BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Destruction of microbubbles by transcutaneous low-frequency ultrasound (LFUS) has been used to lyse adjacent clot and recanalize acutely thrombosed vessels. LFUS with intraarterial microbubbles has been shown to lyse cerebral clot rapidly in pigs without thrombolytic drugs. We hypothesized that intravenous platelet-targeted microbubbles with LFUS may be a rapid noninvasive technique to recanalize thrombosed intracerebral vessels.
METHODS: After angiography, 0.5 cc of autogenous thrombus was injected into 1 ascending pharyngeal artery of a pig, occluding it and the rete

UNLABELLED: Intrapulmonary shunting, a contributor to hypoxemia in both anesthetized and spontaneously breathing horses, may occur in association with pulmonary disease, general inhalation anesthesia, or systemic inflammation. In human medicine, transthoracic microbubble-enhanced echocardiography is a widely used method to detect intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting, especially in hepatopulmonary syndrome. This study aimed to adapt and evaluate the feasibility of this technique in horses, laying the groundwork for future clinical applications. Twelve healthy horses underwent two treatments: (

Thrombosis and its associated disorders remain critical global health threats, often causing acute organ injury and chronic complications that impair long-term prognosis. Despite clinical advances, current therapies face significant limitations, necessitating safer and more effective interventions. Ultrasound-Targeted Microbubble Destruction (UTMD) has emerged as a promising innovation, utilizing microbubble cavitation to facilitate localized drug delivery. By leveraging both stable and inertial cavitation, UTMD disrupts thrombus architecture and enhances the penetration of thrombolytic agents

The present paper focuses on evaluating the interobserver reliability of the 'Welfare Quality(®) Animal Welfare Assessment Protocol for Growing Pigs'. The protocol for growing pigs mainly consists of a Qualitative Behaviour Assessment (QBA), direct behaviour observations (BO) carried out by instantaneous scan sampling and checks for different individual parameters (IP), e.g. presence of tail biting, wounds and bursitis. Three trained observers collected the data by performing 29 combined assessments, which were done at the same time and on the same animals; but they were carried out completely

Autonomous droplet oscillations are intriguing and provide a strong inspiration for the development of active soft matter. However, they are often limited by their reliance on external gradients and slow transport. Here, we demonstrate a propulsion mechanism driven by confined interfacial reactions: the hydrogen microbubble elevator. We show that hydrogen evolution within a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) droplet and the resulting bubble pinch off modulate the droplet's effective density, inducing periodic rising and sinking cycles in a stratified fluid. These droplets reach peak veloci

Microbubbles (MBs) hold substantial promise for medical imaging and therapy; nonetheless, knowledge gaps persist between composition, structure, and in vivo performance, especially with respect to pharmacokinetics. Of particular interest is the role of the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) layer, which is thought to shield the MB against opsonization and rapid clearance but is also known to cause an antibody response upon multiple injections. The goal of this study was, therefore, to elucidate the role of the PEG layer in circulation persistence of MBs in the naïve animal (prior to an adaptive immun

Treating pathologies of the inner ear is a major challenge. To date, a wide range of procedures exists for administering therapeutic agents to the inner ear, with varying degrees of success. The key is to deliver therapeutics in a way that is minimally invasive, effective, long-lasting, and without adverse effects on vestibular and cochlear function. Microbubble-assisted ultrasound ("sonoporation") is a promising new modality that can be adapted to the inner ear. Combining ultrasound technology with microbubbles in the middle ear can increase the permeability of the round window, enabling ther

Iodine-125 (125I) brachytherapy, a promising form of radiotherapy, is increasingly applied in the clinical treatment of a wide range of solid tumors. However, the extremely hypoxic microenvironment in solid tumors can cause hypoxia-induced radioresistance to 125I brachytherapy, resulting in therapeutic inefficacy. In this study, the aim is to sensitize hypoxic areas in solid tumors using ultrasound-activated oxygen microbubbles for 125I brachytherapy. A modified emulsion freeze-drying method is developed to prepare microbubbles that can be lyophilized for storage and easily reconstituted in si

Ultrasound imaging presents many positive attributes, including safety, real-time imaging, universal accessibility, and cost. However, inherent difficulties in discrimination between soft tissues and tumors prompted development of stabilized microbubble contrast agents. This presents the opportunity to develop agents in which drug is entrapped in the microbubble shell. We describe preparation and characterization of theranostic poly(lactide) (PLA) and pegylated PLA (PEG-PLA) shelled microbubbles that entrap gemcitabine, a commonly used drug for pancreatic cancer (PDAC). Entrapping 6 wt% gemcit

