Dairy farmers have minimal knowledge of bovine tuberculosis: A cross-sectional study in Bhutan.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic disease of cattle and the leading cause of zoonotic tuberculosis. In Bhutan, there is no dedicated program for bTB despite the country being situated in the bTB enzootic region, where a large section of population relies on cattle and raw milk and, dairy products are widely consumed. To contribute to the design of future education, surveillance, mitigation, and control programs, we investigated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices relevant to bTB among dairy farmers. We surveyed 264 farmers in Thimphu, Paro, and Haa Dzongkhags. These farmers contribute

Fifty years of tsetse control in Tanzania: challenges and prospects for the future.

Tsetse flies are the vectors of trypanosomes, the causative organisms of trypanosomiasis, nagana, in animals and sleeping sickness in man. In Tanzania, tsetse transmitted trypanosomiasis is one of the most important disease affecting both animals and humans. About 40% of land suitable for grazing and areas with high agricultural potential are currently tsetse infested. It is estimated that about 4.4 million livestock and 4 million people are at risk of contracting tsetse borne trypanosomiasis. African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) causes loss in animals due to mortality and reduced milk yield,

Plasma values of polyunsaturated fatty acids in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants fed breast milk or formula very early in life.

The influence of very early enteral feedings on plasma fatty acid levels in 29 sick, very premature infants with gestational age < 30 weeks was assessed at age 1, 3 and 7 weeks. Eighteen infants (birthweight 963 +/- 245 g, gestational age 27 +/- 1.3 weeks) received breast milk and 11 infants (829 +/- 159 g and 26 +/- 1.3 weeks) received formula, starting with small amounts on the first day after birth. Plasma phospholipid arachidonic acid (AA) levels decreased in both groups, but only the decline at 3 weeks in the formula-fed group was statistically significant (10.6 +/- 0.5 versus 8.0 +/- 0.4

Breastfeeding practices and health-seeking behavior for neonatal sickness in a rural community.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of mothers and grandmothers regarding breastfeeding and health-seeking behavior for neonatal sickness in a rural community. A cross-sectional survey, using a triangulation of qualitative (focus group discussion) and quantitative (structured questionnaire) methods was carried out. Although most of the grandmothers and mothers believed in early feeding within 2 h of delivery, they often administered prelacteal feeds such as ghutti and honey. Colostrum was considered beneficial. Most respondents believed that ghutti, water, or both should be give

Impact of a pre-school milk on nutrient status, intake and growth in children aged 3-5 years old: a 16-week randomized, parallel clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests there is an increasing burden of malnutrition in the Philippines due to insufficient or deficient consumption of micronutrients and energy. This open-label, randomized, prospective clinical study examines the impact of the consumption of a pre-school milk for young children on micronutrient status, nutritional intake, and growth. METHODS: Healthy, singleton, term Filipino children aged 3-4.5 years were randomized to receive a fortified pre-school milk product (n = 56; INT) or consume their habitual diet (n = 55; CTRL). The primary outcome was nutritional s

Prevalence of mastitis pathogens and their resistance against antimicrobial agents in dairy cows in Brandenburg, Germany.

The primary objective of this study was to determine management practices concerning mastitis in Brandenburg, Germany, the prevalence of mastitis pathogens in dairy cows, and their resistance to selected antimicrobial agents. A further objective was to study the potential effect of parity and stage of lactation on the resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolates against ampicillin. Milk samples for microbiological culture were collected from 4 groups of clinically healthy cows (first lactation, >1 lactation, >50 d in milk, and >250 d in milk; 8 cows/group) in 80 dairy herds. Resistance of gram

Graduate Student Literature Review: Detecting health disorders using data from automatic milking systems and associated technologies.

This review synthesizes a range of research findings regarding behavioral and production responses to health disorders and subsequent illness detection for herds using automatic (robotic) milking systems (AMS). We discuss the effects of health disorders on cow behavior and production, specifically those variables that are routinely recorded by AMS and associated technologies. This information is used to inform the resultant use of behavior and production variables and to summarize and critique current illness detection studies. For conventional and AMS herds separately, we examined research fr

Scurvy due to restrictive diet in a child with autism spectrum disorder: case report.

Scurvy is a very uncommon entity in pediatric population. Some case reports have been published in infants fed with boiled milk, in patients with iron overload secondary to hematological diseases and in children with food restrictions secondary to neurodevelopmental disorders. We report a case of a 4-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, which developed scurvy secondary to a long-term selective eating habit without fruit or vegetable intake. The objective of this case report is to announce the pediatrician and other professionals dedicated to primary health care a

Energy expenditure of critically ill neonatal foals.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Nutritional support in critically ill neonatal foals is of great importance given their high metabolic rate and minimal stores of energy and protein. Nutrient requirements of healthy growing foals have been estimated based on daily milk intake; however, little is known about the resting energy expenditure (REE) of sick foals. OBJECTIVES: To determine REE in critically ill neonatal foals (sepsis and/or hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy [HIE] and compare this with REE in control foals. METHODS: Critically ill newborn foals admitted to the Fundació Hospital Clinic V

The costs of interdigital phlegmon in four loose-housed Finnish dairy herds.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to provide detailed herd level cost information about an outbreak of interdigital phlegmon (IP), which has been an emerging problem with enlarged loose house barns in Finland in recent years. During enlargement, the farmer's financial situation is sensitive because of the large investments to the farm business and unexpected costs can risk the farm's survival. RESULTS: The University of Helsinki research herd and three commercial herds having outbreaks of IP in 2012 or 2013 were visited to collect detailed information about the costs and economic impact of

Herd Health Troubles Potentially Related to Aluminium Grass Silage Content in Dairy Cows.

