Prebiotic Maltose Gel Can Promote the Vaginal Microbiota From BV-Related Bacteria Dominant to Lactobacillus in Rhesus Macaque.

The high incidence of bacterial vaginosis recurrence is common after treatment with an antibiotic agent and suggests the need for new treatments to prevent this. We conducted a randomized trial to evaluate the ability of maltose gel to treat bacterial vaginosis. Eighteen female rhesus macaques were randomly assigned, in a 2:1 ratio, to receive maltose gel or placebo gel by syringe to the fornix of the vagina for five consecutive days. We used 16S rRNA sequencing data from 70 swab samples of vaginal secretions in two groups in total on days 0, 3, and 5 after medication initiation and days 3 and

Bacterial vaginosis a "broad overview".

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) was first reported in 1995 by Gardner and Dukes, who described the unique clinical signs and symptoms and the distinctive nature of the vaginal discharge associated with it. They also described a "new" causative organism, which they named "Haemophilus vaginalis", subsequently renamed Gardnerella vaginalis. BV is currently the most prevalent cause of infectious vaginitis among women attending for genitourinary diseases. BV has a complex microbiology. Lactobacillus populations, which are usually dominant in healthy women, are replaced by a polymicrobial group of organism

Microbiological findings in subjects with asymptomatic oral lichen planus: a cross-sectional comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial colonization of the oral mucosa was evaluated in patients with asymptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP) and compared to the microbiologic status in mucosally healthy subjects. METHODS: Bacteria from patients with clinically and histopathologically diagnosed OLP from the Stomatology Service, Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, were collected with a non-invasive swab system. Samples were taken from OLP lesions on the gingiva and from non-affected sites on the contralateral side of the mouth. The control population did

Activity of pefloxacin and thirteen other antimicrobial agents in vitro against isolates from hospital and genitourinary infections.

The in-vitro activity of the quinolone derivative pefloxacin was compared with that of three other quinolones, five beta-lactam antibiotics and three aminoglycosides against 367 isolates from hospital patients and from out-patients with genitourinary infections. MIC90 of pefloxacin and norfloxacin for each strain was the same; that of ciprofloxacin was a little lower. All strains except Escherichia coli were resistant to nalidixic acid. Pefloxacin was highly active against Staphylococcus aureus (39 strains; MIC90 1.0 mg/l) and most strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (56; 4 mg/l), Esch

Penile Microbiota and Female Partner Bacterial Vaginosis in Rakai, Uganda.

UNLABELLED: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal bacterial imbalance associated with risk for HIV and poor gynecologic and obstetric outcomes. Male circumcision reduces BV-associated bacteria on the penis and decreases BV in female partners, but the link between penile microbiota and female partner BV is not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that having a female partner with BV increases BV-associated bacteria in uncircumcised men. We characterized penile microbiota composition and density (i.e., the quantity of bacteria per swab) by broad-coverage 16S rRNA gene-based sequencin

Decoding the microbial landscape of endometrial cancer: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The human microbiome plays an emerging role in cancer biology, yet its contribution to endometrial cancer (EC) remains poorly defined. This study investigates the microbial composition of the vaginal, rectal, and endometrial sites in women with and without EC, aiming to uncover microbial signatures associated with the disease. RESULTS: We performed shotgun metagenomic sequencing on vaginal, rectal, and endometrial samples from 25 patients with EC and 27 control women undergoing hysterectomy for benign conditions. Vaginal and rectal swabs were collected before surgery, while endomet

Distinguishing tuberculosis from non-tuberculous mycobacteria and other respiratory conditions by microbiome patterns.

Tuberculosis (TB) and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections, both caused by acid-fast bacteria, exhibit overlapping clinical presentations and radiological findings, making accurate and swift differentiation imperative for appropriate patient management. The ability to promptly distinguish between TB and NTM is pivotal, particularly in healthcare settings where TB patients require isolation. So, there is a pressing need to identify reliable biomarkers capable of delineating these conditions. In this study, we carefully analyzed a group of 108 patients, including 38 with TB, 29 with NT

Practical Guide to Diagnosing and Treating Vaginitis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV), candidiasis, and trichomoniasis account for more than 90% of vaginal infections. BV typically is associated with a decrease in commensal, protective lactobacilli and a proliferation of other flora. Mobiluncus is pathognomonic but found in only 20% of cases. Presence of 3 of 4 criteria indicates BV: a homogenous noninflammatory discharge (not many WBCs); pH >4.5; clue cells (bacteria attached to borders of epithelial cells, > 20 % of epithelial cells); and a positive whiff test. New intravaginal BV preparations cause less-adverse systemic effects than oral regimens. Tr

The complex vaginal flora of West African women with bacterial vaginosis.

