Outbreak of acute hepatitis E virus infection among military personnel in northern Ethiopia.

An outbreak of acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection occurred from October 1988 to March 1989 in military camps in northern Ethiopia. The epidemic was waterborne and entirely confined to military men, of whom 423 hospitalized, icteric patients were studied. The clinical course was mild and short, without any fulminant hepatitis or death. All sera tested for anti-HAV-IgM were negative and among 54 (13%) patients who were positive for HBsAg, 7 (2%) were positive for anti-HBc IgM. On the other hand, 28 of 30 (93%) patients had antibodies against hepatitis E virus (anti-HEV) in contrast to 1 of

[The prevention of intestinal anthroponoses among military personnel].

In the 40th Army the hepatitis A and typhoid morbidity in enlisted personnel of the 1st year service period was 2.5 times higher than in enlisted personnel of the 2nd year service period. The greatest number of these sick cases took place in autumn and winter periods. The seasonal up-grade of shigellosis and acute intestinal infections of non-dysenteric etiology had its beginning in April-May and ended in November-January. Some garrisons had achieved a considerable efficiency in prophylaxis of hepatitis A by 2-3 ml immunoglobulin injections 2 months before the expected up-grade (morbidity redu

Emergence of norovirus GI.2 outbreaks in military camps in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks occurred at two military camps. This study details the epidemiological findings, explores possible origins, and discusses preventive measures. METHODS: Investigations included attack rate surveys, symptom surveys, hygiene inspections, and the testing of water, food, and stool samples. DNA/RNA was extracted from stool samples and amplified via real-time reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR). Partial and full-length capsid nucleotide sequences were obtained, phylogenetic relationships inferred, and homology modelling of antigenic sites

Pseudofolliculitis Barbae in the U.S. Military, a Review.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), also known as ingrown hairs commonly results from adherence to military grooming standards in those who have curly facial hair. Many patients respond to specific grooming techniques or topical medications but severe cases often warrant restrictions on shaving or laser therapy. The treatment of PFB is challenged not only by grooming standards but also evolving readiness requirements. More recently, the Navy discontinued permanent restrictions on shaving because of concerns for poor gas mask fitting. The goal of this review is to outline the history

Female warfighters' perceptions of urogenital health in operational settings.

BACKGROUND: An increased incidence in hygiene-related urogenital infections (bacterial vaginitis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and urinary tract) has been reported in female warfighters serving in austere environments with decreased availability of water and sanitation resources, and when personal safety outweighs concerns for hygiene. Knowledge and access to an innovative kit designed for the female warfighter to self-test, self-identify, and self-treat common urogenital symptoms is critical to force health. PURPOSE: The purpose of this descriptive, cross-sectional, exploratory qualitative stud

Prevalence and awareness of tinea pedis in Italian sailors.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to carry out studies on the prevalence of tinea pedis in the community. Some studies are performed on selected groups of subjects, exposed to the same risk factors, i.e. schoolchildren, public bathers, athletes and military men. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to detect in a sample of military men the prevalence of tinea pedis and the awareness of their condition, and to relate the infection to risk factors of the group as well. METHODS: 410 male Italian navy cadets in an Italian navy petty officers school were clinically examined and mycological cultures were

Acanthamoeba keratitis in a U.S. Army soldier after unauthorized use of contact lenses in the combat theater.

A 25-year-old active duty Army E-5 developed severe infectious keratitis in his left eye secondary to soft contact lens (CL) wear while deployed in Iraq, necessitating evacuation to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. Initial clinical examination at Walter Reed Army Medical Center was suggestive of Acanthamoeba keratitis, a serious corneal pathogen associated with CL wear. In vivo confocal microscopy demonstrated Acanthamoeba cysts in the epithelium and anterior stroma, and smears and cultures from an epithelial biopsy specimen confirmed the diagnosis of Acant

Cardiac deaths after a mass smallpox vaccination campaign--New York City, 1947.

During the first wave of the 2003 smallpox vaccination campaign, two ischemic cardiac deaths occurred in civilian vaccinees aged 55 and 57 years, and one occurred in a military vaccinee aged 55 years, 4-17 days after vaccination with the New York City Board of Health (NYCBOH) vaccinia strain. Whether these and 13 other recognized military and civilian nonfatal ischemic events among vaccinees were associated with smallpox vaccination is unclear. The same NYCBOH strain was used in 1947 to vaccinate approximately six million New York City (NYC) residents (80% of the population) during a 4-week pe

Shipboard Contact Dermatitis: An Understudied and Impactful Cause of Occupational Contact Dermatitis.

Occupational contact dermatitis represents a significant concern within the United States Navy. Specifically, contact dermatitis that develops in a shipboard environment represents a unique concern, often leading to unplanned personnel losses. By identifying substances responsible for allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, dermatologists, through performing expanded patch testing and making recommendations to military commanders, play an important role in managing these patients, via ordering expanded patch testing panels and making recommendations to workplace commanders. This article aims
