Microaneurysms in the development of diabetic retinopathy (UKPDS 42). UK Prospective Diabetes Study Group.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: To determine whether microaneurysms, in the absence of other lesions, have a predictive role in the progression of diabetic retinopathy in Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Retinal photographs taken at diagnosis in patients participating in the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, and thereafter at 3 yearly intervals, were assessed using a modified Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy grading system for lesions of diabetic retinopathy and end points of vitreous haemorrhage and photocoagulation. The number of microaneurysms in each eye was re

Spontaneous occlusion of ruptured microaneurysm formed on postoperative transosseous anastomosis after indirect revascularization in a patient with moyamoya disease.

A 40-year-old female with a history of ischemic moyamoya disease treated with indirect revascularization at ages 12 and 25 years presented with a sudden severe headache. Imaging studies revealed focal parenchymal hemorrhage and acute subdural hematoma, confirming a microaneurysm formed on the postoperative transosseous vascular network as the source of bleeding. Conservative management was performed, and no hemorrhage recurred during the 6-month follow-up period. Interestingly, follow-up imaging revealed spontaneous occlusion of the microaneurysm. However, due to the rarity of this presentatio

A novel OCTA-based image processing method for enhanced microaneurysm detection and 3D visualization in diabetic retinopathy.

The early detection of microaneurysms (MA) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) is crucial for disease management. Although optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) offers non-invasive, high-resolution imags, it still suffers from insufficient sensitivity and limitations of two-dimensional imaging in MA's detection. This study proposes an innovative processing method based on retinal OCTA images that integrates blood flow signals with the hyperreflective features of MA in structural OCT, combined with three-dimensional reconstruction technology, to construct a retinal vascular image (3D-MA map)

A Systematic Review on Whether Retinal Artery Microaneurysms Are Reliable Predictors of Coronary Artery Disease Severity.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains one of the leading causes of mortality in the UK. The growing and ageing population has led to increasing CAD prevalence and escalating healthcare costs. Current diagnostic tools like coronary angiography are too invasive for large population-level screening. Retinal artery microaneurysms (RAMs) are caused by microvascular damage and are detectable via non-invasive eye screening. This raises the possibility of a novel screening tool to help identify individuals at risk of CAD. This systematic review investigates whether RAMs are a reliable predictor of CAD

[OCT-Angiography in diabetic maculopathy : Comparison between microaneurysms and the foveal avascular zone with flourescein angiography].

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography angiography allows an exact visualization of retinal vascular changes. To interpret the possibilities and limitations using OCTA in clinical practice, we analysed the quality of OCTA findings concerning the evaluability. Furthermore, we correlated our OCTA findings with fluorescein angiography (FAG) in relation of the presence of microaneurysms (MA) and enlargement of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) in diabetic maculopathy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 30 eyes from 15 patients with diabetic maculopathy were imaged in 3 × 3mm volume scans and were depicted in

Microaneurysm segmentation in early diabetic retinopathy: a localized patch-based U-Net approach to overcome microscopic lesion oversight.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment and a major long-term microvascular complication of diabetes. Early detection and prevention of diabetes-related complications through advanced imaging and software-assisted patient management remain important clinical priorities. Microaneurysms (MAs) are the earliest and most subtle indicators of DR, but their small size and low contrast often lead to missed detection during manual fundus examination, delaying intervention. Automated MA segmentation is therefore essential for large-scale DR screening. METHODS: We c

Pregnancy and delivery in women with renovascular hypertension due to multiple intrarenal microaneurysms: a report of two cases.

We herein report two cases of pregnant women who had chronic hypertension caused by renovascular hypertension due to multiple intrarenal microaneurysms from unknown causes, who had similar clinical courses. During the first pregnancy, both women developed uncontrollable severe hypertension that finally led to superimposed preeclampsia; however, during the second pregnancy, the blood pressure was controlled well, and the clinical courses were uneventful. These cases suggest that an uneventful term delivery may be achieved with adequate blood pressure control in pregnant women with chronic hyper

Effects of glycaemic control modalities on the risk of retinal microaneurysms in diabetes patients: an analysis based on NHANES data.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. Regular fundus examinations by optometrists enable its early detection and intervention, thus preventing vision loss. BACKGROUND: Patients with diabetes are particularly susceptible to microvascular complications, with retinal microaneurysms (RMAs) serve as an early indicator of these diabetic retinal microvascular complications. Although glycaemic control is the principal strategy for preventing diabetic complications, the specific effects of various blood glucose control methods on the develop

The use of vessel wall imaging to detect a de novo microaneurysm on the periventricular anastomoses in moyamoya disease: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is linked to the formation of intracranial aneurysms. The authors recently observed an effective use of magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging (MR-VWI) to detect de novo unruptured MMD-associated microaneurysms. OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe a 57-year-old female who was diagnosed with MMD 6 years ago after suffering a left putaminal hemorrhage. MR-VWI revealed point-like enhancement in the right posterior paraventricular region during the annual follow-up. On the T2-weighted image, this lesion was surrounded by high intensity. Angiography revealed a mic

Detection rate of diabetic macular microaneurysms comparing dye-based angiography and optical coherence tomography angiography.

Diabetic maculopathy (DM) is a microvascular dysfunction clinically characterized by microaneurysms (MA) leading to edema and central visual deprivation. This prospective explorative study investigated 27 eyes of 17 patients with DM by fluorescein/indocyanine green angiography (FA/ICGA; SPECTRALIS HRA-OCT, Heidelberg Engineering) and by swept source-optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA; DRI-OCT Triton Plus, Topcon) to identify clinically relevant MAs. The SS-OCTA cubes were split into the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and the deep capillary plexus (DCP) according to the autom

Spontaneous multivessel coronary artery dissection associated with microaneurysms in a young women with thyroiditis background: Unusual case report.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare condition that is frequently under-recognized. It has been connected to several triggers and predisposing factors. Interestingly, hypothyroidism has been linked to a higher likelihood of arterial dissections. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman who was admitted for acute coronary syndrome. Coronary angiography revealed signs of SCAD affecting the distal left anterior descending artery and the right ventricular branch. Additionally, microaneurysms were detected in the distal circumflex artery, the main septal artery, and a branch of
