Do mosquito insecticides harm beneficial mosquitoes? Evidence from Toxorhynchites rutilus septentrionalis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Chemical interventions targeting mosquito vectors may unintentionally affect non-target beneficial mosquitoes occupying similar ecological niches. This study evaluated the susceptibility of the beneficial mosquito Toxorhynchites rutilus septentrionalis (Dyar & Knab) to commonly used mosquito control products at operational field rates and compared its responses with those of Aedes aegypti L. Two adulticides, permethrin-based Aqua-Kontrol 30-30 and bifenthrin-based Talstar P Professional, and 3 larvicides, Vectobac 12AS (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis [Bti]), Natular DT (spinosad), and Alto

Comparative Activity And Efficacy of Sumilarv 0.5G and Altosid Xr Briquet Against Culex Quinquefasciatus and Aedes Aegypti in Simulated Catch Basins.

Mosquito control plays a crucial role in the mitigation of mosquito-borne diseases. Larviciding that targets one of the aquatic stages is among the routine practices in mosquito control operations. One of the most extensive and challenging mosquito production sources in urban environments is underground storm drain systems. Along with the research and development of biorational larvicides in recent decades, numerous products based on microbial and insect growth regulators have become available. However, the performance of these products often varies because of product design and challenges ass

Diallyl trisulfide reduced the reproductive capacity of male Sitotroga cerealella via the regulation of juvenile and ecdysone hormones.

Environmental pollution and resistance in animals are major concerns for the application of synthetic pesticides. Diallyl trisulfide (DAT), an active compound in garlic essential oil, is a novel tool for active and safe control of agricultural insect pests. In this study, we analysed the effects of DAT (0.01 μL/L) on the protein content in male reproductive tissues (accessory glands, ejaculatory ducts, and testis), and juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysone titres in a highly detrimental pest of stored products, Sitotroga cerealella. Evaluation of the expression profile of JH and ecdysone pathway-

Rescuing the Inhibitory Effect of the Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus of Musca domestica on Mating Behavior.

Infection with salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) of Musca domestica prevents female flies from accepting copulation attempts by healthy or virus-infected males. This study focused on supplemental hormonal rescue therapy for mating behavior in virus-infected female house flies. The inhibitory effect of the virus on mating behavior in females injected with MdSGHV was reversed by hormonal therapy in the form of octopamine injections, topical application of methoprene, or both therapies combined along with 20-hydroxyecdysone. Infected females whose mating responsiveness had been restored c

A Case Report on Product Rotation to Manage Severe Lysinibacillus sphaericus Resistance in Culex pipiens from Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District (SLCMAD) detected a 20,000-fold resistance to Lysinibacillus sphaericus (Lsph) in Culex pipiens occurring in catch basins of Salt Lake City during 2016. In response, SLCMAD suspended use of Lsph and rotated use of spinosyn and s-methoprene products for the next three years. At the end of the third year, Lsph was evaluated again and efficacy similar to susceptible colony strains. During the second year of Lsph use, technicians observed lack of control of larvae at some urban sites. Bioassays performed during 2021 showed recurrence of some resistanc

Use of Insecticide Delivery Tubes for Controlling Rodent-Associated Fleas in a Plague Endemic Region of West Nile, Uganda.

Plague is a primarily flea-borne rodent-associated zoonosis that is often fatal in humans. Our study focused on the plague-endemic West Nile region of Uganda where affordable means for the prevention of human plague are currently lacking. Traditional hut construction and food storage practices hinder rodent exclusion efforts, and emphasize the need for an inexpensive but effective host-targeted approach for controlling fleas within the domestic environment. Here we demonstrate the ability of an insecticide delivery tube that is made from inexpensive locally available materials to reduce fleas

Egg hatching of Aedes mosquitoes during successive floodings in a Rift Valley fever endemic area in Kenya.

Floodwater Aedes breeding habitats in central Kenya were sequentially flooded to determine the numbers of mosquito eggs hatching during each flooding. Approximately 90% of the larvae sampled during 4 floodings emerged during the initial flooding. The number of Aedes eggs hatching during the second flooding was lowest of all 4 floodings, and no significant differences in the amount of egg hatching during floodings 3 and 4 were seen. Unhatched Aedes eggs were present in soil samples collected after the final flooding. The possible implications of these findings with regard to Rift Valley fever v

RNAi-mediated knockdown of juvenile hormone acid methyltransferase depresses reproductive performance in female Aethina tumida.

Small hive beetles, Aethina tumide, are free-flying parasites of social bee colonies where they feed and reproduce. In case of mass infestation, A. tumida can cause significant economic losses. There is an urgent need to explore novel green molecular approaches for sustainable control of A. tumida. It has been confirmed that juvenile hormone acid methyl transferase (JHAMT) plays a crucial role in regulating the synthesis of juvenile hormone (JH). However, its impact on female reproduction of A. tumida remains unclear. In the present study, a novel JHAMT gene was identified from A. tumida with

Changes in the Gene Expression Profiles of the Hypopharyngeal Gland of Worker Honeybees in Association with Worker Behavior and Hormonal Factors.

