BACKGROUND: Resting ischemic electrocardiographic abnormalities have been associated with cardiovascular mortality. Simple markers of abnormal autonomic tone have also been associated with diabetes, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome in some populations. Data on these electrocardiographic abnormalities and correlations with coronary risk factors are lacking among Mexican Americans wherein these conditions are prevalent.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalent resting electrocardiographic abnormalities among community-dwelling Mexican Americans, and correlate these findings with

Social desirability, while a recognized source of respondent bias among Mexican-Americans, has not been evaluated as an explanation for the lower rate of high expressed emotion (EE) found in the family members of Mexican-Americans versus Caucasians with schizophrenia. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the lower rate of high EE (hostility and criticism) among Mexican-Americans was the result of cultural factors impacting on how information was reported by the Mexican-American relative of a patient with schizophrenia. We compared the ratings of EE between Caucasian (N = 17) and Mexica

In sum, elderly Mexican Americans residing in an urban area were identified as a population at high risk for chronic conditions associated with age and were also at risk for health problems related to migrant status, poverty-level incomes, and low levels of education and nutrition. They are in need of care, i.e. assistance, succorance, nurturance, stress alleviation, and support in a stressful urban environment in which they encounter barriers of language, transportation, eligibility requirements, and self-perceptions of inferior ethnic identify. The family and kin groups are most important bu

Data are presented from sample surveys conducted in 1974 (N = 3,119) and 1975 (N = 657) in Alameda County, California, by the Human Population Laboratory. Mexican-Americans are compared to Anglos and blacks in terms of physician visits, dental examinations, general physical examinations, and eye examinations. Comparison of crude percentages indicates that there is very little ethnic variation in either sample regarding regular source of medical care or health insurance coverage, although the trend is for fewer Chicanos to have such coverage. In terms of physician visits, there is little differ

INTRODUCTION: Research examining the relationship between vision impairment and falls is limited among older Mexican Americans. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between vision impairment and new-onset falls among Mexican American older adults without a history of falls at baseline over 16 years of follow-up.
METHODS: The authors studied 851 participants aged ≥72 years from the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (2000/2001-2016). Fall status was categorized as having no falls and having 1 or more falls. Self-reported vision im

OBJECTIVES: Failing health is theorized as a key driver of declines in religious participation in late older adulthood. Few studies, however, have directly examined whether deteriorating health plays a role in these declines. Furthermore, health is multifaceted, yet little research has distinguished multiple aspects of health that are important for these declines in religious participation. Notably, no known research has been conducted in the Hispanic American population.
METHODS: This study uses eight waves from the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly

BACKGROUND: Arsenic, cadmium, and lead are toxic elements that widely contaminate our environment. These toxicants are associated with acute and chronic health problems, and evidence suggests that minority communities, including Hispanic/Latino Americans, are disproportionately exposed. Few studies have assessed culturally specific predictors of exposure to understand the potential drivers of racial/ethnic exposure disparities.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate acculturation measures as predictors of metal/metalloid (hereafter "metal") concentrations among Mexican American adults to illuminate

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether older Mexican-Americans who cannot speak and/or understand spoken English have higher rates of mobility limitations or fear of falling than their English-speaking counterparts.
DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1169 community-dwelling Mexican-Americans aged 72-96 years from the 2000-2001 wave of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly. Mobility limitations were defined as having a Short Physical Performance Battery score ≤9, and fear of falling by participant report of being somewhat, fairly, or very afr

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between diabetes-specific family support and other psychosocial factors with regard to diet and exercise self-care behavior among older Mexican Americans with type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: Adults aged 55 years and older who presented for care in a primary care clinic for type 2 diabetes (N=138) completed a survey to assess family support specific to diabetes, barriers to self-management, self-efficacy, and diabetes self-care activities. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the relationship between family sup

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that maternal psychologic stress can increase the risk of congenital malformations, including neural tube defects (NTDs). We examined whether maternal stress and lack of social support contribute to NTD risk in a population living along the Texas-Mexico border.
METHODS: Case mothers (N = 184) were Mexican-American women with NTD-affected pregnancies who delivered during 1995 to 2000 in one of the 14 Texas counties bordering on Mexico. Control mothers (N = 225) were randomly selected from Mexican-American women residing in the same area and delivering normal live bi

