Imaging of congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders: What radiologist wants to know?

We aim to review the imaging features of congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders. Characteristic imaging findings can define subtypes of these disorders through assessment of cranial nerves, extraocular muscles, orbital, and brain abnormalities. Duane retraction syndrome shows absent or hypoplasic 6th cranial nerve and preserved extraocular muscles (EOM). Mobius syndrome shows absent 7th and 6th cranial nerves, absence of facial colliculus, flattening of the dorsal aspect of the pons, hypoplasia of the pons and medulla, and flattening of the 4th ventricular floor. Congenital fibrosis of th

Associated syndromes in patients with Pierre Robin Sequence.

OBJECTIVES: Classically, Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction, although frequently associated with cleft palate. Current literature reports that Stickler syndrome is the most common syndrome associated with PRS, and 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11 DS) as the second most common. This study identifies associations between PRS and genetic syndromes. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify patients diagnosed with PRS over a 10-year period from 4/1/2007 to 4/1/2017 at a tertiary children's hospital. RESULTS: 4,052 cons

Splenogonadal fusion: exceptional association with Moebius syndrome and intestinal intussusception.

We present an exceptional association of splenogonadal fusion, Moebius syndrome, and intestinal intussusception. At the age of 1 year, the patient presented with vomiting, bloody stools, and abdominal distension. He underwent a laparotomy that revealed an ileo-ileal intussusception. Three days later, he underwent a new surgery for the reduction of a suspected inguinal hernia. A dark-red tubular structure consisting of splenic tissue was seen passing down through the processus vaginalis and attaching onto the left testicle. Owing to the rarity of the splenogonadal fusion, each case should be re

Subclavian artery supply disruption sequence-Klippel-Feil and Mobius anomalies.

Fetal vascular disruptions can cause specific patterns of birth depending on the location, extent and timing of the disruptive event in the embryonic life. An example of this is subclavian artery supply disruption sequence occurring around 6 weeks of gestation which causes various combinations of Poland, Klippel-Feil and Mobius anomalies. A one-month-old child with features of all three anomalies along with other associated features is described here.

Fine mapping of the neurally expressed gene SOX14 to human 3q23, relative to three congenital diseases.

Members of the Sox gene family encode transcription factors that have diverse and important functions during development. We have recently described the cloning of chick and mouse Sox14 and the expression of these genes in a population of ventral interneurons in the embryonic spinal cord. We report here the cloning and sequencing of the human orthologue of Sox14. Human SOX14 shows remarkable sequence conservation compared with orthologues from other vertebrate species and probably mirrors the expression of these genes in the developing brain and spinal cord. Using radiation hybrid mapping and

Moebius Syndrome associated with syringomyelia: a case report.

Moebius Syndrome is a genetic condition that results in inability for facial mimicry due to palsy of cranial nerves VI and VII. Syringomyelia is characterized by a dilation of the central canal in the spinal cord, and is generally asymptomatic. Both disorders are diagnosed using imaging tests. A newborn with no facial movements upon physical examination was admitted to the delivery room of our hospital. A specialist confirmed the condition to be Moebius Syndrome. Further investigation using magnetic resonance imaging indicated that syringomyelia was associated with Moebius Syndrome. Given that

The Etiology of Moebius Syndrome-Making the Case for Animal Models.

Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a rare disease consisting of uni-/bilateral palsy of CN VI and VII without impairment of vertical eye movements. Its uncommon nature means that the etiology is still uncertain. It is thought to be caused by vascular lesions leading to infarction in the nuclei of cranial nerves VI and VII on the posterior aspect of the pons. However, several genes have also been discussed as possibly causative. We performed a literature search in the PUBMED database and on the Science Direct platform with terms related to the pathology and to each etiology individually. Included were o

Evaluation of Moebius syndrome with hand manifestations.

Moebius Syndrome (MS) is characterized by congenital paralysis of the 6th and 7th cranial nerves, sometimes combined with deficits in cranial nerves and with limb anomalies. We reported that identifying common upper extremity orthopedic manifestations of this syndrome would asist physicians who care for affected patients to promtly establish a dignosis and treatment plan. Our internal medical record system was queried and a keyword search for "Möbius/Moebius Syndrome" was conducted. The clinical data collected for each patient consisted of age at diagnosis, date of first and date of final foll

Examining the genetics of congenital facial paralysis--a closer look at Moebius syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: The molecular underpinnings of Moebius syndrome (MBS) are diverse. This article provides a comprehensive summation of the genetic and etiologic literature underlying this disorder. Elucidating the genetic causes of the disorder can aid in earlier detection and treatment planning. DESIGN: Articles from 1880-2013 were selected and reviewed by six researchers to understand all of the molecular theories and chronicity of advancements in the literature. RESULTS: Mutations in the MBS1, MBS2, and MBS3 gene loci all have contributed to the development of MBS through various pathways. HOX

Moebius syndrome with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection.

Moebius syndrome is characterized by congenital complete or partial facial nerve palsy with or without paralysis of cranial nerves and often associated with other malformations. Cardiac anomalies though known are very rare and till date only 4 cases have been reported. We present a case of Moebius syndrome with supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection which has not yet been reported in literature.

Prenatal diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome by multimodality fetal imaging.