In ruminants, the main documented clinical manifestation of aluminium (Al) intoxication is similar to grass tetany. In a 50 dairy cow Belgian herd, the farmer reported excessive uterine bleeding at calving and decreased milk production. Dairy cows received a mixed ration (MR) with high Al concentration (453 ppm/kg of dry matter (DM)). Various analyses were sampled from 10 sick cows and compared with 10 healthy cows (from another herd). Sick cows presented anaemia and marginal hypozincaemia and 6/10 showed subclinical ketosis. Their urine analysis revealed hypomagnesaemia and a high Al/creatini

Knowledge and attitudes towards food safety among Canadian dairy producers.

The Canadian dairy industry has recently begun implementing an on-farm food-safety (OFFS) program called Canadian Quality Milk (CQM). For CQM to be effective, producers should be familiar with food-safety hazards in their industry and have an adequate understanding of on-farm good production practices that are necessary to ensure safe food. To assess their knowledge and attitudes towards food safety, a postal questionnaire was administered to all (n=10,474) Canadian dairy producers enrolled in dairy herd-improvement organizations in 2008. The response rate was 20.9% (2185/10,474). Most produce

Risk factors associated with Mycoplasma agalactiae infection of small ruminants in northern Jordan.

Serological detection of Mycoplasma agalactiae was carried out in 104 small ruminants flocks consisting of 18 sheep, 27 goat and 59 flocks containing both sheep and goats in northern Jordan between 2002 and 2003. At least 5 serum samples per flock were tested using an indirect ELISA for antibodies to M. agalactiae. To increase the chances of detecting this mycoplasma, sick or older animals were sampled. A high seropositivity to M. agalactiae was found in small ruminants suggesting a major role for M. agalactiae in contagious agalactia in northern Jordan. There was no significant difference in

Vitamin D and bone health in the elderly.

The state of vitamin D nutrition depends on synthesis in the skin under the influence of sunlight as well as on dietary intake. In European countries that do not fortify milk with vitamin D, reduced sun exposure is the major factor leading to a fall in body stores of vitamin D with age and to a high frequency of hypovitaminosis D in the elderly sick. In the US, because vitamin D is added to milk and the use of vitamin D supplements is more common, the dietary intake of vitamin D is relatively more important than in Europe, and the total vitamin D intake and body stores of vitamin D are general

Milker's nodules: classic histological findings.

Milker's nodule is an occupational dermatovirose caused by Parapoxvirus, which is self-limited and, due to the lack of information of health professionals, may lead to underdiagnosis. We present two cases with exuberant manifestations and classic histopathologic findings. Case 1: Male, 19 years of age, milker, presented nodules and blisters on his palm for 15 days. Case 2: Male, 33 years of age, administrative assistant, presented erythematous nodules on his palms with lymphangitis for 5 days. He had milked a cow one week before the onset of the lesions. In both cases, the histopathology was r

Impact of postpartum health disorders on metabolic status and reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows.

This study evaluated the impact of the presence of diseases within the first 21 days in milk (DIM) in dairy cows on metabolic status after the voluntary waiting period (VWP), conception at first service, infectious disease seroconversion, and the association between metabolic status at first artificial insemination (AI) and conception at first service. Cows were classified as sick (n = 48) or healthy (n = 75) based on diseases within 21 DIM. Blood samples were obtained at first AI (D0), pregnancy diagnosis (D30), and pregnancy confirmation (D60) after the first AI. Samples were analyzed for gl

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the omega-3 and omega-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of donor human milk for preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Donor human milk (DHM) is commonly used to supplement feeds for preterm and sick infants with insufficient breastmilk. It is unclear whether DHM provides the same amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA), as maternal breastmilk. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review summarizing the evidence on the LCPUFA composition of DHM. METHODS: PubMed was searched up to January 2026 to identify studies reporting DHA and AA profiles of DHM. Where possible, potential influences of DHM L

Task-shifting for lactation support to enhance mother's own milk use in neonatal intensive care unit: a quality improvement initiative.

Mother's own milk improves outcomes for sick and preterm neonates, yet its use in many neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) remains suboptimal. This quality improvement study aimed to increase proportionate consumption of expressed breast milk (EBM) in the NICU and exclusive (EBF) and any breastfeeding (ABF) at discharge by ≥20% above baseline within 12 weeks using sequential Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and sustain gains thereafter. Root-cause analysis identified poor role clarity in lactation support. In the first implementation phase, neonates receiving <50% EBM were identified during t