Ultrasound targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) is a novel technique that is used to deliver a gene or other bioactive substance to organs of living animals in a noninvasive manner. Plasmid DNA binding with cationic liposome into nanoparticles are assembled into the shell of microbubbles, which are circulated by intravenous injection. Intermittent bursts of ultrasound with low frequency and high mechanical index destroys the microbubbles and releases the nanoparticles into targeted organ to transfect local organ cells. Cell-specific promoters can be used to further enhance cell specificity.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic infections are often sustained by biofilms, which exhibit high tolerance to antimicrobials and immune clearance. Ultrasound (US)-stimulated microbubbles (MBs) have shown promise for biofilm disruption, yet their integration with chemical anti-biofilm agents and antibiotics has not been systematically explored. This study reports, for the first time, the combined application of MBs with tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (T-EDTA), nitric oxide (NO)-releasing NONOates (PAPA NONOate and spermine NONOate) and ciprofloxacin against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilms.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic gut injury is common in the intensive care unit, impairs gut barrier function, and contributes to multiorgan dysfunction. One novel intervention to mitigate ischemic gut injury is the direct luminal delivery of oxygen microbubbles (OMB). Formulations of OMB can be modified to control the rate of oxygen delivery. This project examined whether luminal delivery of pectin-modified OMB (OMBp5) can reduce ischemic gut injury in a rodent model.
METHODS: The OMBp5 formulation was adapted to improve delivery of oxygen along the length of small intestine. Adult Sprague-Dawley rat

Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disorder, and is caused by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and can induce inflammation. Antibiotic therapy often needs to be administered for long durations in acne therapy, which results in extensive antibiotic exposure. The present study investigated a new treatment model for evaluating the antibacterial effects of lysozyme (LY)-shelled microbubbles (MBs) and ultrasound (US)-mediated LY-shelled MBs cavitation against P. acnes both in vitro and in vivo, with the aims of reducing the dose and treatment duration and improving the prognosis of acne vulgar

Potent therapeutic compounds with dose dependent side effects require more efficient and selective drug delivery to reduce systemic drug doses. Here, we demonstrate a new platform that combines intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and drug-loaded microbubbles to enhance and localize drug delivery, while enabling versatility of drug type and dosing. Localization and degree of delivery with IVUS and microbubbles was assessed using fluorophore-loaded microbubbles and different IVUS parameters in ex vivo swine arteries. Using a swine model of neointimal hyperplasia, reduction of neointima formation fol

A novel wastewater treatment technique using 8 W low-pressure mercury lamps in the presence of uniform-sized microbubbles (diameter = 5.79 microm) was investigated for the decomposition of methyl orange as a model compound in aqueous solution. Photodegradation experiments were conducted with a BLB black light blue lamp (365 nm), a UV-C germicidal lamp (254 nm) and an ozone lamp (185 nm+254 nm) both with and without oxygen microbubbles. The results show that the oxygen microbubbles accelerated the decolorization rate of methyl orange under 185+254 nm irradiation. In contrast, the microbubbles u

It is well accepted that ultrasound-induced microbubble (USMB) cavitation is a promising method for drug delivery. Ultrasound-targeted destruction of cytotoxic drug-loaded lipid microbubbles (LMs) is used to promote the treatment of cancer. This study aimed to investigate the antitumor effects from a combination of docetaxel-loaded cationic lipid microbubbles (DLLM+) and ultrasound (US)-triggered microbubble destruction (UTMD) on gastric cancer (GC). It was found that the functional dose of DOC in this study was 1 × 10-9 mol/L. We found that DLLM combined with the UTMD group showed greater gro

Microbubbles are of great interest both for ultrasound imaging and for ultrasound-assisted therapy due to their nonlinear scattering, which is enhanced by the viscoelastic shell. A full characterization of this nonlinear response is therefore crucial to fully exploit their potential. Current microbubble characterization techniques rely on assumptions regarding the microbubble shell rheology. Here, a stress-strain method is proposed to characterize the viscoelastic shells of single microbubbles with minimal underlying assumptions, which mainly entail separable viscous and elastic contributions.

Microbubble-assisted ultrasound can improve the delivery of drugs to tumors by temporarily opening biological barriers, a process commonly referred to as sonopermeation. The type of microbubbles plays a key role in this context, with size distribution and the associated degree of polydispersity being important determinants of treatment efficiency, as a broad size distribution makes it difficult to control the induced effects. Poly(butyl cyanoacrylate) (PBCA) microbubbles have been shown to be suitable for sonopermeation applications due to their narrow, tunable size distribution and unique aco

This work demonstrates the utility of microfluidic devices for characterizing diffusion mechanisms. We determined Henry's constant and characterized the diffusion process of gaseous CO2 in silicone oil. Using microfluidic techniques, we analyzed the evolution of the CO2 bubble size in a solvent flowing through a microchannel system. The reduction in bubble size due to the mass transfer of gaseous CO2 into the solvent fluid primarily affects their length. A microfluidic device was used to produce bubbles, consisting of a pressure-driven injection system for the gas and a flow-driven system for
