Chancroid detected by polymerase chain reaction--Jackson, Mississippi, 1994-1995.

Chancroid is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by infection with Haemophilus ducreyi and is characterized by genital ulceration. Chancroid is underreported in the United States (1), reflecting, in part, difficulties in diagnosis because of clinical similarities between chancroid and other ulcerative STDs. In addition, laboratory confirmation by culture is 53%-84% sensitive and often is unavailable in clinical settings (2). In September 1994, clinicians at the District V STD clinic of the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) in Jackson reported examining patients with genital

Zoonotic Baylisascaris procyonis Infection in Raccoons, Mississippi, USA, 2023-2024.

Baylisascaris procyonis, an emerging zoonotic parasite, causes clinically significant visceral, ophthalmologic, and neurologic disease in humans. We screened raccoons (n = 46) collected from central and southern Mississippi for B. procyonis by necropsy (13.0% prevalence) and droplet digital PCR of feces (26.7% prevalence). Further surveillance to determine raccoon infection rates throughout Mississippi is indicated.

Trends of Foodborne Diseases in Mississippi: Association with Racial and Economic Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Foodborne diseases are a major source of concern in USA. These diseases are a burden on public health and significantly contribute to the cost of health care. There is an urgent need to understand the contributing factors for such outbreaks, especially in Mississippi (MS), an agricultural state with low socioeconomic status. METHODS: Secondary data for the current study were obtained from the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Epidemiology department for the study period 2010-2018. Data were for individuals with reported foodborne diseases cases. The data were analyzed

Adult non-cardiac ECMO for the treatment of ARDS--the Mississippi experience.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has become a center for ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), providing this service to patients requiring this life-saving modality. UMMC is the only ECMO center in the state. Prior to the cases presented, ECMO use at UMMC has been limited to neonates and the pediatric patient population as well as by the cardiothoracic service for patients with cardiac failure or inability to wean from bypass. The use of ECMO for non-cardiac support in the adult population has been limited in the past, but recent reports in the literature and experien

Successful treatment of a radioulnar synostosis in a Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis).

A Mississippi kite (Ictinia mississippiensis) was presented to the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana, School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State University, for an inability to fly and was subsequently diagnosed with a minimally displaced, closed, simple, short oblique, diaphyseal fracture of the distal third of the right ulna. A figure-8 bandage was initially applied to the wing to stabilize the fracture. Over a 5-week period, the kite developed progressive reduction in wing extension, and serial radiographs revealed a bridging callus at the ulnar fracture site, as well as development of a r

Seasonal pattern of inhibition of Ostertagia ostertagi in calves in northeast Mississippi.

The composition of, and seasonal changes in, populations of gastrointestinal parasites of calves in northeast Mississippi were determined for 10 months post-weaning. After weaning on 15 October, 20 mixed breed beef steers were grazed together on a 4 ha fescue/bermudagrass pasture. From November through August of the following year, two of the calves were removed each month for necropsy and counting of gastrointestinal nematodes. Eight species of worms were found: Haemonchus placei, Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei, Bunostomum phlebotomum, Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus colubriformi

Catabolism of 5-chlorosalicylate by a Bacillus isolated from the Mississippi River.

A strain of Bacillus brevis isolated from a polluted section of the Mississippi River was shown to utilize 5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzoate (5-chlorosalicylate) as a sale source of carbon and energy. Enzymic analyses of cell-free extracts prepared from 5-chlorosalicylate-grown cells demonstrated that the initial step in the pathway involved cleavage of the aromatic ring between C1 and C2 by a specific 5-chlorosalicylate 1,2-dioxygenase. Loss of chloride from the growth substrate occurred after ring fission and was probably enzyme mediated. An intermediate chlorolactone apparently lost chloride by en

Famished for Freedom: Pellagra and Medical Clemency at the Mississippi State Penitentiary.