The hypothesis positing differences between Mexican Americans and whites regarding attitudes and behaviors concerning obesity and other health issues was tested. A random sample of 1171 whites and 155 Mexican Americans aged 18 to 65 was selected. Two analyses were carried out. First, overweight Mexican Americans were compared with overweight whites. Second, overweight individuals were compared with normal weight counterparts within each ethnic group. Differences between overweight Mexican Americans and overweight whites disappeared after adjusting for the effects of sex, income, educational st

A longer duration of breast-feeding and later introduction to solids may protect against excessive adiposity in infancy. This study investigated infant feeding practices and their relationship to two measures of adiposity--body mass index (BMI) and sum of skinfold thicknesses (SUMSF)--in 331 4-y-old Anglo- (43%) and Mexican-American (57%) children. No associations were detected between any of the infant feeding variables of duration of breast-feeding and introduction to solids and formula and measures of the child's adiposity. Mother's physical measures of BMI and SUMSF explained the largest p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the role of probable dementia on changes in living arrangements and mortality among very old Mexicans and Mexican Americans in 2 different nations.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We employ the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly and the Mexican Health and Aging Study, 2 comparable longitudinal data sets, to identify predictors of changes in living arrangements using multinomial logistic regression, controlling for cognitive status, demographic characteristics, and resources.
RESULTS: In Mexico, women with dementia who

Stature, sitting height, estimated leg (subischial) length and the sitting height/stature ratio are compared in Mexican American, American White and American Black boys 9 through 14 years of age and girls 12 through 17 years of age. Mexican American youth are shorter in stature and have absolutely shorter lower extremities. The sitting height of Mexican American youth is similar to that of Black youth and shorter than that of White youth. The sitting height/stature ratio is virtually identical in Mexican American and White youth, indicating similar proportions of lower extremities to stature.

OBJECTIVE: There is little asthma research that compares ethnic differences in airway responsiveness and word descriptors among African Americans, Hispanic-Mexican Americans, Asian-Pacific Islanders, and Whites. Thus, identifying ethnic differences in symptom descriptors and airway responsiveness may improve health outcomes by educating health professionals about treatment decisions that are culturally and ethnically sensitive.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies suggest that air pollution plays a role in type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence and mortality. The underlying physiological mechanisms have yet to be established. We hypothesized that air pollution adversely affects insulin sensitivity and secretion and serum lipid levels.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants were selected from BetaGene (n = 1,023), a study of insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell function in Mexican Americans. All participants underwent DXA and oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests and completed dietary and physical activity questionnaires

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Latin America holds the highest global prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), affecting up to 44.4% of the population. With the growing Hispanic population in the U.S., understanding MASLD in this group is increasingly relevant. Acculturation, the adoption of host-country norms, may influence health behavior. This study examines associations between acculturation, MASLD, and fibrosis among Hispanic American adults using a U.S. national survey.
METHODS: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020 prepandemic data

Hispanics of Mexican American descent in South Texas show a very high prevalence of MASLD, with some studies reporting rates as high as 50% in adults. However, assessment of genetic risk factors underlying this prevalence is complicated by a high co-occurrence of other metabolic disorders and variable endogenous and exogenous environmental risk factors. To map the transcriptomic architecture of MASLD hepatic steatosis risk, we conducted an epidemiological-scale investigation using human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived hepatocyte cultures from 193 participants in our longitudinal S

Mexican-Americans carry a high burden of type 2 diabetes and are disproportionately affected by diabetes related mortality and morbidity. Poor adherence to medication is an important barrier to achieving metabolic control and contributes to adverse health outcomes and health disparities. Little is known about barriers and facilitators to medication adherence among Mexican-Americans with diabetes. This is a qualitative study of semi-structured interviews with a sample of 27 adults (25 Mexican-Americans and 2 Latinos of other origin) with self-reported type 2 diabetes who were recruited as part

OBJECTIVE: Limited studies have assessed the relationship between longitudinal changes in adiposity and changes in multiple adipokines over time. This study examined changes in BMI, total body fat, and trunk fat associated with changes in 16 circulating adipokines in Mexican Americans at risk for type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: Participants included 1,213 individuals with cross-sectional data and a subset of 368 individuals with follow-up measures (mean 4.6 ± 1.5 years from baseline). Joint multivariate associations between 3 adiposity measures and 16 adipokines were assessed by canonical correlati
