Synthetic Shewanella-Bacillus Microbial Consortia for Enhanced Metal Oxide Leaching From Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Brewing Wastewater as Leaching Agent.

The rapid proliferation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) underscores the need for recycling, yet existing methods are costly, inefficient, and environmentally challenging. This work developed a spent LIBs recycling approach using brewing wastewater and designed a microbial consortium as a biocatalyst for facilitating metal oxide leaching. The Shewanella oneidensis reduces spent LIBs cathode LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) via extracellular electron transfer (EET) by feeding with brewing wastewater's organics, and the Bacillus subtilis removes residual ethanol to eliminate inhibition on EET. The catalyt

Proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes in microbial consortia of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) upon exposure to trace erythromycin or erythromycin-H2O.

A variety of antibiotics and their metabolites at sub-inhibitory level concentrations are suspected to expand resistance genes in the environment. However, knowledge is limited on the causal correlation of trace antibiotics or their metabolites with resistance proliferation. In this study, erythromycin (ERY) resistance genes were screened on microbial consortia of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) after one year acclimation to ERY (100 μg/L) or dehydrated erythromycin (ERY-H(2)O, 50 μg/L). The identified esterase gene ereA explains that ERY could be degraded to six products by microbes acclimat

Exploring hydrocarbons as co-substrates in Winogradsky columns towards the development of microbial consortia for accelerating the degradation of low density polyethylene in saline environments.

Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is used extensively in packaging applications due to its flexibility and durability. However, due to its recalcitrant nature, its post-consumption disposal is a major environmental challenge. This study utilizes hydrocarbon co-substrates to investigate the integrated enrichment-based biodegradation of LDPE in a saline environment. To achieve this, Winogradsky columns constructed using dumpsite soils were enriched with hydrocarbons and LDPE under saline conditions. After 180 days, diesel-supplemented systems exhibited a significantly higher weight loss (12.15 ± 2

Studies on improvement in growth, yield and antioxidant content in sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) by application of plant growth promoting microbial inoculants and consortia.

Sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.), a tuberous root crop from the Chenopodiaceae family, exhibits significant tolerance to salinity. One of its key bioactive compounds, betanin, is a type of betalain, which is known for its potent antioxidant properties. Betanin plays a crucial role in mitigating the ageing process by protecting cells against oxidative stress and damage induced by free radicals. In the present study, beet root was cultivated under saline soil conditions (pH- 8.1, EC- 5.42 dS/m) on experimental field at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, India in a randomized block design (RBD) f

Microbial Consortia-Immunoglobulin G Glycosylation Combination Scores Identify Severe Hepatic Steatosis and Significant Fibrosis in Patients with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Severe hepatic steatosis (HS) and significant hepatic fibrosis indicate severity of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and the models for early detection are important. Recent studies suggest immunoglobulin G (IgG) glycosylation and microbial consortia may involve in the development of MASLD. This study investigates the utility of IgG glycosylation and microbial consortia in early detection models. METHODS: A total of 111 patients with MASLD categorized into high vs low controlled attenuation parameter (for HS) or high vs low FIB-4 (for fibrosis).

Simultaneous volatile fatty acids promotion and antibiotic resistance genes reduction in fluoranthene-induced sludge alkaline fermentation: Regulation of microbial consortia and cell functions.

The impact and mechanism of fluoranthene (Flr), a typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon highly detected in sludge, on alkaline fermentation for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) recovery and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) transfer were studied. The results demonstrated that VFAs production increased from 2189 to 4272 mg COD/L with a simultaneous reduction of ARGs with Flr. The hydrolytic enzymes and genes related to glucose and amino acid metabolism were provoked. Also, Flr benefited for the enrichment of hydrolytic-acidifying consortia (i.e., Parabacteroides and Alkalibaculum) while reduced V

Versatile microbial communities rapidly assimilate ammonium hydroxide-treated plastic waste.

Waste plastic presently accumulates in landfills or the environment. While natural microbial metabolisms can degrade plastic polymers, biodegradation of plastic is very slow. This study demonstrates that chemical deconstruction of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with ammonium hydroxide can replace the rate limiting step (depolymerization) and by producing plastic-derived terephthalic acid and terephthalic acid monoamide. The deconstructed PET (DCPET) is neutralized with phosphoric acid prior to bioprocessing, resulting in a product containing biologically accessible nitrogen and phosphorus fr

Engineering probiotic consortia to improve chemotherapy tolerance and reduce toxicity in breast cancer patients: a new frontier in supportive precision oncology.

Chemotherapy is a cornerstone of breast cancer treatment but is often limited by systemic toxicities, gastrointestinal mucositis, immunosuppression, and treatment interruptions, which compromise patient outcomes. Emerging evidence highlights the gut microbiome as a central mediator of chemotherapy tolerance and toxicity. Cytotoxic regimens induce dysbiosis, characterized by depletion of beneficial commensals, expansion of pathobionts, and impaired microbial metabolic function, exacerbating mucosal injury, inflammation, and systemic side effects. Engineered probiotic consortia-rationally design

Non-stochastic reassembly of a metabolically cohesive gut consortium shaped by N-acetyl-lactosamine-enriched fibers.