This paper provides a case study of one medical experiment conducted in 1915 by the United States Public Health Service in collaboration with the Mississippi State Penitentiary. The experiment was non-therapeutic and its objective was to induce pellagra (a vitamin deficiency disease) in twelve healthy White male prisoners to confirm its etiology. Extant archival records produced by the convict participants, state politicians, and health researchers underscore that the men selected for the pellagra experiment were unique among incarcerated people in Mississippi at the time: they were White, wea

Variability in the discharge of the Mississippi River and tributaries from 1817 to 2020.

There are conflicting predictions of climate change effects and landuse on the discharge of the Mississippi River-the largest river in North America. Are discharges becoming higher or lower, and if they did change, then when? To address these uncertainties I compiled a two-hundred-year long dataset of the annual average, minimum, and maximum discharges at five stations draining the Mississippi River watershed: at Clinton, IA, Herman, MO, St. Louis, MO, Louisville, KY, and Vicksburg, MS. A spline/Lowess analysis tested for trends and inflection points. All three discharge metrics increased, and

Syphilis and HIV Co-infection in Mississippi: Implications for Control and Prevention.

Syphilis and HIV are important public health issues in the United States, especially in the southeastern region. This study aimed to determine and describe the co-infection pattern in Mississippi by using a case-controlled design to analyze cases diagnosed with syphilis or HIV from 2007 to 2016. Direct matching was employed to identify cases that were co-infected during the same calendar year, and binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine predictors of co-infection. Results showed that 1736 (34.0%) of syphilis and HIV cases were co-infected during the same calendar year. Binary

Childhood vaccination requirements: Lessons from history, Mississippi, and a path forward.

Mississippi consistently leads the United States in childhood vaccination with a greater than 99% measles-mumps-rubella vaccination rate for children entering kindergarten. The story of how this came to pass in a state that lags behind on nearly every other public health measure is pertinent given the recent outbreaks of measles in the United States, especially in pockets of the country where there is strong resistance to vaccination. The fight against compulsory vaccination law is centuries old and the enduring success of Mississippi at repelling challenges to their vaccination requirements i

Lead in Drinking Water and Child Health: Evidence From Jackson, Mississippi.

This paper quantifies the impact of prenatal exposure to lead in drinking water on infant health at birth by exploiting a quasi-experiment in Jackson, Mississippi. This setting provides a unique context where behavioral changes to avoid lead-contaminated water are limited due to delayed water testing and dissemination of information about lead contamination. We apply synthetic control using other US cities and Mississippi counties as donors to identify the effect of lead exposure on birth outcomes. We find that prenatal lead exposure in Jackson increased the incidence of low birth weight by ap

HIV risk perception and PrEP uptake among black MSM in Mississippi.

INTRODUCTION: Rates for HIV are disproportionately higher for Black men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to other MSM in the U.S. While there is evidence that low perceived risk of HIV infection may increase HIV vulnerability, few studies have examined this relationship among Black MSM in the Southern U.S. where the HIV rates are the highest in the country. This study examined the association between perceived HIV risk and PrEP adoption among Black MSM in a medium-size city in Mississippi. METHODS: Data were drawn from a subsample of the "ACCELERATE!" intervention, an innovative and susta

Lung Cancer Diagnosis Rates in Early Detection Programs in the Mississippi Delta.

IMPORTANCE: Estimates of the impact of lung cancer screening (LCS) largely rely on the 3.97% lung cancer diagnosis rate (LCDR) from the National Lung Screening Trial. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the LCDR in clinical LCS and incidental pulmonary nodule (IPN) programs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study of a large regional community health care system in the Mississippi Delta included patients who had at least 1 low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan for lung cancer or any CT scan finding an IPN diameter of 30 mm or less and no prior history of lung cancer between Janu

Online grocery purchasing in Mississippi: associations with broadband, rurality, and household characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the sociodemographic, economic, and area characteristics associated with Online Grocery Purchasing (OGP) use among adult residents of Mississippi. Understanding these factors is important in a largely rural and low-income state to address barriers and enhance accessibility. METHODS: Data were collected from a 2022 online pilot survey (n = 398) and secondary sources. A logistic regression model was used to analyze associations between self-reported OGP use and factors including local broadband quality, sociodemographic and economic characteristics, the loc
