Lung hazards of microplastics and their toxicological mechanisms.

Microplastics (MPs), as ubiquitous environmental pollutants, pose significant risks to pulmonary health through inhalation exposure. Due to their small size, large surface area, and high permeability, MPs evade respiratory clearance mechanisms upon entering the airways and deposit in the lungs, triggering a range of multifaceted toxicological effects. Drawing upon extensive research, this review summarizes eight key mechanisms by which MPs induce lung injury including (1) Oxidative stress: MPs promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), disrupting pulmonary antioxidant defenses an

Effects of microplastics on the bones: a comprehensive review.

A growing role for the skeleton in human health and longevity emerged recently. However, knowledge regarding the effects of new risk factors, linked to modern life, for bone diseases is not documented satisfactorily. Micro- and nanoplastics (MPs) are environmental and health concerns due to their widespread detection in the human surrounding environment. This narrative review aims to critically summarize current knowledge on the effects of MPs on bone and bone marrow and to explore potential links to human bone diseases, such as osteoporosis. Worryingly, MPs were recently detected in human bon

An Overview of the Possible Exposure of Infants to Microplastics.

Microplastics are small plastic pieces with sizes less than 5 mm. They are becoming a global concern due to the potential risk to human health. The potential risks of microplastics may be greater for infants because they do not have sufficiently developed metabolizing enzymes, have less ability to remove microplastics, and have highly sensitive target organs. Infants should be breastfed for the first six months of life. Breast milk is considered to be the most complete and suitable source of nutrition. However, if breastfeeding during this period is not possible, it is necessary to use formula

Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are emerging as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease in preclinical studies. Direct evidence that this risk extends to humans is lacking. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, multicenter, observational study involving patients who were undergoing carotid endarterectomy for asymptomatic carotid artery disease. The excised carotid plaque specimens were analyzed for the presence of MNPs with the use of pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, stable isotope analysis, and electron microscopy. Inflammatory biomarkers were asses

The fate of marine microplastics in the swash zone.

This study provides the first directly comparable estimates of seawater contamination with microplastics (MPs, 0.3-5 mm) and mesoplastics (MePs, 5-25 mm) during the five sampling expeditions in November and December 2024 in the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea. Bulk seawater sampling was carried out in two nearby locations simultaneously during different stages of storm activity on sandy and pebbly sea shores. The polymeric composition of the microparticles was identified using μ-Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The maximum abundance of MPs in seawater near pebbly and sandy shores was 1360 and

Effects of microplastics on the kidneys: a narrative review.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics are small synthetic organic polymer particles (<5 mm and <1 μm, respectively) that originate directly from plastic compounds or result from the degradation of plastic. These particles are a global concern because they are widely distributed in water, air, food, and soil, and recent scientific evidence has linked MPs to negative biological effects. Although these particles are difficult to detect in humans, MPs have been identified in different biological fluids and tissues, such as the placenta, lung, intestines, liver, blood, urine, and kidneys. Human expo

Microplastics in Seafood and the Implications for Human Health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We describe evidence regarding human exposure to microplastics via seafood and discuss potential health effects. RECENT FINDINGS: Shellfish and other animals consumed whole pose particular concern for human exposure. If there is toxicity, it is likely dependent on dose, polymer type, size, surface chemistry, and hydrophobicity. Human activity has led to microplastic contamination throughout the marine environment. As a result of widespread contamination, microplastics are ingested by many species of wildlife including fish and shellfish. Because microplastics are associated

PET microplastics induce lipotoxicity in the porcine pancreas.

Microplastics are a relatively new discovered environmental hazard that can contribute to the disruption of many physiological processes in the organism. There is evidence that they affect the physiology of the pancreas, but research in this area remains limited. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the effects of PET microplastics on the global proteomic profile of the pancreas using LC–MS/MS analysis, with the pig as a model organism. The pigs were treated either with a low (0.1 g/day) or a high dose (1 g/day) of PET microplastics for four weeks. The analysis revealed that PET mi

Orthodontic derived microplastics impact macrophage differentiation and homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic polymers are widely used in medical and dental appliances, including clear aligners, retainers, splints, and sleep devices. Despite their widespread use, little is known about the release of microplastics from traditional thermoformed polymers compared with recently developed direct-printed photopolymers. Plastic particles have been detected in a variety of human tissues such as, lung, liver, spleen and kidneys. Each of these sites contain local resident macrophages tasked with maintaining homeostasis by clearing cell debris and foreign bodies. Like these organs, the oral

Polyethylene Microplastics and Human Cells: A Critical Review.

The widespread production and poor management of plastic waste have led to the pervasive presence of microplastics (MPs) in environmental and biological systems. Among various polymers, polyethylene (PE) is the most widely produced plastic globally, primarily due to its use in single-use packaging. Its persistence in ecosystems and resistance to degradation processes result in the continuous formation of PE-derived MPs. These particles have been detected in human biological matrices, including blood, lungs, placenta, and even the brain, raising increasing concerns about their bioavailability a

Microplastics in the Food System: Should We Worry?

Microplastics (MP) are increasingly recognized as contaminants of concern in the food system due to their widespread presence and potential health risks. This review investigated food contact surfaces and aquacultural and agricultural foods as the primary sources of human ingestion exposure to MP and estimated their prevalence and exposure using both particle count and mass-based approaches. Additionally, the review identified the types of foods most susceptible to MP contamination and high-risk polymers and specific usage conditions that promote MP migration. Evidence of MP infiltration and a

What Gastroenterologists Should Know About Microplastics and Nanoplastics.

Global production and widespread use of plastics are increasing dramatically. With current limited recycling and recovery options, microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) persist in the natural environment. Due to their ubiquity, human exposure to MNPs is inevitable. In addition to their inherent toxic effects, MNPs can adsorb harmful contaminants and act as vectors for microorganisms, compounding toxicological effects. After entering the body, bioaccumulation occurs in several tissues and organs, including the liver and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Proposed clinical effects of MNP absorptio

Microplastics, Nanoplastics and Heart Contamination: The Hidden Threat.

The global spread of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) has emerged as an environmental and medical concern, with growing evidence of their role in cardiovascular disease (CVD). These particles, originating from the degradation of larger plastics and consumer products, can be ingested or inhaled, cross biological barriers, and accumulate in human tissues, including blood, myocardium, and atherosclerotic plaques. Experimental and clinical studies suggest that MNPs contribute to CVD through multiple mechanisms: activation of systemic inflammation and inflammasomes, oxidative stress, endothelial dysf

Insights into PET-Microplastics effect on pathogenic bacteria.

Growing environmental and health concerns related to microplastics (MPs) exposure have prompted increasing attention, yet the toxicological impacts of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) remain poorly understood. This study investigated the dose-dependent physiological and antimicrobial susceptibility responses of four pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus) to PET-MPs exposure. The results revealed species- and dose-dependent responses. E. coli and P. aeruginosa exhibited a consistent stimulatory effect o

Quantifying abrasion of microplastics from mountain bike tires.

Current research on microplastics (MPs) primarily focuses on investigating environmental samples, often lacking in identifying the actual sources and emission quantities. Little is known about the quantity of bicycle tire abrasion in real-use scenarios. Mountain biking, a popular outdoor sport produces tire wear particles (TWP) directly in natural environments. This study quantifies microplastic abrasion from mountain bike tires in real-life usage. We measured the weight loss of mountain bike tires gravimetrically over their period of use to quantify abrasion throughout their lifecycle. We fou
