Impact of hatchery microclimate, breeder age and storage time on egg water loss in a tropical climate.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of incubator microclimate, broiler breeder age, and fertile egg storage duration on egg water loss in a commercial hatchery within a tropical climate. Data were collected from the environments (air-conditioned egg room and incubator) in order to perform microclimatic assessments, in which temperature (T; °C), relative humidity (RH; %) and specific enthalpy (h; kJ.kg of dry air- 1) were recorded at 10-minute intervals. Twelve Logen microprocessors were used in the egg room and one microprocessor was assigned for every three treatments in the incubators.

Ecological diversity of Anopheline mosquitoes in highland agroecosystems in relation to microclimate dynamics: implications for malaria control.

Agroecosystems in tropical regions provide diverse aquatic habitats that support Anopheles mosquitoes, which are malaria vectors. Understanding species composition, behavior, and environmental associations is essential for targeted vector control, however, ecological data from rice-growing regions in Indonesia remain limited. This study examined the diversity, spatiotemporal distribution, and ecological preferences of Anopheles mosquitoes in the rice field landscapes of the Banding Agung District, Ogan Komering Ulu Selatan Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Adult mosquitoes were colle

Heat seekers: A tropical nocturnal lizard uses behavioral thermoregulation to exploit rare microclimates at night.

Environmental temperatures play a vital role in the physiological and behavioral activity of ectotherms. Behavioral thermoregulation allows animals to modify their body temperature to optimize functions critical to fitness, including digestion, growth, reproduction, and locomotor performance. Diurnal reptiles are a classic model system to answer questions related to thermal ecology, whereas behavioral thermoregulation in nocturnal species is thought to be strongly constrained by low environmental thermal heterogeneity at night. The few studies describing the thermal ecology of nocturnal reptil

Integrating microclimate to understand vector development and disease patterns: challenges and lessons from plague in Madagascar's Central Highlands.

Plague, the zoonotic vector-borne disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, shows seasonal infection patterns across the Central Highlands of Madagascar. The disease persists within a complex ecological network involving host and vector species, all influenced by climate. Due to this complexity, links between climate, Y. pestis ecology and human infection remain incomplete. This study developed microclimate-based models to assess climatic impacts on growth cycles of plague vectors Xenopsylla cheopis and Synopsyllus fonquerniei. Using microclimatic modelling, the vector development index

Different Scales, Different Rules: How Do Temperature and Radiation Across Macro- and Microclimate Shape Forest Insect Traits?

Ecophysiological rules such as the Heat Conservation and Thermal Melanism Hypotheses, the Heat Transfer Theory or Bogert's Rule predict different relationships between insect body size, colour lightness and thermal environments. Forests provide scale-dependent thermal conditions - strong macroclimatic gradients across regions and microclimatic buffering depending on canopy density, with dense canopies producing cooler, more stable conditions and open canopies allowing higher light and heat input. Consequently, trait-environment relationships may vary accordingly. Here we test across both macro

Fine-scale monitoring of catkins reveals an association between catkin concentration and plant community characteristics and microclimate.

Catkins, as a significant source of plant-caused pollution, disrupts daily human activities and industrial processes. Despite their impact, catkins have not been included in official environmental quality monitoring indicators, leading to a deficiency in scientifically rigorous collection and monitoring methodologies, as well as a lack of ecological prevention and management strategies. In this study, we introduced a fine-scale monitoring approach for catkins. Qualitative and quantitative relationships between catkin concentrations, plant community characteristics and microclimate factors were

Spatiotemporal optimization of micro-spray misting for orchard microclimate regulation and water-use efficiency in semi-arid apple orchards.

Global warming has intensified heat and drought stress in semi-arid orchard systems, posing major challenges to sustainable apple production. Although micro-spray misting can simultaneously regulate canopy cooling and humidification, orchard responses to different spatiotemporal misting configurations remain insufficiently understood. In this two-year field study, we evaluated the effects of three misting heights (upper, middle, and lower canopy) and four misting durations (0.5-2.0 h) on orchard microclimate, physiological activity, fruit production, and water-use performance in semi-arid appl

Combination of in situ spectroscopy and chemometric techniques to discriminate different types of Roman bricks and the influence of microclimate environment.

Red and yellow bricks are the wall-building materials generally used in Roman masonries. The reasons for the different coloration are not always understood, causing loss of crucial information both for the conservation and for the archaeological knowledge of the cultural sites. In this work, a combination of in situ analyses, employing portable Raman spectroscopy and handheld energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (HH-ED-XRF) spectroscopy along with chemometric analysis, was carried out on ancient Roman bricks of the "Casa di Diana" building (Ostia Antica, Italy-130 CE). Specifically, the compou

Heat ameliorative measures in Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) heifers during summer: effect on microclimate, thermal comfort, and behavior.

Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is the mainstay of milk production in Asian countries including India. However, the hot climate of the country remains the biggest bottleneck to exploit the potential of this species. Therefore, a study was conducted to assess the effect of heat ameliorative measures on microclimate, thermal comfort, and behavior of Murrah buffalo heifers during summer. Buffalo heifers (n = 24) between the age of 15 and 20 months with a mean body weight of 363.75 ± 11.27 kg were randomly grouped into four treatments based on their age and body weight. The heifers kept in the she
