Tissue utilization at the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank.

The purpose of this study was to examine the utilization of corneas procured by the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank to determine why corneas were excluded from transplantation and to identify methods to safely increase the number of tissues made available for transplantation. We performed a retrospective review of the eye bank charts of 2,382 corneas evaluated by the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank between December 1, 1992 and November 30, 1993. During that time 748 corneas (31%) were made available for transplantation; 1,597 (67%) were directed toward research or training. Thirty-seven corneas (1.5%) wer

Pityriasis rosea in Rochester, Minnesota, 1969 to 1978.

A population-based epidemiologic study of pityriasis rosea was developed for Rochester, MN, for a recent 10-year period. Nine hundred thirty-nine patients with pityriasis rosea (340 male patients and 599 female patients) who resided within Rochester city limits at the time the diagnosis was made were included. The average annual incidence rate of this disease was 172.2 per 100,000 person-years (158.9 per 100,000, adjusted to the 1970 U.S. white population). Female patients predominated by a margin of 1.5:1.0. More than 75% of the patients were between the ages of 10 and 35 years, with a mean a

First Report of Ditylenchus dipsaci on Garlic in Minnesota.

In the summer of 2011, two independent garlic samples from Morrison and Dakota counties and in 2012 one garlic sample from Carver county in Minnesota were submitted by commercial growers to the University of Minnesota Plant Disease Clinic for disease analyses. Symptoms of the above-ground plant parts were stunting and chlorosis. Symptoms of bulbs were necrosis, underdevelopment, and distortion. Upon microscopic examination, phytonematodes exuded into the surrounding water droplet. Nematodes were present in the protective leaves, abscission zone, and cloves in all submitted bulbs (n = 18) for a

Characteristics of mercury speciation in Minnesota rivers and streams.

Patterns of mercury (Hg) speciation were examined in four Minnesota streams ranging from the main-stem Mississippi River to small tributaries in the basin. Filtered phase concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic Hg (IHg), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were higher in all streams during a major summertime runoff event, and DOC was enriched with MeHg but not with IHg. Particulate-phase MeHg and IHg concentrations generally increased with total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations but the event data did not diverge greatly from the non-event data, suggesting that sources of suspende

Cryptosporidiosis outbreak in a recreational swimming pool in Minnesota.

On May 6, 1998, the Olmsted County Public Health Department initiated an investigation into an outbreak of diarrheal illness that had occurred among people who swam frequently at a local swimming pool. Interviews of swimmers and microbiological testing of stool samples and swimming pool filter material were conducted to determine the source of the outbreak. Twenty-six of 206 swimmers interviewed had illnesses that met the case definition. The most common symptoms were diarrhea (100 percent), abdominal cramps (81 percent), and nausea (77 percent). The median duration of symptoms was nine days.

The impact of foodborne calicivirus disease: the Minnesota experience.

The first outbreaks of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis in Minnesota were confirmed in 1982. Since then, Norwalk-like caliciviruses have been recognized to be the most common cause of foodborne disease outbreaks, accounting for 41% of all confirmed foodborne outbreaks in Minnesota from 1981-1998. Although laboratory confirmation of caliciviruses in stool samples was not attempted in most of these outbreaks, all conformed to epidemiologic criteria for defining outbreaks of Norwalk virus. Since 1996, the availability of polymerase chain reaction testing at the Minnesota Department of Health has all

The incidence and prevalence of myoclonus in Olmsted County, Minnesota.

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence and prevalence of diagnosed myoclonus in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Little is known about the frequency and distribution of myoclonus in the general population. DESIGN: Descriptive study with case ascertainment through a records-linkage system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used a medical records-linkage system to identify all subjects whose records contained documentation of myoclonus or of diseases known to exhibit myoclonus. The records of all potential patients were reviewed by a neurologist, and only patients with pathologic and persistent myoclonus were inc

Epidemiology of focal and generalized dystonia in Rochester, Minnesota.

The epidemiology of generalized and focal dystonias was investigated in the Rochester, Minnesota, population over the period 1950-1982. The crude incidence of generalized dystonia was 2 per million persons per year, and for all focal dystonias combined, 24 per million per year. The crude prevalence rate was 34 per million persons for generalized dystonia and 295 per million persons for all focal dystonias. Torticollis was the most common focal dystonia; essential blepharospasm, oromandibular dystonia, spasmodic dysphonia, and writer's cramp were less common and had roughly equal incidence and

Renal transplantation at the University of Minnesota during the 1980s.

