Systemic markers of microvascular disease and bone mineral density in older adults : The cardiovascular health study.

UNLABELLED: Here we report that abnormal brain white matter and, to a lesser extent, albuminuria are associated with reduced bone mineral density in the hip, spine, and total body in men and women. These findings may explain the increased hip fracture risk reported in some studies in association with microvascular disorders. INTRODUCTION: Markers of microvascular disease have been individually associated with increased risk of osteoporotic fractures in some studies. Here, we examine whether these markers are associated with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) individually and together. METHOD

Reproducibility of microvascular vessel density analysis in Sidestream dark-field-derived images of healthy term newborns.

OBJECTIVE: Microcirculatory visualization has already been used to investigate buccal and cutaneous microcirculatory alterations in neonates. Still, the reproducibility of these microvascular measurements has never been studied in (premature) neonates. This study aimed to determine the reproducibility of microvascular vessel density in cutaneous and buccal SDF clips in one-day-old term newborns. METHODS: Buccal and cutaneous microcirculations were measured using SDF imaging. Vessel density was independently assessed by two investigators. Reproducibility was assessed from the ICC and Bland-Alt

The association of microvascular disease and endothelial dysfunction with vertebral trabecular bone mineral density : The MESA study.

UNLABELLED: Retinopathy and albuminuria are associated with hip fracture risk. We investigated whether these disorders and endothelial dysfunction (which underlies microvascular diseases) were associated with low trabecular bone density. No significant associations were found, suggesting that microvascular diseases are not related to fracture risk through low trabecular bone density. PURPOSE: Microvascular diseases of the eye, kidney, and brain are associated with endothelial dysfunction and increased hip fracture risk. To explore the basis for higher hip fracture risk, we comprehensively exa

Seeding density is a crucial determinant for the in vivo vascularisation capacity of adipose tissue-derived microvascular fragments.

Adipose tissue-derived microvascular fragments (ad-MVF) represent effective vascularisation units for the seeding of dermal substitutes. However, particularly in case of extensive skin defects, the required amounts of donor fat tissue for the harvesting of ad-MVF may not always be available. Therefore, we herein determined the lowest ad-MVF density needed to induce a sufficient vascularisation and incorporation of seeded implants. Collagen-glycosaminoglycan matrices (Integra®; diameter: 4 mm) were seeded with 15,000 (HD), 10,000 (MD) and 5,000 (LD) ad-MVF and implanted into full-thickness skin

Lack of correlation between microvascular density and pathological features and outcomes in sinonasal and oral mucosal melanomas.

Unlike its cutaneous counterpart, prognostic markers for primary mucosal malignant melanoma have not been well elucidated. It has been recently demonstrated that microvascular density (MVD) in cutaneous malignant melanoma has a significant negative correlation with survival; however, this has not been well-studied in mucosal malignant melanoma of the head and neck. This study explores the potential association between MVD, various histological parameters, and the outcome of a series of sinonasal and oral mucosal melanomas. Nineteen such cases were immunostained with CD31 and the MVD was calcul

Microvascular Density, Endothelial Area, and Ki-67 Proliferative Index Correlate Each Other in Cat Post-Injection Fibrosarcoma.

Soft tissue sarcomas are a large group of different tumor types both in humans and in animals. Among them, fibrosarcoma is the most frequent malignant mesenchymal tumoral form in cats, representing up to 28% of all cat skin tumors, while human fibrosarcoma, fortunately, only represents 5% of all sarcomas and 0.025% of the world-wide burden of tumors. This low incidence in humans leads to consideration of this group of tumoral diseases as rare, so therapeutic options are few due to the difficulty of starting clinical trials. In this context, the identification of research models for fibrosarcom

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptors expression and microvascular density in benign and malignant thyroid diseases.

Angiogenesis is critical for the growth and metastatic spread of tumours. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the most potent inducer of neovasculature, and its increased expression has been related to a worse clinical outcome in many diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between VEGF, its receptors (VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2) and microvessel density (MVD) in thyroid diseases. Immunostaining for VEGF and VEGF receptors was performed in 66 specimens of thyroid tissue, comprising 17 multinodular goitre (MNG), 14 Graves' disease, 10 follicular adenoma, 8 Hashimoto's

Association of Maternal Antiangiogenic Profile at Birth With Early Postnatal Loss of Microvascular Density in Offspring of Hypertensive Pregnancies.

Offspring of hypertensive pregnancies are more likely to have microvascular rarefaction and increased blood pressure in later life. We tested the hypothesis that maternal angiogenic profile during a hypertensive pregnancy is associated with fetal vasculogenic capacity and abnormal postnatal microvascular remodeling. Infants (n=255) born after either hypertensive or normotensive pregnancies were recruited for quantification of postnatal dermal microvascular structure at birth and 3 months of age. Vasculogenic cell potential was assessed in umbilical vein endothelial cells from 55 offspring base

Study of microvascular structure in keloid and hypertrophic scars: density of microvessels and the efficacy of three-dimensional vascular imaging.

We have investigated the blood vessels in keloids and hypertrophic scars, both morphologically and statistically. We also tried to construct three-dimensional images of blood vessels in a keloid and hypertrophic scar to clarify the vascular patterns. Keloids (n = 16) and hypertrophic scars (n = 12) were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and immunostained with anti-CD31 antibody. The capillary density (number/1.0 mm(2)) and length of the major and minor axes were measured, and the major:minor axis ratio was calculated. Eighty serial sections were prepared from the preparations. Using image p

Uric Acid-to-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio and Coronary Slow Flow: An Integrative Marker of Microvascular Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Coronary slow flow (CSF) is an angiographic finding characterized by delayed distal vessel opacification despite normal epicardial coronary arteries. Its pathophysiology is multifactorial and involves microvascular dysfunction, endothelial impairment, and chronic inflammation. The uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (UHR) has recently emerged as a novel composite biomarker reflecting both pro-oxidant and anti-inflammatory balance. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between UHR and CSF. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 218 p

Relations between GPR4 expression, microvascular density (MVD) and clinical pathological characteristics of patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC).

G-protein coupled receptor 4 (GPR4) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) activated by sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC). Later studies indicated that GPR4 can serve as a proton sensor. GPR4 has been known to play a critical role in the tube formation of vascular endothelial cells, and GPR4 overexpression is observed in various types of malignancies, suggesting its involvement in the cancer-related angiogenesis. In this study, we examined the GPR4 expression levels in blood vessels of ovarian cancer, and analyzed the relationship between GPR4 expression and t
