AIM: To study the association between serum levels of milk protein IgG and IgA antibodies and milk-related gastrointestinal symptoms in adults.
METHODS: Milk protein IgG and IgA antibodies were determined in serum samples of 400 subjects from five outpatient clinics in Southern Finland. Subjects were randomly selected from a total of 1900 adults undergoing laboratory investigations in primary care. All 400 participants had completed a questionnaire on abdominal symptoms and dairy consumption while waiting for the laboratory visit. The questionnaire covered the nature and frequency of gastroin

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines emphasize early introduction to potentially allergenic foods, but the optimal timing, amount, and exposure routes for foods other than peanut are not well-established. Cow's milk is often the first allergenic food introduced through infant formulas.
OBJECTIVE: To examine timing of cow's milk protein introduction (CMPI), including interaction with formula supplementation after delivery, in relation to reported cow's milk adverse reactions throughout childhood.
METHODS: Among children in the Boston, Mass-area Project Viva cohort, we assessed timing of CMPI (<2 we

UNLABELLED: A 5-year-old atopic boy unaffected by cow's milk protein allergy experienced several anaphylactic reactions after eating food containing "pecorino" cheese made from sheep's milk. Prick-prick tests were strongly positive to sheep's buttermilk curd and 'pecorino' sheep's cheese. Skin prick tests to fresh sheep's milk and to goat's milk were also positive, whereas they were negative to all cow's milk proteins, to whole pasteurized cow's milk and to cheese made from cow's milk. Specific IgE antibodies were negative to all cow's milk proteins.
CONCLUSION: Sheep's milk and cheese derive

The levels of individual proteins and other nitrogen containing substances differ considerably between cow's milk and human milk. Therefore, during manufacture of infant formulas, attempts are made to simulate the protein composition of human milk. However, the composition and nutritional characteristics of human milk protein are incompletely known. In this paper, the protein quality of breast milk protein with and without the non-protein-nitrogen (NPN) substances present in human milk was studied with growing rats and compared to two formulas, one "adapted" commercial infant formula and a sug

Using Astral DIA quantitative proteomics, this study characterized serum protein profiles and potential functions of goat milk from different altitude regions. A total of 1446 proteins were identified, with 1268, 1256, and 1346 proteins detected in high-altitude, mid-altitude, and low-altitude samples, respectively. The high-altitude sample contained 34 unique proteins and showed higher abundances of α-lactalbumin, serum albumin, and polymeric immunoglobulin receptor, whereas the low-altitude sample contained 87 unique proteins and higher abundances of several immune-related proteins, includin

The bioactivities of peptides encrypted in major milk proteins are latent until released and activated by enzymatic proteolysis, e.g. during gastrointestinal digestion or food processing. The proteolytic system of lactic acid bacteria can contribute to the liberation of bioactive peptides. In vitro, the purified cell wall proteinase of Lactococcus lactis was shown to liberate oligopeptides from beta- and alpha-caseins which contain amino acid sequences present in casomorphins, casokinines, and immunopeptides. The further degradation of these peptides by endopeptidases and exopeptidases of lact

It has been suggested that high serum level of food proteins antibodies (especially cow's milk protein antibodies) may have a specific meaning in the diagnosis of food allergy, especially presenting with gastrointestinal complaints. In our study we tested with enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay test (ELISA) the antibody serum level to cow's milk and soy proteins in 123 children. The following patients were included in the study: 30 children with cow's milk enteropathy (CME), 27 children with soy proteins intolerance (SI), 19 coeliac children on gluten containing diet (CD), 9 coeliac children

1. Rabbits hand-reared on a diet based on cow's milk frequently experience convulsive and sometimes fatal reactions to their feed. These have been thought to be caused by immunological hypersensitivity to cow's milk. 2. This explanation has been re-examined and found to be untenable.