1. There have been 1,225 renal allografts performed at the University of Minnesota between January 1, 1980 and May 31, 1987. Significant risk factors for graft survival include donor type, retransplantation, and age at time of transplant. In addition, diabetes is a significant risk factor in patient survival. 2. Three immunosuppressive regimens have been used during this time period: AZA + P + ALG, CsA + P, and CsA + AZA + P (+ ALG for CAD grafts). The 3 protocols have been received by 411, 205, and 356 primary renal allograft recipients, respectively. No overall differences between the therap

Cancer patterns in Hmong in Minnesota, 2000 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Minnesota has the second largest Hmong population in the United States. The objective of the current study was to estimate the cancer incidence among Hmong individuals in Minnesota between 2000 and 2012 to determine targets for screening and interventions. METHODS: Cancer cases in Minnesota between 2000 and 2012 were obtained from the Minnesota Cancer Surveillance System, and proportional incidence ratios (PIRs) were calculated. The 2000 and 2010 US Census reports were used to obtain total population estimates. Age-adjusted cancer incidence rates (AAR) and 95% confidence intervals

With the loyal support of the chair of Surgery, Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen, the University of Minnesota cardiac surgery program led the way at the dawn of cardiac surgery when Dr F. John Lewis performed the first open heart surgery in the world using hypothermia while repairing an atrial septal defect on September 2, 1952. Soon after, Dr C. Walt Lillehei performed the first repair of a ventriculoseptal defect in the world using cross-circulation on March 26, 1954. Collaborating with Dr Richard DeWall in 1955, they developed the DeWall-Lillehei bubble oxygentor which was used at the University of

The epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in Minnesota: current trends.

The epidemic of HIV infection and HIV/AIDS in Minnesota reflects national trends in transmission and progression to disease. Analysis of Minnesota's data also highlights populations that are at much greater risk for HIV infection and progression to AIDS. Although men who have sex with men continue to comprise the majority of people in Minnesota with HIV, other subpopulations--women, people of color, and foreign-born residents--are seeing a rise in their infection rates as well. Members of these groups tend to be diagnosed later and, thus, are at greater risk for their infection to progress to

A retrospective study on poult enteritis syndrome in Minnesota.

A retrospective study was conducted to determine the occurrence of poult enteritis syndrome (PES) in Minnesota from January 2002 to December 2007. PES is an infectious intestinal disease of young turkeys between 1 day and 7 wk of age and is characterized by diarrhea, depression, and lethargy with pale intestines and/or excessively fluid cecal contents. During the study period, samples from 1736 turkey flocks were submitted to the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for disease investigation. Of these, 151 flocks (8.7%) were PES positive. Cases of PES were seen throughout the year with h

Parental and infant characteristics and childhood leukemia in Minnesota.

BACKGROUND: Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer. With the exception of Down syndrome, prenatal radiation exposure, and higher birth weight, particularly for acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL), few risk factors have been firmly established. Translocations present in neonatal blood spots and the young age peak of diagnosis suggest that early-life factors are involved in childhood leukemia etiology. METHODS: We investigated the association between birth characteristics and childhood leukemia through linkage of the Minnesota birth and cancer registries using a case-cohort study design. Cases

An epidemiologic summary of the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Minnesota.

A cumulative total of 3,202 AIDS cases and 2,355 non-AIDS cases of HIV infection have been diagnosed in Minnesota and reported to the Minnesota Department of Health since 1982. The number of AIDS cases and HIV infection cases diagnosed annually peaked five to 10 years ago. New treatments for HIV infection have led to a marked reduction in mortality. The number of deaths due to AIDS/HIV in 1997 (76) was the lowest number in Minnesota since 1986. Several trends continue to evolve in reported AIDS/HIV cases. First, the proportion of female cases has increased over time. Second, male-to-male sex r

Otosclerosis: the University of Minnesota temporal bone collection.

A study of 1452 human temporal bones revealed a previously unpublished material of 144 bones with otosclerosis. After exclusion of infants and individuals of races other than white, the incidence of otosclerosis was 12.75%. Of the bones with otosclerosis, 56.1% belonged to men and 43.9% to women. The incidence of clinical and histologic otosclerosis was practically the same for men (44.7% to 55.3%) as for women (47% to 53%). However, the incidence of bilateral otosclerosis was higher in women (88.9%) than in men (65.2%). Bilateral otosclerosis was present in 75.6%, whereas it was unilateral in

An outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in central Minnesota.

The only confirmed outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in the continental United States during 1982 occurred in Brainerd, Minnesota. The disease first appeared in a 27-year-old woman during a trip to Tahiti. The patient's two daughters (8 months old and 3 years old) developed mild conjunctivitis two days later. Although the symptoms of all three had completely resolved before they arrived in Brainerd, illness compatible with acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis developed in five other individuals who shared a house with them there. Symptoms appeared within two days in four of the five and
