Minimal clinically important difference of the Hand20 after carpal tunnel release and associated patient factors.

BACKGROUND: Although carpal tunnel release is a widely performed treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, postoperative functional recovery and satisfaction vary among patients. The Hand20 is a patient-reported outcome measure specifically designed to assess upper extremity function, but its minimal clinically important difference (MCID) remains undefined. This study aimed to estimate the MCID for the Hand20 in patients undergoing carpal tunnel release. METHODS: This retrospective study included 169 patients who underwent carpal tunnel release and completed the Hand20 preoperatively and 6 months

Minimal clinically important difference for cognitive scales in people with Parkinson's disease with cognitive impairment.

Cognitive impairment (CI) is a significant non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), necessitating effective assessment tools to evaluate treatment efficacy. Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) thresholds provide critical benchmarks for interpreting cognitive intervention outcomes. This study establishes MCID values for PD Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS), Scales for Outcomes in PD-Cognition (SCOPA-COG), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) in PD-CI. A total of 110 patients with PD-CI were recruited; 105 (mean age 71.96 ± 2.40 years) completed the 12-week Dual-Task Training

Minimal Clinically Important Difference on Cognitive Measures for Huntington's Disease Using Function as an Anchor.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive measures in Huntington's disease (HD) play an important role in clinical trial endpoint strategies; however, clinically meaningful change in these measures is difficult to interpret. Cognition is a key predictor of function, and measures of functional capacity can be used as anchors to determine minimally clinically important differences (MCID) on measures of cognition. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate the MCID for cognitive measures commonly used in clinical research using two functional capacity measures as anchors. We also compared MCID estimates made using functional

Quantifying Tinnitus Perception Improvement: Deriving the Minimal Clinically Important Difference of the Minimum Masking Level.

PURPOSE: Tools that can reliably measure changes in the perception of tinnitus following interventions are lacking. The minimum masking level, defined as the lowest level at which tinnitus is completely masked, is a candidate for quantifying changes in tinnitus perception. In this study, we aimed to determine minimal clinically important differences for minimum masking level. METHOD: A 3-month tinnitus intervention combining counseling and sound therapy was conducted in 74 participants with chronic tinnitus. Minimum masking levels were measured at baseline and 3 months. The clinical global im

External Validation of the Minimal Clinically Important Difference of FeNO Using the Asthma Control Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in asthma is uncertain. The American Thoracic Society (ATS) suggests this may be a relative change ≥ 20%; however, this recommendation is not validated against a clinical outcome measure. A secondary analysis of two randomised controlled trials (RCTs) examining associations between changes in FeNO and the Asthma Control Questionnaire-5 (ACQ-5) may help estimate the MCID. METHODS: The PRACTICAL and Novel START were 52-week RCTs that compared as-required short-acting beta-agonists with or w

Minimal Clinically Important Difference and Patient-Acceptable Symptom State in Orthopaedic Spine Surgery: A Review.

»: Minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and patient-acceptable symptom state (PASS) are both metrics at interpreting patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). »: MCID values tend to vary significantly depending on the baseline pain and function in both acute and chronic symptom states while PASS thresholds are more stable. »: MCID values are more easily attainable than PASS thresholds. »: Although PASS is more relevant to the patient, it should continue to be used in tandem with MCID when interpreting PROM data.

Patient Factors Influence Minimal Clinically Important Difference for the SNOT-22 in Medically Treated Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: The present study explores the effect of sociodemographics and comorbidities on the calculated minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) scores in patients with medically treated chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The importance of delineating a threshold to indicate clinically meaningful changes perceived by a patient is well acknowledged, yet the influence of patient-specific factors on MCID has not been fully elucidated. METHODS: Patients with CRS (n = 221) presenting to a tertiary care practice reported their change in disease burde

Minimal clinically important difference for the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire: new insights and review of literature.

No consensus exists about the minimal clinically important difference for the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire, which hampers its clinical application. This study assessed the minimal clinically important difference of this questionnaire. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire was completed by 180 patients, with clinically defined carpal tunnel syndrome, preoperatively and at about 8 months follow-up after carpal tunnel release, together with a six-point scale for perceived improvement. Receiver operator characteristics curves showed that relative changes in Symptom Severity Scale and Functi

Defining the minimal clinically important difference for olfactory outcomes in the surgical treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is a common and defining symptom of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Many measures of olfactory dysfunction in CRS are limited by scoring criteria defined within general populations with interpretations of statistical significance to infer clinically meaningful improvement. In this investigation we define a minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for the Brief Smell Identification Test (BSIT) in CRS patients electing endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHODS: A multicenter cohort of 290 adult patients electing ESS for medically recalcitrant CRS were prospec

Defining the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the Heinrichs-carpenter quality of life scale (QLS).

To determine the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) of the Heinrichs-Carpenter Quality of Life Scale (QLS). Data from the "Schizophrenia Trial of Aripiprazole" (STAR) study were used in this analysis. The MCID value of the QLS total score was estimated using the anchor-based method. These findings were substantiated/validated by comparing the MCID estimate to other measurements collected in the study. Half of the patients (49%) showed improvement in Clinical Global Impressions of Severity (CGI-S) during the trial. The estimated MCID of the QLS total score was 5.30 (standard error:

Research progress on sagittal balance and minimal clinically important difference after two-level lumbar spondylolisthesis surgery.

Sagittal alignment influences functional recovery after surgery for two-level lumbar spondylolisthesis, yet evidence specific to this population remains limited. This review synthesizes current findings on postoperative changes in lumbar lordosis (LL), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), pelvic tilt, and pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch (PI-LL), and examines their associations with patient-reported outcomes. Available studies indicate that two-level fusion generally produces greater LL correction than single-level fusion, although restoration of global sagittal balance and ideal PI-LL match

Most-Cited Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Within Otolaryngology-Revisiting the Minimal Clinically Important Difference: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) allow clinicians and researchers to assess health-related information from a patient's perspective. These measures have been used more frequently over the last several decades, but an associated minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is needed to optimize their utility. This narrative review identified the top 100 most-cited otolaryngology-related PROM development and validation publications and assessed the presence and characteristics of the PROMs' associated MCID. OBSERVATIONS: In this narrative review, a literature search in Sc
