The persistence of American Indian health disparities.

Disparities in health status between American Indians and other groups in the United States have persisted throughout the 500 years since Europeans arrived in the Americas. Colonists, traders, missionaries, soldiers, physicians, and government officials have struggled to explain these disparities, invoking a wide range of possible causes. American Indians joined these debates, often suggesting different explanations. Europeans and Americans also struggled to respond to the disparities, sometimes working to relieve them, sometimes taking advantage of the ill health of American Indians. Economic

Reconsideration of Dr. Allen's Report about Hemoptysis Patients from High Prevalence of Archaeoparasitological Paragonimiasis in Korea.

Horace N. Allen, an American physician, was a Presbyterian missionary to Korea. In 1886, he wrote the annual report of the Korean government hospital, summarizing patient statistics according to outpatient and inpatient classification for the first ever in Korean history. In the report, he speculated that hemoptysis cases of outpatient might have been mainly caused by distoma. Allen's conjecture was noteworthy because only a few years lapsed since the first scientific report of paragonimiasis. However, he was not sure of his assumption either because it was not evidently supported by proper mi

A case of hyper-reactive malarial splenomegaly. The role of rapid antigen-detecting and PCR-based tests.

Hyper-reactive malarial splenomegaly (HMS) - originally referred to as tropical splenomegaly syndrome - is characterized by a massive splenomegaly, high titres of anti-malarial antibodies and polyclonal IgM hypergammaglobulinemia. It is believed to be a consequence of an aberrant immunological response to prolonged exposure to malarial parasites. Although it is a frequent disease in the tropics, it is infrequent in western countries and is only seen in long-term residents from endemic areas. We describe the case of a 67-year-old Spanish man, a missionary in Cameroon for 30 years, who presented

[Canton Hospital and public health in Canton].

Canton Hospital was not only the most influential missionary hospital in South China, but also the first one brought the concept and practice of public health to Guangzhou. In the late Qing Dynasty, it conducted free vaccination, plague treatment, health education and so on, demonstrating the importance of public health to the people. In the period of the Republic of China, it extensively cooperated with the government and social organizations in developing school health, maternal and child health, communicable disease control and epidemiological investigations to actively serve the social gro

[An outline of spreading of Western mediciine into Yantai in modern age].

At the turn of the last century, side by side with the infiltration of religious culture from Western countries, western medicine spread into Yantai. The religious force, headed by American Presbyterian Mission, carried out charitable activities in the process of preaching and laid down the foundation for western medicine rooted in Yantai by establishing schools, education and training followers. They cultivated local physicians by first setting up clinics which had later transformed into hospitals. These are their major measures for building bases for spreading Christianity by foreigners. The Figure of the Staggering Rat: Reading Colonial Outbreak Narratives Against the Grain of "Virus Hunting".

The image of dazed, plague-infected rats coming out of their nests and performing a pirouette in front of the surprised eyes of humans before dying is one well-known to us through Albert Camus's The Plague (1947). This article examines the historical roots of this image and its emergence in French missionary narratives about plague outbreaks in the Chinese province of Yunnan in the 1870s on the eve of the Third Plague Pandemic. Showing that accounts of the "staggering rat" were not meant as naturalist observations of a zoonotic disease, as is generally assumed by historians, but as a cosmologi

Lassa fever in Onitsha, East Central State, Nigeria in 1974.

Three cases of Lassa fever occurred in Onitsha, East Central State, Nigeria, in January and February 1974. The first case was a 19-year-old Nigerian; the other 2 cases were German missionary physicians at St Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha, one of whom cared for the patient who was the first case. Thus, 2 of the 3 cases were hospital acquired. Investigations failed to discover a village outbreak or the source of virus for the first case. A serosurvey of 258 hospital staff members and contacts of the 3 cases showed no other persons with antibody to Lassa virus. The absence of Lassa virus ant

Modern Japanese medical history and the European influence.

Before the first European visited Japan in 1549, traditional Chinese medicine was mainly employed in Japan. Francisco de Xavier, a missionary of the Society of Jesus, tried to promote the introduction of Christianity by providing a medical service for Japanese citizens. However, Japan implemented a national isolation policy in 1639 and cut off diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, except Holland and China. For over 200 years, until the American admiral Matthew Perry forced Japan to open its doors in 1853, Japan learned about western medicine only from doctors of the Dutch merchants'

Neurasthenia at Mengo Hospital, Uganda: A case study in psychiatry and a diagnosis, 1906-50.

This article uses a case-study approach to examine the complex and contradictory nature of diagnoses like neurasthenia in colonial Africa. Drawing on the case notes of European and African patients diagnosed with neurasthenia at the Church Missionary Society's Mengo Hospital, Uganda, it argues that in practice, and outside the colonial asylum in particular, ideas about race and mental illness were more nuanced than histories of psychiatry and empire might imply. At Mengo, the tales of pain and suffering recorded by the doctors remind us that there is more to the history of neurasthenia than co

Denis Parsons Burkitt, FRSM, FRCS (Edinburgh): a passion for learning.