The hypopharyngeal glands (HPGs) of worker honeybees undergo physiological changes along with the age-dependent role change from nursing to foraging: nurse bee HPGs secrete mainly major royal jelly proteins, whereas forager HPGs secrete mainly α-glucosidase III, which converts the sucrose in the nectar into glucose and fructose. We previously identified two other genes, Apis mellifera buffy (Ambuffy) and Apis mellifera matrix metalloproteinase 1 (AmMMP1), with enriched expression in nurse bee and forager HPGs, respectively. In the present study, to clarify the molecular mechanisms that coordin

Stage-specific action of juvenile hormone analogs.

The discovery of juvenile hormones (JH) and their synthetic analogs (JHA) generated excitement and hope that these compounds will replace first- and second-generation insecticides that have not so desirable environmental and human safety profiles. However, JHAs used commercially during the past four decades did not meet these expectations. The recent availability of advanced molecular and histological methods and the discovery of key players involved in JH action provided some insights into the functioning of JHA in a stage and species-specific manner. In this review, we will summarize recent

Effect of owner-controlled acaricidal treatment on tick infestation and immune response to tick-borne pathogens in naturally infested dogs from Eastern Austria.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne infections resulting from regular tick infestation in dogs are a common veterinary health problem all over the world. The application of repellent and acaricidal agents to prevent transmission of pathogens is a major protection strategy and has been proven to be highly effective in several trials under laboratory and natural conditions in dogs. Despite such promising results, many dog owners still report tick infestation in their dogs although acaricidal agents are used. Information about the current infection status and changes of the infection status regarding tick-bor

Bifenthrin at Sublethal Concentrations Suppresses Mating and Laying of Female Conogethes punctiferalis by Regulating Sex Pheromone Biosynthesis and JH Signals.

Conogethes punctiferalis, a polyphagous pest in Asia, infests various crops, causing severe economic losses. Its larvae feed inside plants, making management challenging, with conventional insecticides. This study examines sublethal bifenthrin effects on the reproductive capabilities of adult females. Findings show sublethal bifenthrin concentrations (LC1, LC10, LC20, and LC30) significantly reduce sex pheromone production and mating success in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, these sublethal exposures influence the expression of pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide and key juve

Apparent tick paralysis by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) in dogs.

Certain tick species including Ixodes holocyclus can inoculate neurotoxins that induce a rapid, ascending flaccid paralysis in animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the most widespread tick of dogs, is recognized as a vector of several pathogens causing diseases in dogs and humans. A single report suggests its role as cause of paralysis in dogs. This study presents the clinical history of 14 young dogs heavily infested by R. sanguineus (intensity of infestation, 63-328) in an endemic area of southern Italy. During May to June of 2011, dogs were presented at the clinical examination with neurologi

Recombinant juvenile hormone esterase, an effective tool for modifying juvenile hormone-dependent expression of the early trypsin gene in mosquitoes.

The study of the changes in the steady-state levels of the early trypsin (ET) messenger RNA (mRNA) was used as a sensitive assay for measuring the effects of recombinant juvenile hormone esterase (rJHE) on juvenile hormone (JH)-dependent gene expression in mosquitoes. ET is a female-specific protease present in the midgut of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti during the first few hours after ingestion of a blood meal. Transcription of the early trypsin gene is part of the normal postemergence maturation of the midgut in the adult female, and it is regulated by JH. JHE was cloned from Heli

Apparent Ixodes tick paralysis in a cat from North America.

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old castrated male domestic longhair cat presented for acute, diffuse, flaccid paralysis. Thoracic and abdominal radiographs, biochemistry panel and complete blood count were unremarkable. Titers to Toxoplasma gondii, myasthenia gravis radioimmunoassay testing and creatinine kinase levels were within normal limits. The most likely differentials included acute toxicity (coral snake envenomation, organophosphate toxicity), botulism and, less likely, acute polyradiculoneuritis. A thorough physical examination revealed a single engorged tick attached to the ventral neck of t

Efficacy of oral afoxolaner (NexGard®) against natural infestations with Heterodoxus spiniger (Phthiraptera: Boopiidae) in dogs under field conditions.

Heterodoxus spiniger is a chewing louse of a diverse range of hosts, primarily Carnivora. Domestic dogs are considered a major host, and infestations can lead to pruritus, hair loss, or seborrhea. In the context of absence of clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of isoxazolines against H. spiniger, the study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a single oral dose of afoxolaner (NexGard®, Boehringer Ingelheim, Germany) under field conditions for the treatment of natural infestations in dogs, and to compare it with a topical contact ectoparasiticide registered in Europe for the chewing lice T
