion deformities, as well as a salvage procedure for failed previous operation of the great toe. As with any arthrodesis procedure, proper positioning of the hallux in first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis is of utmost importance for good clinical outcome. The chief problem tends to be sagittal alignment.

The effect of hallux valgus on the anatomy of the nerves around the first metatarsal bone.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the variations in the location of the nerves that may be at risk in hallux valgus (HV) surgery, and to reveal whether these nerves are affected by the anatomical changes associated with HV. METHOD: In the formalin fixed, 46 lower extremities (19 female, 27 male) (9 normal, 14 mild HV, 21 moderate/severe HV), extensor hallucis longus tendon (EHL), deep plantar artery, medial dorsal cutaneous (MDCN), deep fibular (DFN), common plantar digital (CPDN) and proper plantar digital (PPDN) nerves were examined. The branches of MDCN extending to the medial side of foot were recor

Diagnosis of a Stress Fracture Of a Metatarsal Bone with Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS).

The early diagnosis of stress fractures is a challenge in daily primary care practice. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) can be helpful in the diagnosis of early signs of an incipient stress fracture. A 52-year-old woman presented with a history of chronic overuse in the left forefoot. A sonographic examination in the area of the reported pain point on the third metatarsal (consistent with a marching fracture) showed a clear accumulation of fluid, corresponding to subperiosteal hematoma. After only two weeks of resting the forefoot, a repeat examination using POCUS showed clear callus formation

Does Hallux Valgus Exhibit a Deformity Inherent to the First Metatarsal Bone?

Hallux valgus is a common condition, and it still poses some challenges. The identification of factors associated with the development of the deformity is of paramount importance in obtaining a full correction of the disorder. Hallux pronation is one of the frequently found components, especially in larger deformities, but the cause and exact location of this condition are not fully understood. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether there is a rotational deformity inherent to the first metatarsal bone. A case-control study was conducted on patients with and without hallux valg

The syndrome of proximal femur, fibula, and midline metatarsal long bone deficiencies.

Human lower limb congenital long bone deficiencies cluster primarily at three distinct skeletal locations. Proximal femoral and fibular reductions are known phenomena. In contrast, midline metatarsal deficiencies have been misrepresented as lateral. The popular term, "fibular hemimelia," is inaccurate and its use is discouraged. All three locations correspond to discrete sites of evolving angiogenesis during transition from a single embryonic axial limb artery to the familiar and complex adult arterial pattern. Initiation of bone formation of cartilaginous primordia of the long bones at all th

The peroneus brevis tendon at its insertion site on fifth metatarsal bone.

BACKGROUND: The differences at the attachment site of peroneus brevis (PB) to the fifth metatarsal bone is important in terms of the forces exerted on the bone and hence the mechanism of fractures involving this structure. In this study, we investigated the anatomical properties of PB at the insertion site to the base of fifth metatarsal bone, its possible intertendinous connections with peroneus tertius (PT) and their possible effects on the fracture occurrence at the bony attachment site. METHODS: The length and the width of PB tendons at their mid- and end-points were measured and classifi

[The results of treatment of hallux valgus with subcapital osteotomy of the first metatarsal bone].

This paper presents results of wedge subcapital osteotomy of the first metatarsal bone with lateral and plantar translation of the distal fragment in 47 feet (44 women age 37-72) operated for hallux valgus deformity. Bone fragments were stabilized with Kirschner wire introduced obliquely from lateral side of the head to the shaft. Protruding out of the skin part of the wire between I and II toe was shaped parallel to the lateral side of hallux preventing from valgisation. The mean AOFAS score improved from the preoperative value of 49 points to 86 points postoperatively. Hallux valgus angle im