Biological and histological studies were performed in 42 cases of gastro-intestinal intolerance to cow's milk proteins. Hypoproteinemia was present in 2/3 of the cases, anemia in 3/4. Malabsorption syndrome (steatorrhea, xylose) was overt in less than 1 patient out of 2. Serum level of vitamin A was more frequently depressed than that of vitamin E and folinic acid. Intestinal biopsy, performed in 32 children, showed consistent abnormalities, a partial atrophy of the villi being most often seen (26 cases). Eosinophilia was present in 50% of the cases. A titer of anti-milk agglutinins of 1/64 or

Background: Sporadic reports have been published with regard to allergic reactions in patients with bovine milk allergy after receiving parenteral lactose-containing methylprednisolone. Persistent milk allergy is a risk factor for other atopic diseases, in which corticosteroids, e.g., methylprednisolone, are commonly an adjunctive treatment. Laboratory investigations to validate the presence of residual milk protein as the cause for reactions are scarce. Thus, individualized recommendations for the use of methylprednisolone in patients with milk allergy remain undefined. Objective: We hypothes

Cow's milk is mainly used in the production of infant milk formulas. However, the protein composition of cow's milk differs significantly from the proteome of breast milk. In addition, various technological factors significantly affect the properties and structure of proteins, susceptibility to oxidative processes. This article uses a method of complex evaluation of the products of oxidative modification of proteins to characterize the total level of carbonyl compounds with the analysis of the ratio of aldehyde-dinitrophenylhydrazones (ADNPH) and ketone-dinitrophenylhydrazones (CDNPH), which i

This is a concluding part of the three-part article from a series of reviews on the abundance and roles of intrinsic disorder in milk proteins. In this paper, we describe the peculiarities of metal binding to a multifunctional milk protein, α-lactalbumin, which has two domains, a large α-helical domain and a small β-sheet domain connected by a calcium binding loop. It is known that in addition to four disulfide bonds, the native fold of this protein is stabilized by binding of a calcium ion. In fact, although in various mammals, α-lactalbumins are rather poorly conserved possessing the overall

Despite being one of the main pathogens involved in ruminant mastitis, little is known about what proteins Staphylococcus aureus does express, in vivo, during the infection. Here, two S. aureus strains were isolated from curds formed within the udder of two ewes suffering from gangrenous mastitis. Protein samples were prepared from cell fractions and were analyzed using 1D-LC MS/MS. Results were compared to 1D-LC MS/MS analysis of the same S. aureus strains grown in ewe milk. A total of 365 proteins were identified. Most of them were related to cellular metabolism, cellular division and stress

Milk and colostrum is a rich source of proteins/peptides which have crucial roles in both neonates and adults. Milk bioactive proteins and peptides are potential health-enhancing nutraceuticals for food. Many bioactive peptides/proteins may be used as nutraceuticals, for example, in the treatment of cancer, asthma, diarrhea, hypertension, thrombosis, dental diseases, as well as mineral malabsorption, and immunodeficiency. The following components of milk are of particular interest in the recent years: 1) Lactoferrin [Lf] has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasite and antitumor acti

Adult guinea pigs received intragastrically solutions of milk whey protein concentrate (CWPM), its enzymatic hydrolysate (HWPM) and peptide fraction (PF) obtained by means of HWPM ultrafiltration. Milk protein antigen content of CWPM, HWPM and PF was preliminary characterized with two-dimensional and rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Undigested beta-lactoglobulin (beta LG) absorbed from the gut, was measured three hours after the administration by means of competitive radioimmunoassay. Administration of proteins was repeated twice with daily intervals. Twenty one days later the levels of circulati

Cow milk protein allergy (CMPA) is a prevalent food allergy in infancy. It often presents with symptoms that overlap with other conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, lactose intolerance, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, and eosinophilic esophagitis. This diagnostic overlap makes distinguishing CMPA from its mimics difficult, resulting in potential misdiagnoses and unnecessary dietary restrictions. This review aims to comprehensively analyze CMPA and its mimicking conditions, highlighting their clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies t

The clinical response and the histological changes in the mucosa of the small bowel in response to continued feeding with cows' milk protein were assessed over a period of 2-6 weeks in 24 infants who had shown histological changes without immediate clinical symptoms after challenge with a diet containing cows' milk protein. Twenty of the 24 infants (83%) thrived well on cows' milk protein. Jejunal biopsy specimens taken six to eight weeks after the initial biopsy showed histological improvement in all 20 infants compared with biopsy specimens taken soon after the challenge, which had shown muc