Dennis Parsons Burkitt was an accomplished Irish surgeon who was headed for a life of luxury. However, he opted for a more meaningful calling and pursued missionary work in Africa instead. While there, he came across an extraordinary pediatric jaw tumor that was not only disfiguring, but also rapidly fatal. Despite the futility of surgery, he became captivated with studying this unrecognized malignancy and conducted what is considered to be one of the most formidable epidemiologic investigations in the history of cancer research by surveying the entire continent. Without any formal training in

Can protracted relapsing fever resemble Lyme disease?

We report the case of a Protestant missionary who contracted tick-borne relapsing fever in 1979 while serving in the Sudan. Despite tetracycline treatment, his acute illness ran a protracted course, with migratory polyarthralgias lasting approximately 10 months. Symptoms recurred in 1984 and have persisted. At regular intervals, the patient has experienced recurrent episodes of fever, generalized fatigue, bilateral upper and lower extremity muscle weakness, and asymetric large joint polyarthralgia. Indirect fluorescent antibody testing of sera demonstrated titers of 1:16 for B. burgdorferi and

[Monkey pox virus infection in humans in the Central African Republic].

A human monkeypox outbreak is reported which occurred in January 1984 in the extreme south-west areas of the Central African Republic. Six persons were found to be affected in a Pygmy camp with an estimated population of 50 residents. In the two affected families, out of 11 members, only unvaccinated children and a 22 year old unvaccinated woman contracted the disease. The disease was of moderate severity in two patients and very mild in the other four. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by virus isolation from skin lesions of 4 patients and by sero-immunologic tests in all of them. The clin

Subcutaneous nodules as a manifestation of onchocerciasis. A rare condition in the United States.

Although infection with tissue nematodes is a significant health problem in many parts of the world, such cases are unusual in the continental United States. This report describes a case of Onchocerca volvulus infection, acquired by a 38-year-old female missionary in northern Brazil, that manifested as subcutaneous nodules in the groin and flank two years after the patient's return to the United States. A year previously, a wrong diagnosis of Wuchereria bancrofti was made at biopsy. At that time, treatment with diethylcarbamazine citrate had to be discontinued because of intense pruritus. Exam

Multi-Pathogen Innovative (5 in 1) Vaccine for Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers will Save More Lives.

Mankind has developed strategies to mitigate calamitous pandemics, by using vaccines. Eradication of some diseases was successful through usage of vaccines. Lassa, Yellow, Crimean-Congo, Marburg and Ebola viruses need special attention. Lassa fever, that now has a candidate vaccine, was discovered in 1969 when two missionary nurses died in Nigeria, while Yellow fever has a vaccine from its 17D attenuated strain. Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a widespread tick-borne viral disease, and the nucleoprotein and glycoproteins are identified for inclusion in a vaccine. Marburg virus is highly pa

Magnetic resonance imaging of sexual intercourse: initial experience.

The objective of this study was to investigate sexual intercourse with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A volunteer couple (30 year-old male, 27-year-old female) with a normal sex life, had face-to-face sexual intercourse (reversed missionary position) under MRI. Static and dynamic T2-weighted sagittal sequencies were acquired on the midline before and during vaginal penetration. In this position, before penetration, the vagina was parallel to the pubococcygeal line and had normal anterior convexity. After penetration, accentuation of the vaginal convexity was observed, produced by the penile

The Study on the Lives and Health Conditions of Internees in Santo Thomas Camp of Philippines - Based on McAnlis's The War in Manila (1941-1945).

When Japan invaded the Philippines, two missionary dentists (Dr. McAnlis and Dr. Boots) who were forced to leave Korea were captured and interned in the Santo Thomas camp in Manila. Japan continued to bombard and plunder the Philippines in the wake of the Pacific War following the Great East Asia policy, leading to serious inflation and material deficiency. More than 4,000 Allied citizens held in Santo Thomas camp without basic food and shelter. Santo Thomas Camp was equipped with the systems of the Japanese military medical officers and Western doctors of captivity based on the Geneva Convent

[A missing name in the history of chagasic megaesophagus: Joseph Cooper Reinhardt (1809/10-1873)].

The book entitled "Brazil and the Brasilians", written by the Reverends Kidder and Fletcher and firstly published in the United States in 1857, reports the travels of these two missionaries throughout Brazil and includes a section entitled "A new disease". This section contains data regarding the clinical picture, the natural history and the epidemiology of a commom disease in Brazilian hinterland, which was known as "mal de engasgo". These informations were collected in 1855 by Rev. Fletcher from an anonymous North American physician, who worked in Limeira, State of São Paulo, and is called i
