Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy added to usual care improves eating behaviors in patients with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder by decreasing the cognitive load of words related to body shape, weight, and food.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) as a complementary approach in patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge eating disorder (BED), and to assess how the reduction of the cognitive load of words related to eating disorders (ED) could constitute an intermediate factor explaining its global efficacy. METHODS: Eighty-eight women and men participated in clinical assessments upon inscription, prior to and following 8-week group MBCT. Mindfulness skills were assessed using the five facet mindfulness questionnaire; eating beha

Complementary therapies for cancer patients: what works, what doesn't, and how to know the difference.

Cancer patients, with their multiple symptoms and layers of suffering, are presenting many challenges to the treating physician and are turning to complementary mind-body therapies in increasing numbers. The utilization of mind-body medicine and other complementary therapies is growing at rates faster than Western medicine, and physicians are more commonly being questioned about potential benefits and risks of these therapies. This article discusses hypnosis and mind-body approaches in the care of the cancer patient, and offers suggestions regarding the evaluation of complementary medicine the

What can the psychoneuroimmunology of yoga teach us about depression's psychopathology?

Depression, the most prevailing mental health condition, remains untreated in over 30% of patients. This cluster presents with sub-clinical inflammation. Investigations trialling anti-inflammatory medications had mixed results. The lack of results may result from inflammation's complexity and targeting only a few of depression's abnormal pathways. Mind-body therapies' biological and neuro-imaging studies offer valuable insights into depression psychopathology. Interestingly, mind-body therapies, like yoga, reverse the aberrant pathways in depression. These aberrant pathways include decreased c

Mind-Body Interventions for Rehabilitation Medicine: Promoting Wellness, Healing, and Coping with Adversity.

Physical medicine providers work to cure organic aspects of disease while simultaneously enhancing quality of life and well-being. Mind-body interventions are evidence-based, cost-effective approaches to serve these aims. This article enhances provider knowledge and acceptance of the most effective and prevalent mind-body modalities: meditation, guided imagery, clinical hypnosis, and biofeedback. The scientific evidence is strongest for mind-body applications for chronic pain, primary headache, cardiac rehabilitation, and cancer rehabilitation, with preliminary evidence for traumatic brain inj

Mind-Body Interventions for People With Cancer: Evidence, Innovation, and Implementation.

Many people with cancer (PWC) continue to experience persistent biopsychosocial and existential challenges across the cancer care continuum. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, cancer-related fatigue and pain, sleep disturbance, fear of cancer recurrence, cognitive impairment, and reduced quality of life remain highly prevalent during and after treatment, underscoring the need for interventions that address both psychological and physiological dimensions of distress. Mind-body interventions encompass a diverse group of practices that explicitly target the bidirectional relationship between m

Impact of mind-body treatment interventions on quality of life in neurofibromatosis patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Individuals with neurofibromatosis (NF) experience poorer quality of life (QoL), in part contributed by the clinical manifestations of NF, such as functional disability, chronic pain, and altered physical appearance. Mind-body therapies (MBTs) tailored to NF have been developed, and have demonstrated promising potential to improve QoL in this population. We sought to systematically review current evidence on the effectiveness of MBTs in addressing QoL deficits in NF patients. Databases were reviewed between the date of inception and June 2020, using search terms: neurofibromatosis, schwannomat

Meditation training for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and their caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease that is clinically characterized by progressive weakness leading to death by respiratory insufficiency, usually within three years. Although the patient's intellect and personality usually remain unimpaired, as the disease progresses, the patient becomes immobile, develops wasting, and speech becomes impaired, often resulting in social isolation and a high degree of psychological suffering. Mindfulness meditation has proven to be effective technique for reducing distress in many chronic disease

Systemic Sclerosis Patients Experiencing Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program: The Beneficial Effect on Their Psychological Status and Quality of Life.

