Embryonic death in mink due to riboflavin deficiency.

Riboflavin deficiency has been produced experimentally in mink by adding to the feed 10--20 mg galactoflavin--anti-B2 vitamin--per animal daily during the pregnancy. The experiment included 44 standard female mink (Table II). Riboflavin deficiency led to embryonic death; none of the mated females in the deficient group delivered kits. At the expected time of birth, six of the females were subjected to uterectomy or investigative laparatomy, which showed remnants of embryos that were mostly decomposed (Figs. 1 and 2). In a parallel group, four of six females on the same diet with the same doses

Muscular dystrophy of mink: a new animal model.

Muscular dystrophies comprise an important group of inherited disorders of man. Although the disease has been studied extensively, little is known about the underlying primary pathomechanisms. Consequently, treatment of patients is difficult and prognosis is poor. An animal model of muscular dystrophy is a useful research tool for approaching the basic problems of pathogenesis in muscle diseases. An inherited progressive muscular dystrophy of mink which resembles the amyotonic forms of human muscular dystrophy is currently under study. Clinically, the earliest sign is progressive muscular weak

Ticks From Mink and Their Associated Microorganisms in Spain.

Wildlife is an important source of emerging zoonotic agents, including tick-borne ones. Wild carnivores such as mink are commonly parasitized by ticks, which are vectors and reservoirs of zoonotic diseases. Besides the importance of these arthropods as potential sources of diseases in mink, and the role of these mammals as reservoirs of infectious diseases, scarce studies of microorganisms of ticks from mink have been performed. In the present work, ticks collected from mink (European mink [Mustela lutreola] and American mink [Neogale vison]) from 2007 to 2021 in the North of Spain, and their

Luteal contribution to the termination of preimplantation delay in mink.

Five groups of mink were mated once between March 17-19 (Day O), Group 1, designated intact controls, received no further treatment. The remaining four groups of mink underwent unilateral ovariectomy on the day following mating. At that time, preovulatory follicles were transplanted to the ipsilateral kidney capsule of two groups (3 and 5) to become ectopic corpora lutea (CL). The second ovary was removed from all of the animals in Groups 2-5 on Day 8 after mating. At that time animals in Groups 4 (ovariectomized) and 5 (ovariectomized + ectopic CL) received 1-g Silastic implants releasing pro

Replication and Transmission of Influenza A Virus in Farmed Mink.

Farmed mink are frequently exposed to circulating influenza A viruses (IAVs), as confirmed by viral isolation and serological evidence. Previous work reveals that naïve mink serve as susceptible hosts for both avian and human influenza strains, highlighting their potential role in influenza ecology. In this study, we investigated whether farmed mink naturally pre-exposed to H9 retain the capacity to serve as "mixing vessels" for reassorting human and avian IAVs. Our results demonstrate that they remain fully susceptible and permissive to infection by both avian H6N6 and human H1N1 influenza st

[Effect of mutilus hydrolysate in Aleutian disease of minks].

Addition of mutilus hydrolysate MIGI-K to rations of minks with virus plasmacytosis involving grave immunological disorders led to changes in the ratio of serum protein fractions and in the differential blood count. Normalization of the protein spectrum of minks with Aleutian disease apparently inhibits the development of disorders caused by hypergammaglobullnemia.

Toleration of high concentrations of dietary zinc by mink.

Adult and kit male and female natural dark ranch mink (Mustela vison) were fed a conventional diet supplemented with 0, 500, 1,000, or 1,500 ppm zinc, as ZnSO4.7H2O, for 144 days. No marked adverse effects were observed in feed consumption, body weight gains, hematologic parameters, fur quality, or survival. Zinc concentrations in liver, kidney, and pancreas of the mink increased in direct proportion to the zinc content of the diet. Histopathologic examination of the livers, kidneys, and pancreata revealed no lesions indicative of zinc toxicosis. The results indicate that mink can tolerate at

Brain and spinal cord lesions in encephalitozoonosis in mink.

