Efficacy of a Novel Telehealth Application in Health Behavior Modification and Symptomology in Military Service Members at Risk for Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Mobile applications (apps) may be beneficial to promote self-management strategies to mitigate the risk of developing post-traumatic osteoarthritis in military members following a traumatic knee injury. This study investigated the efficacy of a mobile app in facilitating behavior modification to improve function and symptomology among military members. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a preliminary pre and post hoc analysis of a randomized control trial. The MARX scale, Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain (ICOAP) questionnaire, and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritic Outc

Measles and mumps among service members and other beneficiaries of the U.S. Military Health System, January 2007-December 2014.

Measles and mumps are highly communicable infectious diseases whose causative viruses are spread through airborne droplets and infected surfaces. Individuals at highest risk are infants and unvaccinated individuals. Despite effective vaccines, there have been recent increases in incidence in the U.S. of both infections. During the surveillance period, there were 14 confirmed measles cases and 99 confirmed mumps cases among U.S. military members and other beneficiaries of the U.S. Military Health System. Only one of the confirmed cases of measles was in a service member. Children aged 5 years a

Sleep characteristics, mental health, and diabetes risk: a prospective study of U.S. military service members in the Millennium Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Research has suggested that a higher risk of type 2 diabetes associated with sleep characteristics exists. However, studies have not thoroughly assessed the potential confounding effects of mental health conditions associated with alterations in sleep. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We prospectively assessed the association between sleep characteristics and self-reported incident diabetes among Millennium Cohort Study participants prospectively followed over a 6-year time period. Surveys are administered approximately every 3 years and collect self-reported data on demographics, heig

Association between experiencing gambling problems and adverse behavioral health outcomes among U.S. military service members, 2018.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling screening in the US military was mandated in 2019, but few studies have assessed the prevalence of experiencing gambling problems or its association with adverse behavioral health concerns. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from active-duty U.S. military service members participating in the 2018 iteration of the Health-Related Behaviors Survey (n = 17,098). Individuals experiencing gambling problems were identified with the 2-item Lie-Bet screener, a well-validated screener. Psychological distress was measured with the Kessler-6. Outcomes also incl

Cutaneous Body Image: How the Mental Health Benefits of Treating Dermatologic Disease Support Military Readiness in Service Members.

It is well established that many common skin diseases may result in mild to severe cosmetic disfigurement. Similarly, patients with these conditions have an increased risk for depression, anxiety, feelings of stigmatization, and self-harm ideation. There also is an increased risk for hospitalizations for mental health in patients with acne, rosacea, and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Cutaneous body image (CBI) is an individual's mental perception of the condition of their hair, nails, and skin. A positive CBI may be related to increased quality of life, and a negative CBI may be associated wit

Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Active-Duty Military Personnel: Utilization of Chaplains and Other Mental Health Service Providers.

Military chaplains not only conduct religious services, but also provide counseling and spiritual support to military service members, operating as liaisons between soldiers and mental health professionals. In this study, active-duty soldiers (N = 889) reported help-seeking behaviors and mental health. Using logistic regressions, we describe the issues for which soldiers reported seeking help, then outline the characteristics of those who are most likely to seek help from a chaplain. Of the soldiers who sought help from a chaplain within the previous year, 29.9% reported high levels of combat

Pertussis diagnoses among service members and other beneficiaries of the U.S. Military Health System, January 2005-June 2012.

Pertussis ("whooping cough") is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Individuals at highest risk are infants and unvaccinated children; however, there have been recent increases in incidence among adolescent and young adult populations in the United States. During the surveillance period, there were 476 confirmed and 3,073 probable cases of pertussis among U.S. military members and other beneficiaries of the U.S. Military Health System. Among service members there were 77 and 13 confirmed cases in active and reserve component members, respective

Self-reported adverse health events following smallpox vaccination in a large prospective study of US military service members.

In December 2002, the Department of Defense re-instituted smallpox vaccination for US military forces following growing concerns that smallpox might be employed as a bioterrorist weapon. More than one million service members have been given the smallpox vaccine since 2002, although there have been concerns about the safety of the vaccine. Using a large self-reported prospective database, this analysis investigated a wide variety of self-reported health outcomes and possible association with smallpox vaccination. After confirming self-reported vaccination history with electronic vaccine data, 4

Sexual orientation moderates the association between health care utilization-related factors and mental health service nonutilization among United States military veterans.

This study examined mental health treatment nonutilization among sexual minority versus heterosexual Veterans with demonstrated psychiatric need. Data were analyzed from 820 Veterans with psychiatric need who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of U.S. military Veterans. Results revealed that current mental health service nonutilization did not differ between sexual minority versus heterosexual Veterans (70.5% vs. 74.0%). Significant interactions between sexual orientation and sex assigned at birth, primary sou

External cause coding of injury encounters in the Military Health System among active component U.S. service members, 2016-2019.