Diet is one of the main factors shaping the human microbiome, yet our understanding of how specific dietary components influence microbial consortia assembly and subsequent stability in response to press disturbances - such as increasing resource availability (feeding rate) - is still incomplete. This study explores the reproducible re-assembly, metabolic interplay, and compositional stability within microbial consortia derived from pooled stool samples of three healthy infants. Using a single-step packed-bed reactor (PBR) system, we assessed the reassembly and metabolic output of consortia ex

Enrichment of microbial cultures able to degrade 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol: a comparison between batch and continuous methods.

Microbial cultures able to degrade xenobiotic compounds are the key element for biological treatment of waste effluents and are obtained from enrichment processes. In this study, two common enrichment methods, suspension batch and immobilized continuous, were compared. The main selection factor was the presence of 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) as the single carbon source. Both methods have successfully enriched microbial consortia able to degrade 1,3-DCP. When tested in batch culture, the degradation rates of 1,3-DCP by the two consortia were different, with the consortia obtained by batch

Variability in carbon isotopic fractionation during biodegradation of chlorinated ethenes: implications for field applications.

Stable carbon isotopic analysis has the potential to assess biodegradation of chlorinated ethenes. Significant isotopic shifts, which can be described by Rayleigh enrichment factors, have been observed for the biodegradation of trichloroethlyene (TCE), cis-dichloroethylene (cDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). However, until this time, no systematic investigation of isotopic fractionation during perchloroethylene (PCE) degradation has been undertaken. In addition, there has been no comparison of isotopic fractionation by different microbial consortia, nor has there been a comparison of isotopic fra

Microbial adaptation to H2 improves the conversion of volatile fatty acids to methane during in situ biomethanation even in CO2-depleted conditions.

The in situ biomethanation process aims to increase the CH4 content in biogas by injecting H2 into anaerobic digesters, improving its energetic value. However, H2 injection causes CO2 depletion hampering in situ biomethanation performances. This work investigated the effect of H2 addition and CO2 depletion on the adaptation of two microbial consortia to in situ biomethanation. In the in situ biomethanation reactors under CO2-non-limiting conditions (biogas CO2 concentration ∼ 18 %) CH4 was the most produced metabolite (∼80 % of the produced gCOD) whatever the microbial consortia. However, in t

Synthetic microbial consortium with specific roles designated by genetic circuits for cooperative chemical production.

Synthetic microbial consortia consisting of microorganisms with different synthetic genetic circuits or divided synthetic metabolic pathway components can exert functions that are beyond the capacities of single microorganisms. However, few consortia of microorganisms with different synthetic genetic circuits have been developed. We designed and constructed a synthetic microbial consortium composed of an enzyme-producing strain and a target chemical-producing strain using Escherichia coli for chemical production with efficient saccharification. The enzyme-producing strain harbored a synthetic

Deciphering fungal-microbial interactions: From microscale experimental models to integrative systems biology.

Fungal-microbial interactions drive key ecosystem functions and offer vast, untapped potential for the bio-economy. However, translating these natural consortia into controllable applications is hindered by the structural and metabolic complexity of the interplay. This review navigates the complexity landscape of these interactions, examining the technological trajectory from the mechanistic foundation of 1:1 dialogue to the rational design of synthetic consortia. We discuss the transition from static cultivation toward advanced microfluidic ("fungi-on-a-chip") and biomimetic platforms that re

Consortia cultivation of the Desulfobacterota from macrophyte periphyton: tool for increasing the cultivation of microorganisms involved in mercury methylation.

Invasive macrophytes are a persistent environmental problem in aquatic ecosystems. They also cause potential health issues, since periphyton colonizing their aquatic roots are hot spot of mercury methylation. Because periphytons are at the base of the trophic chain, the produced methylmercury is bioamplified through the food webs. In this work, a consortia cultivation approach was applied in order to investigate methylators in the periphyton of Ludwigia sp., an invasive macrophyte. Five growth conditions were used in order to favor the growth of different sulfate reducers, the major mercury me

Collective Microbial Effects Drive Toxin Bioremediation and Enable Rational Design.

The metabolic activity of microbial communities is essential for host and environmental health, influencing processes from immune regulation to bioremediation. Given this importance, the rational design of microbiomes with targeted functional properties is an important objective. Designing microbial consortia with targeted functions is challenging due to complex community interactions and environmental heterogeneity. Community-function landscapes address this challenge by statistically inferring impacts of species presence or absence on function. Similar to fitness landscapes, community-functi

The inside tract: The appendicular, cecal, and colonic microbiome of captive aye-ayes.

OBJECTIVES: The aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is famous for its feeding strategies that target structurally defended, but high-quality resources. Nonetheless, the influence of this digestible diet on gut microbial contributions to aye-aye metabolism and nutrition remains unexplored. When four captive aye-ayes were unexpectedly lost to persin toxicity, we opportunistically collected samples along the animals' gastrointestinal tracts. Here we describe the diversity and composition of appendicular, cecal, and colonic consortia relative to the aye-aye's unusual feeding ecology. MATERIALS