Central nervous system lesions were studied by light microscopy in 43 farmed mink, aged 5 months to 2 1/2 years, with spontaneous encephalitozoonosis and showing cataractous eye changes. Lesions were found in the brain and spinal cord of all animals examined but were generally mild and chronic. The lesions were consistent with those previously described in spontaneous encephalitozoonosis in other carnivores. Parasites in parasitophorous vacuoles and free or phagocytosed in necrotic and granulomatous lesions were demonstrated in animals aged 5 months to 1 year. The occurrence of arterial lesion

Aleutian disease of mink. Prevention of lesions by immunosuppression.

Mink that were homozygous recessive for the Aleutian gene (aa) were inoculated with Aleutian disease virus (ADV) and simultaneously treated with cyclophosphamide (Cy). Control mink were inoculated with ADV. All mink were injected with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and their anti-BSA antibody response was measured to monitor the influence of drug therapy on the humoral antibody response. Formation of anti-BSA antibody was markedly suppressed and the hypergammaglobulinemia and development of AD lesions was inhibited in the Cy-treated mink. The non-Cy-treated control mink developed characteristic si

Molecular epidemiology of Aleutian mink disease virus causing outbreaks in mink farms from Southwestern Europe: a retrospective study from 2012 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: Aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV) causes major economic losses in fur-bearing animal production. The control of most AMDV outbreaks is complex due to the difficulties of establishing the source of infection based only on the available on-farm epidemiological data. In this sense, phylogenetic analysis of the strains present in a farm may help elucidate the origin of the infection and improve the control and biosecurity measures. OBJECTIVES: This study had the following aims: characterize the AMDV strains from most outbreaks produced at Spanish farms between 2012-2019 at the molecu

Polymorphism of the RNF165 Gene in American Mink (Neogale vison) as a Potential Factor Responsible for Resistance to Infection with the Aleutian Mink Disease Virus.

Background: Advances in American mink (Neogale vison) genomics have identified candidate genes linked to disease resistance, including RNF165, which is involved in immune response and virus-host interactions. Objectives: This study aimed to characterize genetic variation within the RNF165 (Ring Finger Protein 165) gene in farmed and wild mink to identify polymorphisms potentially associated with resistance to Aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV). Methods: Two groups of mink were analyzed: farmed animals from Latvia (n = 50) and wild animals (n = 20) from Poland. The presence of viral DNA was ver

Neuropathologic features of Aleutian disease in farmed mink in Ireland and molecular characterization of Aleutian mink disease virus detected in brain tissues.

A neuropathologic survey was conducted on mink brains from the 5 licensed mink farms in Ireland. The survey was part of a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy surveillance study. Aleutian disease (AD) was present on 4 of the 5 farms (80%). Neuropathologic features of nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis were common in mink from the 4 affected farms but were absent in the mink from the fifth farm, which was free of AD. The meningoencephalitis was characterized by infiltrates of lymphocytes and plasma cells, which were present in meninges, perivascular spaces, and the brain parenchyma. Fibrinoi

Corynosoma strumosum (Acanthocephala) infection in marine foraging mink (Neogale vison) and river otter (Lontra canadensis) and associated peritonitis in a juvenile mink.

Corynosoma strumosum (Acanthocephala), a widespread parasite of pinnipeds, is reported in marine foraging North American mink (Neogale vison) and river otter (Lontra canadensis) on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This is the first confirmed case of infection by C. strumosum in river otters on the west coast of North America and may be the first confirmed case of infection in wild North American mink; C. strumosum has previously been reported in river otters in Europe (Lutra lutra) and in farmed mink fed with marine fish. We also detected a case of acanthocephalan associated peritonitis in

Spike destabilization attenuates Mink Cluster 5 SARS-CoV-2.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has shown the capacity to infect a wide range of nonhuman hosts, including farmed mink. In early 2020, a mink-associated variant, termed mink cluster 5 (MC5V), emerged in Denmark and spread to mink farmers and their household contacts but failed to cause a sustained outbreak and eventually disappeared. Here, we demonstrate that the spike protein (S) of MC5V is intrinsically unstable and impaired in processing, leading to markedly attenuated infectivity and fusogenicity. Remarkably, these defects are
