How were medical students from Christchurch, New Zealand, involved in their COVID-19 response?

Medical students from the University of Otago, Christchurch Department of Medicine were involved in their local COVID-19 response. A group of ten students helped with the assessment of individuals at community-based assessment centres or mobile testing units. They primarily helped assess and test individuals alongside experienced healthcare workers. The students gained valuable clinical and public health experience. Key learning points were the risks of pandemic involvement, identifying local barriers to healthcare and developing an appreciation for an evolving health response. Overall, studen

Involving Older Adults in the Technology Design Process: A Case Study on Mobility and Wellbeing in the Built Environment.

Older adults benefit from unstructured, lifestyle-based activity that can be carried out in people's houses, neighbourhoods, and the built environment. Technological solutions may support physical activity and encourage wellbeing. To ensure such technology is suitable for, and usable by, older adults, it is crucial they are involved in all stages of design. Participatory design methodologies facilitate collaboration and engagement with potential users. We examine the suitability of participatory design for collaborating and engaging with older adults. Participatory design workshops were conduc

Mobile Response and Stabilization Services.

Mobile Response and Stabilization Services (MRSS) play a key role in the children's behavioral health system, providing a home-based and community-based response to children experiencing a behavioral health crisis. This article reviews the role of MRSS and best practices for the model based on national guidelines and outcomes from several communities implementing MRSS. Performance metrics and outcomes are shared from Connecticut's Mobile Crisis Intervention Services, a prominent MRSS model.

Making endoscopy mobile: the journey.

In spite of the economic development through the past six decades post-independence, nearly 70% of the Indian population still live in villages, and these people very often have limited access to the advanced health-care technology. In an attempt to render cost-effective gastrointestinal care to the rural dwellers, we have initiated a Rural Health Care Project. We have tailor-made and converted a bus into a mobile hospital equipped with basic diagnostic facilities including a custom-made endoscopy unit. This bus travels to rural areas and renders basic diagnostic and therapeutic services inclu

Experienced economic segregation and associated mental health inequalities across urbanicity.

The global mental health burden is rising, with economic segregation as a key social determinant contributing to mental health and its inequalities. However, most studies rely on residential-based segregation measures failing to capture the actual segregation individuals experience through daily mobility and activities. Using a large-scale mobility dataset across the contiguous United States, we quantify mobility-based economic segregation and examine its associations with mental health outcomes across income groups and urbanicity levels. We find that individuals in the lowest and highest inco

A mobility program for an inpatient acute care medical unit.

For many patients, hospitalization brings prolonged periods of bed rest, which are associated with such adverse health outcomes as increased length of stay, increased risk of falls, functional decline, and extended-care facility placement. Most studies of progressive or early mobility protocols designed to minimize these adverse effects have been geared toward specific patient populations and conducted by multidisciplinary teams in either ICUs or surgical units. Very few mobility programs have been developed for and implemented on acute care medical units. This evidence-based quality improveme

The Gradual Establishment and Historical Implications of Hospital Ship Mobile Medical Services along Korea's Western and Southern Coasts in the 1960s-1970s.

The term muui (doctorless) refers to a state of absolute deprivation of medical care. In modern Korean history, chronic shortages and regional disparities of medical resources resulted in the widespread existence of muuichon (doctorless village). In response, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs implemented a series of policies and initiatives, including the establishment of a public health center system and the mobilization of public doctors. Yet the very term muuichon also suggested that the problem of public health was inseparable from that of space. Above all, there was a distinct spa

Coexistence of tmexCD-toprJ, blaNDM-1, and blaIMP-4 in One Plasmid Carried by Clinical Klebsiella spp.

In clinical practice, carbapenems and tigecycline are considered significant options for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant Klebsiella spp. The continual evolution of resistance mechanisms to carbapenems and tigecycline is shattering the present condition. Meanwhile, convergence of the two resistance mechanisms in a single strain has been reported repeatedly, posing a significant threat to public health and safety. In this study, two carbapenem- and tigecycline-resistant Klebsiella species were obtained from patients and investigated using antimicrobial susceptibility testing, c