Knowledge of injury causes is essential for prevention. To investigate cause coding in service members' electronic medical records, injury encounters from 2016 to 2019 containing at least 1 external cause code were analyzed. Approximately 10% of incident injury encounters contained at least 1 cause code describing the mechanism, activity, or place of occurrence. Less than 2% of overuse injury encounters had a cause code each year, compared to 36.4-44.0% of acute injuries occurring from 2016 to 2019. Cause coding occurred more frequently in records from military facilities compared to outsource

The Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Corticosteroid Therapy in Acute Acoustic Trauma: 15 Years' Experience at the Czech Military Health Service.

BACKGROUND: Acute acoustic trauma (AAT) ranks, among others, as one common cause of inner ear function impairment, especially in terms of military personnel, who are at an increased exposure to impulse noises from firearms. AIM OF THIS STUDY: 1. We wanted to demonstrate whether early treatment of AAT means a higher chance for the patient to improve hearing after trauma. 2. We find the answer to the question of whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) has a positive effect in the treatment of AAT. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data for the period 2004-2019 in patients with AAT. We eval

The relationship between childhood poverty, military service, and later life depression among men: Evidence from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood poverty has been associated with depression in adulthood, but whether this relationship extends to later life major depression (MD) or is modified by military service is unclear. METHODS: Data come from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) 2010 wave, a longitudinal, nationally representative study of older adults. Men with data on military service and childhood poverty were included (N=6330). Childhood poverty was assessed by four indicators (i.e., parental unemployment, residential instability) experienced before age 16. Military service was categorized as veteran vers

Biomedical Evaluation of Early Chronic Kidney Disease in the Air Force: Building a Predictive Model from the Taiwan Military Health Service.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common diseases worldwide. The increasing prevalence and incidence of CKD have contributed to the critical problem of high medical costs. Due to stressful environments, aircrew members may have a high risk of renal dysfunction. A better strategy to prevent CKD progression in Air Force personnel would be to diagnosis CKD at an early stage. Since few studies have been conducted in Taiwan to examine the long-term trends in early CKD in Air Force aircrew members, this study is highly important. We investigated the prevalence of CKD and est

Individual and Military Factors That Modify the Association Between Recent Sexual Trauma and Health Outcomes Among U.S. Service Members and Veterans.

Sexual trauma (ST), which includes both sexual harassment and sexual assault, is associated with a variety of adverse mental and physical health outcomes in military and civilian populations. However, little is known about whether certain individual or military attributes or prior experiences may modify the relationship between recent ST and mental or physical health outcomes. Data from a longitudinal cohort study of current and former military members were used to examine whether individual and military factors modify the association between recent ST and health outcomes (posttraumatic stress

Behavioral Health Outcomes in the 12 Months Following Major Limb Loss Among Active Duty Service Members Treated in the Military Health System, 2001-2017.

INTRODUCTION: Over 2,100 active duty service members (ADSM) have experienced traumatic limb loss since 2001. Combat-injured ADSMs have over 3 times the odds of developing a behavioral health condition as compared to those with noncombat injuries. Additionally, severity of injury has been associated with increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, which increase the risk of suicidal behavior. Despite previous research, studies have not investigated incident behavioral health diagnoses in the 12 months following amputation and the highest-risk subpopulations. MATERIALS AND

Military service and health-related quality of life among gay and bisexual prostate cancer survivors: Results from the Restore-2 study.

INTRODUCTION: There are notable disparities in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between gay and bisexual men (GBM) and heterosexual patients with prostate cancer (PCa); however, the role of past military service is unclear. This study examines HRQOL differences in GBM PCa survivors based on reported military service history. METHODS: We used data from the 24-month follow-up survey of the Restore-2 study, a clinical trial which evaluated a rehabilitation programme for GBM PCa survivors. PCa HRQOL was assessed using the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC-50) and the Functional

Absolute and relative morbidity burdens attributable to various illnesses and injuries among non-service member beneficiaries of the Military Health System, 2025.

This annual summary documents health care services provided by the Military Health System to beneficiaries of U.S. service members in 2025, including family members, retirees, and family members of retirees. Analysis of 2025 data reveals that non-service member beneficiaries of the Military Health System remain overwhelmingly reliant upon outsourced care: Roughly 70% of TRICARE-eligible and more than 91% of Medicare-eligible individuals received their health care exclusively from civilian providers. The 2025 data also reveal distinct, age-related burdens of morbidity. While both mental health