BACKGROUND: The spectrum of bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV) has recently expanded through taxonomic changes and the use of molecular methods. These methods have yet to be used in large-scale epidemiological studies in Africa where BV is highly prevalent. METHODS: An analysis of samples obtained during a clinical trial of the management of vaginal discharge in four West African countries. Samples were available from 1555 participants; 843 (54%) had BV. Nucleic acids of 13 bacterial genera or species potentially associated with BV were detected through the polymerase chain rea

Associations of self-reported toothbrushing frequency with salivary microbiome in caries, fluorosis, and healthy subjects.

Toothbrushing is a fundamental oral hygiene behavior associated with differences in the composition of salivary microbiome, yet whether its relationship with microbial profiles differs across oral conditions remains unclear. In this study, 300 participants were initially enrolled, including healthy controls and patients with dental caries or dental fluorosis (100 per group). After exclusion of one fluorosis sample that failed sequencing, 299 unstimulated saliva samples were analyzed. Based on questionnaire data, participants were classified as high-frequency (≥ 2 times/day) or low-frequency (<

Implication of the Vaginal Microbiome in Female Infertility and Assisted Conception Outcomes.

The rise in infertility rates has prompted research into the impact of vaginal microbiota on female fertility and the success of assisted reproductive technology (ART). Our study aimed to compare the vaginal microbiome between fertile and infertile women and explore its influence on ART outcomes. Vaginal secretion samples were collected from 194 infertile women and 100 healthy controls at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital. The V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A machine learning model was applied to predict infertility based on genus-level abunda

Lactobacillus Genus Complex Probiotic-Induced Changes on the Equine Clitoral Microbiome.

Dysbiosis of the lower reproductive tract (LRT) in mares may play a role in clinical diseases, including endometritis and placentitis. Metagenomic/metagenetic analysis of bacterial DNA can identify organisms that are not readily cultured and, thus, may go undetected. In this study, we tested the following hypotheses: (1) the clitoris of estrual mares harbors a unique resident microbiome, (2) topical Lactobacillus genus complex (LGC)-containing probiotic will alter the equine clitoral microbiome, and (3) early pregnancy rates following clitoral LGC application will not differ significantly from

Evaluation of different culture media to support in vitro growth and biofilm formation of bacterial vaginosis-associated anaerobes.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the most common vaginal infections worldwide. It is associated with the presence of a dense polymicrobial biofilm on the vaginal epithelium, formed mainly by Gardnerella species. The biofilm also contains other anaerobic species, but little is known about their role in BV development. AIM: To evaluate the influence of different culture media on the planktonic and biofilm growth of six cultivable anaerobes frequently associated with BV, namely Gardnerella sp., Atopobium vaginae, Lactobacillus iners, Mobiluncus curtisii, Peptostreptococcus anaerobi

Distribution and mobility of the tetracycline resistance determinant tetQ.

We tested 34 American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) and 168 clinical bacterial isolates, from the human urogenital and oral tracts and streptococci isolated from cows with mastitis, for the presence of the tetQ gene using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and DNA-DNA hybridization. The identities of PCR products were confirmed by Southern blot hybridization of whole-cell DNA. Eleven of the ATCC strains were positive for tetQ, including five Bacteroides spp., five Prevotella spp. and a single isolate of Mitsuokella multiacidus. Twenty-eight (29%) of the 95 clinical Gram-negative isolates

Vaginal Carriage of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) in Pregnant Women, Antibiotic Sensitivity and Associated Risk Factors in Dakar, Senegal.

The eradication of neonatal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections, considered as a major public health priority, necessarily requires a mastery of the data on vaginal carriage in pregnant women. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of vaginal carriage of GBS in pregnant women, antibiotic susceptibility, and associated risk factors. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted over a period of 9 months (July 2020 to March 2021) in pregnant women between 34 and 38 weeks of gestation (WG) followed at the Nabil Choucair health center in Dakar. Vaginosis: Advances in new therapeutic development and microbiome restoration.

Vaginosis is a condition experienced by most women at least once in their lifetime. This condition arises due to the imbalance in the microbiome of the vaginal ecosystem. Most of the pathogens of this disease are organisms which are commonly found in a normal healthy vagina. The vaginal microbiome is important as they act as a primary defence against secondary infections and Sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs and STIs). The vagina is mostly dominated by Lactobacillus along with other microbes including Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae., Prevotella spp., Mobiluncus spp.,
