Visceral leishmaniasis in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, India from 1990 to 2008.

BACKGROUND: Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease transmitted by Phlebotomus argentipes. To understand the VL seasonality, annual and monthly variations of VL incidence and its relationship to meteorological variables, the numbers of VL cases reported in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, India from 1990 to 2008 were studied. METHODS: Annual VL incidence per 10,000 and the total number of annual VL cases reported at block Community Health Centres (CHC), Public Hospitals or Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) and the number of VL cases per month from 2000 to 2008 as well as the mont

Ecology of sandflies (Diptera:Psychodidae) in a restricted focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in northern Venezuela. III. Seasonal fluctuation.

A one year-long study (March 1979-March 1980) was carried out at San Esteban, an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northern Venezuela, with the aim of observing the seasonal fluctuation of the local phlebotomine sandflies species. The influence of climatic factors (temperature, relative humidity and rainfall) on population dynamics was analyzed in three collecting sites--a house, a peridomestic area and a sylvatic region. Among anthropophilic species, L. panamensis behaved as a wetseason species, the mean minimum relative humidity being the critical factor influencing the total numbe

[Dynamics of typhoid-paratyphoid infection morbidity in Chimkent Province].

The study of the time course of typhoid-paratyphoid infections in the Chimkent region for the period of 1944-1979 has revealed the periodicity of their rises (falls) repeating every 2-4 years. Since 1964 the tendency towards the decrease of morbidity has been observed. The annual rate of this decrease is 4.9%. Periodic changes in the annual level of typhoid-paratyphoid infections do not depend on the temperature of the air and the seasonal number of winged flies. There is a pronounced direct correlation between the annual morbidity level and the frequency of summer precipitations, this correla

Using the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) to predict the risk of heat related deaths.

Extremes of climate are not uncommon in Australia and heatwaves are not infrequent. Periods of high ambient temperature may result in clusters of heat related deaths, which may place strain on forensic facilities. This paper describes the formulation of the Excess Heat Factor using meteorological data to provide a means of predicting death resulting from periods of extreme heat stress. The 2009 South Australian heatwave had the highest ranked Excess Heat Factor in Adelaide's records. There were 58 heat related deaths, with the bulk of the heat related deaths following the peak Excess Heat Fact

Comment on "Meta-analysis of meteorological conditions and rheumatoid arthritis".

This correspondence addresses critical methodological limitations in the recent meta analysis by Hu et al. regarding meteorological conditions and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We highlight issues of clinical heterogeneity arising from the conflation of disparate outcomes and inconsistent follow-up durations. Furthermore, we identify a "quality score paradox" where small-sample studies are disproportionately rated as high-quality compared to large-scale evidence. Finally, we argue that pooling data across incompatible climatic zones neglects the effect of baseline adaptation, and we suggest that

Effects of meteorological factors on tuberculosis and potential modifiers in Zhejiang Province, China.

Although some studies have explored the role of meteorological factors in the development of tuberculosis (TB), the majority have been confined to single regions, leading to inconsistent findings. Consequently, we conducted a multi-city study not only to determine whether meteorological factors significantly influence the risk of developing TB but also to assess the magnitude of these effects and explore potential modifying factors. Data on daily reported TB cases and meteorological factors were collected from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2022, across 11 cities in Zhejiang Province. A dist

Effects of meteorological factors on the incidence of varicella in Lu'an, Eastern China, 2015-2020.

Varicella (chickenpox) is a serious public health problem in China, with the most reported cases among childhood vaccine-preventable infectious diseases, and its reported incidence has increased over 20-fold since 2005. Few previous studies have explored the association of multiple meteorological factors with varicella and considered the potential confounding effects of air pollutants. It is the first study to investigate and analyze the effects of multiple meteorological factors on varicella incidence, controlling for the confounding effects of various air pollutants. Daily meteorological and

Nonlinear and threshold of the association between meteorological factors and bacillary dysentery in Beijing, China.

Previous studies examining the weather-bacillary dysentery association were of a large time scale (monthly or weekly) and examined the linear relationship without checking the linearity assumption. We examined this association in Beijing at a daily scale based on the exposure-response curves using generalized additive models. Our analyses suggested that there were thresholds for effects of temperature and relative humidity, with an approximately linear effect for temperature >12·5 °C [excess risk (ER) for 1 °C increase: 1·06%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0·63-1·49 on lag day 3] and for relati

On the problems related to natural wet bulb temperature indirect evaluation for the assessment of hot thermal environments by means of WBGT.

This paper deals with the indirect evaluation of the natural wet bulb temperature, t (nw), one of the two quantities forming the basis of the well-known wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index, considered worldwide to be a suitable and user-friendly tool for the preliminary assessment of hot thermal environments. This quantity can be measured by a wet bulb thermometer (a temperature sensor covered with a wetted wick naturally ventilated) or, if this is not available, calculated from other microclimatic parameters (i.e. the air temperature, the globe temperature, the air velocity, and the humid

[Effects of climate change on the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis in the Czech Republic in the past two decades].

The study objective was an attempt to explain uneven distribution of the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) throughout the past two decades. A sharp rise was recorded in the last decade: while 2596 TBE cases were reported in the decade 1983-1992, as many as 5892 TBE cases were reported in the decade 1993-2002, with high rates persisting also in the following years (606 TBE cases reported in 2003). Data from the database TBE EPIDAT of the National Institute of Public Health, Prague, and that of the Communicable Diseases Information System, Ostrava, were used for analysis. Meteorological

Meteorological and chemical impacts on PM2.5 during a haze episode in a heavily polluted basin city of eastern China.

Haze formation involves many interacting factors, such as secondary aerosol formation, unfavourable synoptic conditions and regional transport. The interaction between these factors complicates scientific understanding of the mechanism behind haze formation. In this study, we investigated the factors resulting in haze events in Longyou, a city located in a basin in China. Aerosol samples of PM2.5 were collected for subsequent chemical composition analysis between 11 January and 5 February 2018. The impacts of wind on PM2.5, SO2 and NO2 concentrations were analysed. Besides, the origin of air p

Characterizing global air pollution seasonality and trends through integrated satellite and meteorological analytics.

Air pollution remains a major global health and climate challenge, contributing to 6.7-8 million premature deaths annually. Using six years (2019-2024) of monthly Sentinel-5P (NO 2, SO 2, CO, O 3, and HCHO) and ERA5-Land meteorological data, this study quantified the seasonal variability, spatial regimes, and temporal evolution of global atmospheric composition. Strong and statistically significant seasonality was confirmed (ANOVA p < 0.001), with NO2 increasing by up to 40 % in winter over South and East Asia and O3 increasing by 35 % in summer across the mid-latitudes. Seasonal Mann-Kendall
