Reducing Malignant Ascites and Long-Term Survival in a Patient with Recurrent Gastric Cancer Treated with a Combination of Docetaxel and Mistletoe Extract.

Recurrent gastric cancer with peritoneal seeding is associated with poor overall survival. A 71-year-old man with advanced gastric cancer underwent radical total gastrectomy (stage IIIb, T4b N1 M0). Abdomino-pelvic computed tomography performed 7 months after surgery revealed increased ascites with enhanced peritoneal thickening. He was diagnosed with peritoneal seeding and received second-line chemotherapy (irinotecan). However, he refused chemotherapy due to the side effects (general weakness, nausea, and vomiting) after 1 cycle. He started receiving alternative therapy with Viscum album ext

In vitro analysis of quercetin-like compounds from mistletoe Dendrophthoe pentandra (L.) Miq as a potential antiviral agent for Newcastle disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that some flavonoid compounds obtained from crude methanol extract of mistletoe leaves ( Dendrophthoe pentandra L. Miq), also known as Benalu Duku (BD), have antimicrobial effects. Thus, the plant has the potential to eliminate viruses that may cause outbreaks in chicken farms. This study aimed to prove the in vitro ability of flavonoid compounds, namely quercetin-like compounds (QLCs), to eliminate field viruses, specifically the Newcastle disease virus (NDV). METHODS: This research was performed in two stages. An in vitro test was used with a post-test o

Host defense responses of mesquite (Prosopis laevigata, Fabaceae) trees against the mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus, Loranthaceae) during the early stage of infection.

Mesquite (Prosopis laevigata, Fabaceae) is a legume widely distributed in Mexico and infested by the mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus, Loranthaceae), a parasitic plant that absorbs water and nutrients from the mesquite. For parasitism to become established, the mistletoe must evade host defenses. To date, these defenses have only been studied in hosts with advanced parasitic infestations, but the initial defense of mesquite against these infestations remains unknown. The objective of this work was to investigate the early stress responses of mesquite trees after the first physical contact

The immunomodulatory beta-galactoside-specific lectin from mistletoe: partial sequence analysis, cell and tissue binding, and impact on intracellular biosignalling of monocytic leukemia cells.

Nanogram quantities of the beta-galactoside-specific lectin from mistletoe (ML-I) that is composed of two different types of subunits exhibit immunomodulatory potency and enhance cytokine secretion in vitro and in vivo. Partial sequence analysis of the carbohydrate-binding B chain revealed a ragged N-terminus and overall homologies to the B subunit of Ricin D and Ricin E. Two evolutionarily neutral substitutions were apparent in the otherwise identical N-terminal sequences of the two toxic chains within the lectin preparation. On the basis of the influence of chemical modification by group-spe
