Ceftaroline for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Endovascular Infection.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) endovascular infections are associated with high mortality. The increasing reports of clinical failure and toxicities associated with first-line vancomycin provide a medical need for alternative therapies. In this narrative review, we analyze studies published from 2017 to 2025 on the efficacy and tolerability of ceftaroline, a β-lactam antibiotic with anti-MRSA activity, for off-label treatment of endovascular infections. Identified publications included 1 randomized controlled trial (RCT), 17 retrospective cohort studies, four case series, a

Necrotizing pneumonia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

We report a fatal case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced necrotizing pneumonia that was refractory to adequate vancomycin treatment (trough value, 13.1 µg/ml), drainage of hydropneumothorax, and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Despite appropriate treatment, MRSA infection can cause rapidly progressive disease with a high-case fatality rate.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infection and Treatment Options.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of infection worldwide, including a wide array of both hospital- and community-acquired infections-most commonly bacteremia, upper and lower respiratory tract infection, skin and soft-tissue infection, osteomyelitis, and septic arthritis. This chapter describes the epidemiology of MRSA infection, its ability to confer antibiotic resistance and produce a wide array of virulence factors, and its pivotal role in human infection, especially cystic fibrosis. It also provides an introduction to the strategies for treatment of both

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis causing cardiac tamponade.

Community acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an organism that can cause life threatening injuries with 6 cases of purulent pericarditis secondary to MRSA being reported so far. We report a 66 year-old -female who presented to our hospital with a two-week history of worsening shortness of breath, associated with pleuritic chest pain and chills. Patient was found to be positive for influenza type A virus two weeks prior to this presentation, but was never treated. Physical exam upon arrival showed muffled heart sounds and jugular venous distention. Electrocardiogram s

Metabolic Adaptation in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Pneumonia.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a versatile human pathogen that is associated with diverse types of infections ranging from benign colonization to sepsis. We postulated that MRSA must undergo specific genotypic and phenotypic changes to cause chronic pulmonary disease. We investigated how MRSA adapts to the human airway to establish chronic infection, as occurs during cystic fibrosis (CF). MRSA isolates from patients with CF that were collected over a 4-year period were analyzed by whole-genome sequencing, transcriptional analysis, and metabolic studies. Persistent MRSA i

Pericardial Window for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Pericarditis.

A 58-year-old man presented with tamponade and underwent an emergency pericardiocentesis. We made the diagnosis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis based on culture results and treated the patient with pericardial drainage and antibiotics as the first-line therapy. After temporary relief, reaccumulation of effusion developed. We successfully created a pericardial window using thoracotomy, and the patient's postoperative course was uneventful. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis is an extremely rare and life-threatening illness. No consensus exists c

Sinonasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: updates on treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past two decades, the management of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in chronic rhinosinusitis has posed significant challenges. This document reviews current management techniques and novel treatment modalities for sinonasal MRSA infections. RECENT FINDINGS: Topical antibiotic therapy, that is, drops (ofloxacin) and ointments (mupirocin) as off-label use for the management of MRSA chronic sinusitis, has shown beneficial results. Other more recently trialed nonantibiotic modalities such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and colloidal silver ir

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Lip Infection Mimicking Angioedema.

BACKGROUND: It is rare for angioedema to be misidentified by the experienced clinician or for it to mimic another disease process. As an Emergency Physician, it is important to recognize and treat angioedema immediately. Of equal importance is the recognition and initiation of treatment of facial cellulitis. A case report follows that illustrates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) lip infection mimicking angioedema. CASE REPORT: Here, we describe a case of a 21-year-old man who presented with a swollen lower lip, initially diagnosed as angioedema. Further investigation reveale

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a community health threat.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), one of the most common causes of infections, has been traditionally recognized as a nosocomial pathogen. However, in recent years, its epidemiology has radically changed, being now observed even more frequently in the community, and accounting for > 50% of staphylococcal infections in the US outpatient setting. Community-acquired (CA)-MRSA strains typically cause infections among otherwise healthy individuals, with risk factors differing from those of nosocomial MRSA. The clinical manifestations may range from a furuncle to life-threatening i

Treatment of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has emerged in the community among patient populations without traditional antibiotic resistance risk factors and is causing a variety of clinical syndromes, in particular skin and soft tissue infections. These infections can range from minor skin involvement that can be treated in an outpatient setting to more serious infections such as necrotizing fasciitis requiring hospitalization. Inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers must be aware of the treatment, prevention, and infection control practices for this emerging pathogen.

The molecular evolution of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is a potentially pathogenic bacterium that causes a broad spectrum of diseases. S. aureus can adapt rapidly to the selective pressure of antibiotics, and this has resulted in the emergence and spread of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Resistance to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics is caused by the mecA gene, which is situated on a mobile genetic element, the Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec (SCCmec). To date, five SCCmec types (I-V) have been distinguished, and several variants of these SCCmec types have been described. All SCCmec elements carry

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in community-acquired pyoderma.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important nosocomial pathogen. It can also cause community-acquired infections. Indian reports about MRSA in community-acquired infections are rare. AIM: To evaluate the rate of MRSA in community-acquired pyoderma and the nasal colonisation with S. aureus in such patients. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty patients with community-acquired pyoderma, who attended outreach camps around Mangalore, south India between January 2000 and July 2001, were studied. Swabs collected from the skin lesions and anterior nares were inoculated

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in ICU patients.

The incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in patients admitted to the intensive care unit has dramatically increased in recent years, with an associated increase in morbidity and mortality and the costs of caring for patients with MRSA infections. Although indiscriminate and inappropriate use of antibiotics has contributed to this phenomenon, horizontal transmission of MRSA between patients and health care providers is the principal cause of this observed increase. This article discusses the pathogenesis, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention of MRSA infe

Antimicrobial therapy of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is now one of the commonest causes of nosocomial infection worldwide. The mainstay of treatment until now has been the glycopeptides (vancomycin and teicoplanin). They are not without toxicity and need parenteral administration and monitoring of levels. The increasing frequency of MRSA infections, coupled with the emergence of glycopeptide resistance in S. aureus has made the introduction of new drugs active against Gram-positive organisms essential. New agents active against Gram-positive organisms represent either genuinely novel classes of

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in 11 dogs.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection was identified in 11 dogs. The infection was associated with surgical treatment especially orthopaedic surgery. Infection after traumatic wounding, and recurrent pyoderma was also seen. Oral antibiotic treatment improved or resolved the infection in nine of the 11 dogs, although the methicillin-resistant isolates were susceptible to relatively few antibiotics.

True community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) recently has been reported as an outpatient pathogen. We assessed this and found our institution's frequency quite low. Only 16 patients (4%) had true community-acquired MRSA bacteremia. Ten had no recorded previous hospitalization; twelve (75%) had significant underlying medical problems. Substance abuse and prior outpatient antibiotic use were not identified as major risks for community-acquired MRSA bacteremia.
