Selective oligomerization is a common phenomenon existing widely in the formation of intricate biological structures in nature. The precise design of drug molecules with an oligomerization state that specifically recognizes its receptor, however, remains substantially challenging. Here, we used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to identify the oligomerization states of an amyloid probe thioflavin T (ThT) on hIAPP8-37 assembly to be exclusively even numbers. We demonstrate that both adhesive interactions between ThT and the protein substrate and cohesive interactions among ThT molecules gover

The band structure and electronic properties of a material are defined by the sort of elements, the atomic registry in the crystal, the dimensions, the presence of spin-orbit coupling, and the electronic interactions. In natural crystals, the interplay of these factors is difficult to unravel, since it is usually not possible to vary one of these factors in an independent way, keeping the others constant. In other words, a complete understanding of complex electronic materials remains challenging to date. The geometry of two- and one-dimensional crystals can be mimicked in artificial lattices.

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are highly versatile materials due to their unique electronic, magnetic, and optical properties, which can be precisely tuned by controlling their width, edge structure, and topology. We report the on-surface synthesis and characterization of a straight N = 15 armchair GNR with periodic [18]annulene nanopores (15-pGNR). It serves as a structural link between two well-established GNRs: the pristine N = 15 armchair GNR without pores (15-AGNR) and the chevron GNR (cGNR). With the addition of the 15-pGNR reported in this study, these three GNRs form a rare experimentall

We report the first observation of controlled, strain-induced square moiré patterns in stacked graphene. By selectively displacing native wrinkles, we drive a reversible transition from the usual trigonal to square moiré order. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals elliptically shaped AA domains, while spectroscopy shows strong electronic correlation in the form of narrow bands with split Van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. A continuum model with electrostatic interactions reproduces these features under the specific twist-strain combination that minimizes elastic energy. This Letter

We report the demonstration and analysis by combined scanning-tunneling-microscopy and optical microspectroscopy of a 2D phase change experienced by a self-assembled zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) monolayer adsorbed on graphene. To probe the intrinsic properties of individual ZnPc molecules, they are spatially confined within the pores of a self-assembled 2D matrix. This confinement allows us to track a phase change induced by annealing, which we discuss in terms of a planar-square to shuttlecock molecular transition. We show that after annealing of the adsorbed ZnPc, the exposition of Zn atoms to

Adsorbate interactions and reactions on metal surfaces have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. The manners in which adsorbates perturb the surface electronic structure in their vicinity are discussed. The effects these perturbations have on other molecules are shown to be important in overlayer growth. Interactions of molecules with surface steps are addressed, and each molecule's electron affinity is shown to dictate its adsorption sites at step edges. Standing waves emanating from steps are demonstrated to effect transient molecular adsorption up to 40 A away from the ste

Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we show the phase transition between new structures of NO on Rh(111) in equilibrium with the gas phase near 300 K, in the Torr pressure range. Two phases with (2 x 2) and (3 x 3) periodicity transform into each other as the pressure and temperature change around the equilibrium P-T line. By measuring P and T at coexistence, we determined the heat of adsorption in the (3 x 3) structure. From the phase boundary dynamics, the activation energy barrier between phases were estimated. The results demonstrate that unique information can be obtained from high-press

Self-assembled monolayers of omega-(4'-methylbiphenyl-4-yl) butanethiol (H3C-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)n-SH) on Au(111) substrates were investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy and contact angle measurements. A striking polymorphism was observed upon annealing, and structural changes were paralleled by a switch in stability against exchange by other thiols from unstable to stable. The phase formed at temperatures above 413 K was characterized by a very high structural perfection over areas exceeding 105 nm2. The results suggest an additional dimension in the control of structure and properties of

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) has been predominantly demonstrated in enantiopure systems, while racemic mixtures are considered spin-inactive due to the cancellation of opposite enantiomeric contributions. Here, we demonstrate that surface-assisted symmetry breaking activates CISS in racemic systems. A racemic bis-helical [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (BTBT) derivative (Rac-1) spontaneously segregates into homochiral (M,M) and (P,P) domains, forming a two-dimensional (2D) racemic conglomerate directly visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Control of individual spins at the atomic level holds great promise for miniaturized spintronics, quantum sensing, and quantum information processing. Both single atomic and molecular spin centers are prime candidates for these applications and are often individually addressed and manipulated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In this work, we present a hybrid approach and demonstrate a robust method for self-assembly of magnetic organometallic complexes consisting of individual iron (Fe) atoms and molecules on a silver substrate using STM. We employ two types of molecules, bis(dibenzo