Psychological concerns in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) patients represent an important issue and should be addressed through non-pharmacological treatments. Thus, the aim of the present study was to assess the effects of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on psychological variables and the perspectives and experiences of patients with an SSc diagnosis. Notably, 32 SSc patients were enrolled and assigned to either the intervention (MBSR) group or the waitlist group. Inclusion criteria were (i) age ≥ 18 years, SSc diagnosis according to EULAR/ACR diagnostic criteria and informed c

Mind-body practices for people living with HIV: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Mind-body practices are frequently used by people living with HIV to reduce symptoms and improve wellbeing. These include Tai Chi, Qigong, yoga, meditation, and all types of relaxation. Although there is substantial research on the efficacy of mind-body practices in people living with HIV, there is no summary of the available evidence on these practices. The aim of this scoping review is to map available evidence of mind-body practices in people living with HIV. METHODS: The Arksey and O'Malley (Int J Soc Res Methodol 8:19-32, 2005) methodological framework was used. A search of 1

The Association Between Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Health Status Following Acute Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are commonly used in patients with cardiovascular disease. Although there is lack of evidence regarding the benefit of CAM on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, health-status benefits could justify CAM use. HYPOTHESIS: Adoption of mind-body CAM after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is associated with improved health status, though other forms of CAM are not associated with health-status improvement. METHODS: Patients with AMI from 24 US sites were assessed for CAM use (categorized as mind-body, biological, and manipulative ther

Hypnosis applications to the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Current evidence-based therapies considered efficacious for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) include Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and medication treatments. Hypnosis, one of the first mind-body therapies known to Western medicine, has been used for mind-body problems such as conversion reactions, medication-less anesthesia, and wound healing. Because PTSD is a mind-body problem, hypnosis seems especially suited for its treatment. Hypnosis is a state-based treatment that can move PTSD patients into a s

A journey within: Reflections on sleep apnea, evolution, and the mind-body axis in sleep medicine.

This reflective travelogue explores obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as more than a physiological disorder, framing it within evolutionary, psychosomatic, and cultural dimensions. It examines how human bipedalism and sleep posture may predispose to OSA, while drawing parallels with animal observations and ancient traditions. Symbolic interpretations of sleeping positions highlight the interplay of mind, body, and consciousness. The essay critiques CPAP therapy as effective yet mechanistic, envisioning integrative approaches combining modern science with mindfulness, yoga, and chronobiological pra

[Physical activity in cancer - effectiveness of exercise therapy approaches].

The positive effects of oncological exercise therapy are sufficiently proven according to scientific studies. International evidence-based guidelines confirm this importance and recommend physical exercise as part of the standard therapy for cancer. The effects of physical activity on cancer-specific deficits are versatile ranging from positive impact on fatigue syndrome, mortality, incontinence, lymphoedema, CIPN, anxiety, depression to reduction of pain. According to current knowledge, sensorimotor training is recommended for the treatment of polyneuropathy. The actual effectiveness of vibra

Body-oriented therapies for the treatment of eating disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with eating disorders often experience disturbances of body experience across the domains of cognition, affect and perception. Some body-oriented therapies (BOT) - body-oriented psychological therapies (BOPT) and holistic body-oriented therapies (HBOT) - aim to improve mind-body connection and body experience and help people feel differently about managing their eating behaviours. This review aimed to identify and describe these BOT for eating disorders, investigate their effects and explore patients' experiences. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA gu

The role of non-ordinary states of consciousness occasioned by mind-body practices in mental health illness.

BACKGROUND: Research with hallucinogens suggests that non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSCs), particularly mystical-type experiences, predict improvements in various affective disorders and substance use disorders (SUDs). Little is known, however, about the therapeutic potential of NOSCs induced by mind-body practices such as meditation, yoga and breathwork. METHODS: We conducted a literature review in online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar) and preprint databases (SSRN, bioRxiv) to identify studies of NOSCs induced by mind-body practices and their effects in affective disorde

Mindfulness-Based Interventions in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Mindfulness-based interventions may be beneficial psychosocial treatments for improving the health and well-being of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This article reviews eight studies, assessing seven psychosocial interventions, which include mindfulness and/or meditation components. Strongest effects of the interventions were found in quality of life and anxiety/depression, with inconsistent or minimal changes in other psychosocial areas, such as perceived stress and in disease-related outcomes and other physiologic functioning. Mindfulness interventions for patients with inflammato
