An application of the biopsychosocial model for pain in Canadian Veterans Life After Service Studies 2019 survey.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is highly prevalent and disruptive to the general population. Relative to civilians, Veterans are more likely to experience chronic pain due to occupational requirements during military service and associated psychological difficulties. The biopsychosocial model is a promising theoretical framework for understanding potential causes of chronic pain, as well as a path for implementing evidence-based interventions. METHODS: This study applied the biopsychosocial framework to data from the Life After Service Studies 2019 survey by modelling biopsychosocial predictors o

A biopsychosocial model of MDMA-assisted therapy in application: Dyadic One Session Treatment for specific phobia.

3,4-methelenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) can be effective in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in controlled trials, potentially secondary to MDMA's effects on neural circuits implicated in fear and reward. Although anxiety, stress, and fear-based disorders involve maladaptation of the neural circuits processing fear, threat, and reward, no studies have tested MDMA's therapeutic efficacy on specific phobias. This article proposes a naturalistic biopsychosocial model of MDMA assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) informed by the neurobiological mechanisms of MDMA and the theoretical models of E

Screening for antenatal depression and its determinants among pregnant women in Qatar: revisiting the biopsychosocial model.

BACKGROUND: Screening for antenatal depression and its determinants is highly recommended. However, there is no consensus on a standard conceptual framework to approach pregnant women in a primary health care setting. The prevalence of antenatal depression and significant determinants are unknown in Qatar, a gap that we propose to fill. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study with a probability sampling technique was employed. Enrolling eight-hundred participants from primary health care centers. The screening was performed through a valid and reliable screening instrument 'Edinburgh Pos

A Conceptual Model of Biopsychosocial Mechanisms of Transition from Acute to Chronic Postsurgical Pain in Children and Adolescents.

Acute and chronic pain are highly prevalent and impactful consequences of surgery across the lifespan, yet a comprehensive conceptual model encompassing biopsychosocial factors underlying acute to chronic pain transition is lacking, particularly in youth. Building on prior chronic postsurgical pain models, we propose a new conceptual model of biopsychosocial mechanisms of transition from acute to chronic postsurgical pain. This review aims to summarize existing research examining key factors underlying acute to chronic postsurgical pain transition in order to guide prevention and intervention

Advancements in Understanding and Classifying Chronic Orofacial Pain: Key Insights from Biopsychosocial Models and International Classifications (ICHD-3, ICD-11, ICOP).

In exploring chronic orofacial pain (COFP), this review highlights its global impact on life quality and critiques current diagnostic systems, including the ICD-11, ICOP, and ICHD-3, for their limitations in addressing COFP's complexity. Firstly, this study outlines the global burden of chronic pain and the importance of distinguishing between different pain types for effective treatment. It then delves into the specific challenges of diagnosing COFP, emphasizing the need for a more nuanced approach that incorporates the biopsychosocial model. This review critically examines existing classific

A Biopsychosocial Model of Predictors of Methadone Maintenance Treatment Retention Among Iranian Men With Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder remains a significant public health burden in Iran. While methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is effective, its success is often limited by high attrition rates. Most protocols emphasize pharmacological factors, neglecting the multifaceted biopsychosocial nature of treatment retention. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal cohort study involved 342 men with opioid use disorder from 10 public and private treatment centers in Iran. Path analysis with diagonally weighted least squares (DWLS) was used to evaluate biological, social, and psychological predictors

Barriers and facilitators to continuous glucose monitor use in type 1 diabetes: A biopsychosocial model of the adolescent experience.

Our study aims to understand the barriers and facilitators surrounding continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) in adolescents experiencing diabetes distress from type 1 diabetes through a biopsychosocial lens. We qualitatively analyzed interviews of 21 adolescents and coded their emotional experiences. Findings show that biologically, adolescents noted improved mood with healthier glucose ranges and future health prospects. Psychologically, adolescents preferred a sense of control over when to use, and take a break from, their CGM. Socially, they described mixed feelings surrounding how CGM use imp

Biopsychosocial theories of borderline personality disorder: a meta-synthesis and psychopathological network model from a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition with an altered image of self, impulsive acts, suicidal ideation, and self-harm requiring intensive care in outpatient and inpatient settings. The biopsychosocial (BPS) model adopted in the current study extracted the outcomes of a research about the diagnosis, causes and treatment of BPD. A network model helped link these results in a unitary model with applications in clinical practice for assessment and intervention. METHODS: We conducted a literature review of current studies on the BPS causes of BPD an

The Influences of Drug Abuse on Mother-Infant Interaction Through the Lens of the Biopsychosocial Model of Health and Illness: A Review.

Women who abuse illicit drugs often engage in atypical parenting behaviors that interfere with the natural development of mother-infant interaction and attachment. Maternal caregiving deficits leave pronounced adverse consequences in the wake of drug abuse relapse, which often occurs and in early infancy. These are times when the child requires optimal parental care. The contemporary literature documents long-term implications of illicit drug-abuse in parenting on infants. However, factors that drive and sustain the influence of drug abuse on parent-infant outcomes remain elusive. This review