Self-assembled monolayers of polyalanine α-helices exhibit distinct structural phases with implications for chiral-induced spin selectivity. We combine scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretical modeling to reveal how chiral composition governs supramolecular organization. Enantiopure systems form hexagonal lattices, while racemic mixtures organize into rectangular phases with stripe-like features. Our interaction potentials derived from density-functional based tight binding calculations show that opposite-handed helix pairs exhibit stronger binding and closer packing, explaining the dense

The strong influence of surface adsorbates on the morphology of a catalyst is exemplified by studying a silver surface with and without deposited zinc oxide nanoparticles upon exposure to reaction gases used for carbon dioxide hydrogenation. Ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements indicate accumulation of carbon deposits on the catalyst surface at 200 °C. While oxygen-free carbon species observed on pure silver show a strong interaction and decorate the atomic steps on the catalyst surface, this decoration is not observed for the oxygen-

The self-assembly of star-shaped 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene molecules on Au(111) is investigated by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. STM shows that for one monolayer deposition, the molecules self-assemble into two compact nanoarchitectures: one with a rectangular unit cell and a second one with a parallelogram unit cell. DFT calculations reveal that these two compact structures are stabilized by hydrogen bonds and that the rectangular nanoarchitecture has the lowest energy. The rectangular unit cell is stabilized by two hydrog

A porphyrin derivative called 5,15-di(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (H2DCPp) with carboxyl groups successfully self-assembled on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface and its co-assembly structures with three kinds of pyridine molecules were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with atomic resolution. H2DCPp arranged in a long-range ordered structure, and both 1,4-bis (pyridin-4-ylethynyl) benzene (BisPy), 4,4'-bipyridine (BP) and 1,3,5-tris(pyridin-4-ylethynyl) benzene (TPYB) molecules successfully regulated the host molecules as guest molecules. Controlling chemical reactions on surface is of great importance to constructing self-assembled covalent nanostructures. Herein, Knoevenagel reaction between aromatic aldehyde compound 2,5-di(5-aldehyde-2-thienyl)-1,4-dioctyloxybenzene (PT2) and barbituric acid (BA) has been successfully performed for the first time at liquid/HOPG interface and vapor/HOPG interface. The resulting surface nanostructures and the formation of C═C bond are recorded through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and confirmed by attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR/FT-IR) spectrometer and UV-v

Topological solitons, which connect degenerate ground states with phase shifts, have the potential to carry topologically protected information for dissipationless informatics. While topological solitons have been discussed actively in one-dimensional materials, a soliton with a geometric Z topology has been recently found in a van der Waals material of 1T-TaS2 as a form of a mobile kink along domain walls in its charge-density-wave phase. However, details of kink kinetics and the mechanism of their motion have been obscured. Here, we reveal the kinetics and dynamics of kink solitons by tracki

The early stage of molecular oxygen adsorption on the Ag(100) surface was reexamined with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory. Using an oxygen-functionalized STM tip, we demonstrated that the simple interpretation of the individual objects randomly distributed over the surface as chemisorbed oxygen atoms is incompatible with the cross-shaped structures observed in atomic-resolution images in the current work. In our model, each feature is an oxide-like cross formed by two intersecting O-Ag-O-Ag-O chains, with oxygen atoms in vacancies in the Ag(100) layer. Further

We used scanning tunneling microscopy to study low-angle grain boundaries at the surface of nearly planar copper nanocrystalline (111) films. The presence of grain boundaries and their emergence at the film surface create valleys composed of dissociated edge dislocations and ridges where partial dislocations have recombined. Geometric analysis and simulations indicated that valleys and ridges were created by an out-of-plane grain rotation driven by reduction of grain boundary energy. These results suggest that in general, it is impossible to form flat two-dimensional nanocrystalline films of c

Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have garnered significant attention for their potential applications in energy devices such as supercapacitors and batteries due to their high electrical conductivity and large surface area. In this study, we synthesize a single-layer 2D c-MOF, Ni3(HAT)2, on a van der Waals substrate of graphite, serving as a model system for a bilayer MOF-based supercapacitor. Employing scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) and density functional theory analysis, we find that monolayer Ni3(HAT)2 retains its intrinsic structural a

Fracturing microscale constrictions in metallic wires, such as tungsten, platinum, or platinum-iridium, is a common fabrication method used to produce atomically sharp tips for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), field-emission microscopy and field ion microscopy. Typically, a commercial polycrystalline drawn wire is locally thinned and then fractured by means of a dislocation slip inside the constriction. We examine a special case where a dislocation-free microscale constriction is created and fractured in a single crystal tungsten rod with a long side parallel to the [100] direction. In the
