A Case of an Ex Vivo Onychomycosis Model Introduced with a Cultured Colony of Kocuria koreensis from a Diabetic Ingrown Toenail.

A 57-year-old male patient with >10-year history of type 2 diabetes presented with a left big toenail deformity and pain. A physical examination revealed a white and yellow-to-brown patch on the nail as well as thickening and ingrowth of the nail plate. The nail plate was opened using nippers, and a fungal culture revealed Trichophyton interdigitale with yellow yeast. The yeast isolate was identified as Kocuria koreensis, a Gram-positive aerobic coccoid with keratinolytic properties that is part of the normal flora of the skin. We created an ex vivo onychomycosis model of T. interdigitale infe

[Pneumonia complicated by bacteremia with Stomatococcus mucilaginosus].

A rare strain of Stomatococcus mucilaginosus (formerly Micrococcus) was isolated from blood of a patient after pneumonia, which was causing an enlargement of lymph nodes and groin fistula. Chemical composition of cell wall of this microorganism (analysis of amino acids and diagnostically important sugars), elementary composition of lipids (fatty acids, phospholipids and glycolipids) and molar percentage of guanine and cytosine (%GC), were determined. Results completely agreeable with results published elsewhere were obtained which resulted in reclassification of this species (Kocur (1982, Int.

Three novel Rothia species associated with Antarctic birds harbour novel biosynthetic gene clusters.

Antarctica's unique environment supports diverse avian populations, including penguins, skuas, and gulls. As climate-driven pressures on these populations intensify, their microbiota receives increased attention due to their relevance for host health. In this study, we investigated 11 bacterial isolates associated with Antarctic birds using a polyphasic taxonomic approach integrating genomic and phenotypic data. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences and core-genome-based phylogenomics separated the strains into three groups and genome-relatedness indices confirmed that the three lin

Elucidation of new sulfamethoxazole catabolic pathways in whole-cell catalyst of bacterium Kocuria rhizophila SA117.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and its residues exhibit high environmental persistence due to their resistance to conventional degradation processes. The bacterial strain Kocuria rhizophila SA117, isolated from polluted soils, was characterized biochemically, phylogenetically, and -omically. Herein, we describe a complete degradation pathway for SMX and determine two putative pathways: cleavage of the benzene ring and the degradation of the substituted isoxazole, leading to the formation of non-toxic Krebs cycle metabolites. Based on molecular structures containing 13C6-labeled carbons and 2H3 atoms,

Nasal irrigation increases upper-airway microbial diversity: a prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Nasal irrigation is widely recommended for chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis, but its effects on the upper-airway microbiome remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether 30 days of buffered isotonic saline nasal irrigation alters bacterial diversity in the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and oral cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten volunteers performed twice-daily irrigation for 30 days. Swabs from the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and posterior tongue were collected at baseline and day 30. Bacterial communities were analysed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The primary endpoint

Qualitative and quantitative investigations on the resident bacterial skin flora in healthy persons and in the non-affected skin of patients with seborrheic Eczema.

The composition of the aerobic and anaerobic bacterial skin flora was investigated quantitatively and qualitatively in 25 patients with seborrheic eczema (SE) and in 35 healthy persons. In SE patients, the geometric mean count for propionibacteria in the pilosebaceous ducts of the forehead was reduced to a statistically significant extent in comparison with the control group. There was the same tendency with regard to the geometric mean count of the superficial anaerobic bacterial flora of the back, whereas the geometric mean counts of the coagulase-negative staphylococci were the same in the

Quantifying Pathogen eDNA at a Trap-and-Haul Facility for Adult Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha).

Adult Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) trap-and-haul operations exist in rivers across the Pacific Northwest with the objective of re-establishing salmon populations above impoundments. These efforts are complicated by high prespawn mortality (PSM), which can hinder restoration by reducing reproductive success. Recent improvements at trapping facilities in the Willamette River Basin, Oregon, USA, may reduce PSM by streamlining trap-and-haul operations to reduce handling stress. However, studies suggest that PSM is also related to factors associated with haul operations, including fish

Eco-friendly enhancement of potato micropropagation using bacterial-derived IAA from Kocuria rosea.

Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a key phytohormone widely synthesized by soil bacteria, plays a vital role in root development and stress resilience. This study aimed to optimize the culture conditions for IAA production by Kocuria rosea SS1 and to evaluate the efficacy of bacterial derived IAA on the micropropagation of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Spunta). Maximum IAA production (10.83 mg 100 mL- 1, as quantified by HPLC) was achieved in nutrient broth at pH 7 and 30 °C, supplemented with 1 mM tryptophan and incubated under shaking conditions for three days. Nonlethal detection of Renibacterium salmoninarum in Greenback Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias comparing mucus, blood, and ovarian fluid samples to kidney tissues.

OBJECTIVE: Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease, poses a major threat to both wild and aquaculture salmonid populations. Traditional detection methods typically involve lethal sampling to collect kidney tissues but are often impractical for species of conservation concern. This study evaluates nonlethal sampling techniques for detecting R. salmoninarum in Greenback Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii stomias by comparing mucus, blood, and ovarian fluid samples to conventional kidney tissue. METHODS: During the 2019 spawning season, we collected samples

Isolation and identification methods of Rothia species in oral cavities.

Rothia dentocariosa and Rothia mucilaginosa which are Gram-positive bacteria are part of the normal flora in the human oral cavity and pharynx. Furthermore, Rothia aeria, which was first isolated from air samples in the Russian space station Mir, is predicted to be an oral inhabitant. Immunocompromised patients are often infected by these organisms, leading to various systemic diseases. The involvement of these organisms in oral infections has attracted little attention, and their distribution in the oral cavity has not been fully clarified because of difficulties in accurately identifying the

Infochemicals in mosquito host selection: human skin microflora and Plasmodium parasites.

The interaction between the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and its human host has traditionally been viewed within a bitrophic context, considering only the human and the mosquito. Recently, the influence of the Plasmodium parasite on the interaction has been recognized, because it affects the physiology and/or behaviour of humans and mosquitoes. However, studies on odour-mediated host-seeking behaviour of An. gambiae and other Diptera have provided evidence that a fourth group of organisms should be taken into consideration. Human skin microflora play a role in the production of odo

Relapsing Peritoneal Dialysis-Associated Peritonitis due to Kocuria rhizophila: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The Kocuria genus, encompassing gram-positive coccoid actinobacteria belonging to the Micrococcaceae family, has recently been discovered residing on the human skin and oral flora. Reports of Kocuria-associated infections in humans have been scarce. Herein, we present the first case of relapsing peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis caused by Kocuria rhizophila. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 78-year-old male, presented with turbid effluent PD fluid, accompanied by an elevated white blood cell count of 253 cells/μL, of which 59% were neutrophils. Kocuria rosea Sepsis in an Immunocompromised Patient: A Case Report.

Kocuria species, classified within the phylum Actinomycetota, class Actinomycetes, order Micrococcales, family Micrococcaceae, are Gram-positive coccoid bacteria. They bear morphological resemblance to Staphylococci spp and Micrococci spp, which often leads to misidentification and oversight as contaminants, given their presence as normal flora on human and animal skin and mucous membranes. Accurate identification of these organisms typically relies on automated systems such as MALDI-TOF-MS, Vitek-2 System, and 16S rRNA studies. Once considered rare, there is increasing recognition of Kocuria

Rothia mucilaginosa pneumonia: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Rothia mucilaginosa, a gram-positive coccus member of the family Micrococcaceae, is considered part of the normal microflora of the human mouth and the upper respiratory tract. Although this organism is believed to be of low virulence, it is increasingly recognized as an opportunistic pathogen mostly affecting immunocompromised hosts. METHODS: The medical literature was reviewed and we found 19 published cases of R. mucilaginosa pneumonia. We also report on a case of pneumonia attributed to this microorganism in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). RESULTS