We describe prenatal diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome using a combination of ultrasound and MRI. Poland syndrome was diagnosed based on absence of the pectoralis muscles associated with dextroposition of the fetal heart and elevation of the left diaphragm. Associated brain anomalies that led to the diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome, included ventriculomegaly, hypoplastic cerebellum, tectal beaking, and a peculiar flattening of the posterior aspect of the pons and medulla oblongata, which has been reported by postnatal diffusion tensor imaging studies as a reliable neuroimaging marker for

Poland-Möbius syndrome: a case report implicating a novel mutation of the PLXND1 gene and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Möbius (Moebius) and Poland's syndromes are two rare congenital syndromes characterized by non-progressive bilateral (and often asymmetric) dysfunction of the 6th and 7th cranial nerves and hypoplasia of the pectoral muscles associated with chest wall and upper limb anomalies respectively. Manifest simultaneously as Poland-Möbius (Poland-Moebius) syndrome, debate continues as to whether this is a distinct nosological entity or represents phenotypic variation as part of a spectrum of disorders of rhomboencephalic development. Etiological hypotheses implicate both genetic and environ

Poland-Möbius syndrome and disruption spectrum affecting the face and extremities: a review paper and presentation of five cases.

The author summarizes hitherto assembled experience with the clinical and genetic characteristics of Poland's and Möbius syndrome. Five selected case-records with this disease and the sequence of the Poland-Möbius syndrome are presented. Another case-record is devoted to an allied syndrome, hypoglossia-hypodactyly, found in a spontaneously aborted fetus. For establishment of a more accurate symptomatology, an irreplaceable place is held by anthropometric examination; for objectifying the asymmetry of the chest the so-called cyrtogram, the chest circumference recorded by means of a wire, is val

Unilateral Möbius syndrome: two cases and a review of the literature.

IMPORTANCE: The Möbius sequence is a rare condition defined by the combination of congenital non-progressive facial and abducens nerve palsies. The etiology of the sequence is still unknown, but likely encompasses a group of heterogeneous disorders involving genetic maldevelopment of the brainstem, a fetal vascular insult and/or teratogen exposure. The clinical phenotype reported has expanded over the years, and may be associated with more extensive cranial nerve and oropharyngeal involvement, as well as limb defects. OBSERVATIONS: We describe two cases of children presenting with unilateral

SOX14 is a candidate gene for limb defects associated with BPES and Möbius syndrome.

Members of the SOX gene family encode proteins with homology to the HMG box DNA-binding domain of SRY, the Y-linked testis-determining gene. SOX genes are expressed during embryogenesis and are involved in the development of a wide range of different tissues. Mutations in SRY, SOX9 and SOX10 have been shown to be responsible for XY sex reversal, campomelic dysplasia and Waardenburg-Hirschsprung disease, respectively. It is likely that mutations in other SOX genes are responsible for a variety of human genetic diseases. SOX14 has been identified from a human genomic library and the mouse and ch

Degenerate pathway for processing smile and other emotional expressions in congenital facial palsy: an hdEEG investigation.

Influential theoretical models argue that an internal simulation mechanism (motor or sensorimotor simulation) supports the recognition of facial expressions. However, despite numerous converging sources of evidence, recent studies testing patients with congenital facial palsy (i.e. Moebius syndrome) seem to refute these theoretical models. However, these results do not consider the principles of neuroplasticity and degeneracy that could support the involvement of an alternative neural processing pathway in these patients. In the present study, we tested healthy participants and participants wi

A proposal for new neurorehabilitative intervention on Moebius Syndrome patients after 'smile surgery'. Proof of concept based on mirror neuron system properties and hand-mouth synergistic activity.

Studies of the last twenty years on the motor and premotor cortices of primates demonstrated that the motor system is involved in the control and initiation of movements, and in higher cognitive processes, such as action understanding, imitation, and empathy. Mirror neurons are only one example of such theoretical shift. Their properties demonstrate that motor and sensory processing are coupled in the brain. Such knowledge has been also central for designing new neurorehabilitative therapies for patients suffering from brain injuries and consequent motor deficits. Moebius Syndrome patients, fo

Moebius syndrome and hypopituitarism: a case of multiple pituitary hormone deficiency and revision of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Moebius syndrome (MS) is a rare congenital non-progressive rhombencephalic disorder mostly characterised by abducens and facial nerve palsy, but with a multifaceted clinical presentation. Isolated or multiple pituitary hormone deficiencies in the setting of MS have been occasionally reported, but the simultaneous involvement of three or more hypothalamic-pituitary axes has never been described. We hereby report the case of a girl with MS that showed a co-occurrence of GH-, TSH- and ACTH-deficiency. In addition, we provide a systematic revision of all the published cases of hypopitu

Three Cases of Exotropic Moebius Syndrome.

Moebius syndrome is characterized by congenital facial palsy and limitation in horizontal gaze. The surgical results of the exotropic pattern are rare and have not been published before. The authors report three cases of exotropic Moebius syndrome. Maximal weakening of the lateral rectus muscles followed by strengthening of the medial recti in exotropic Moebius syndrome can improve exotropia significantly. Most of these cases also need some measures to relieve the often associated severe dry eye. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2017;54:e9-e12.].
