Women in post-trafficking services in Moldova: diagnostic interviews over two time periods to assess returning women's mental health.

BACKGROUND: Trafficking in women is a widespread human rights violation commonly associated with poor mental health. Yet, to date, no studies have used psychiatric diagnostic assessment to identify common forms of mental distress among survivors returning to their home country. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted of women aged 18 and over who returned to Moldova between December 2007 and December 2008 registered by the International Organisation for Migration as a survivor of human trafficking. Psychiatric diagnoses in women at a mean of 6 months after return (range 2-12 months) were

Genomic characterization of selected influenza A-positive specimens and an A(H1N1)pdm09/SARS-CoV-2 co-infection in the Republic of Moldova.

BACKGROUND: Genomic sequencing can complement routine influenza surveillance by enabling clade-level characterization of selected specimens and the genomic characterization of mixed viral specimens. This descriptive laboratory-based study characterized influenza A-positive respiratory specimens collected through routine surveillance in the Republic of Moldova and selected for sequencing. METHODS: Between October 2025 and February 2026, 1,081 respiratory specimens were screened by multiplex real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for influenza A, influenza B, and SARS-CoV-2.

Assessment of quality of life after traumatic brain injury in adults from Armenia, Georgia, and Moldova using EQ-5D-5L.

Purpose Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs more frequently in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) than in high-income settings, yet data on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) from these regions remain scarce. This study assessed HRQoL outcomes in adult TBI patients in Armenia, Georgia, and Moldova. Methods Between March and September 2019, TBI data were collected using a standardized hospital-based registry in one trauma hospital per country. Demographics, injury characteristics, and symptoms were recorded; HRQoL was assessed at discharge using EQ-5D-5L. Results 386 patients were incl

Health system-related barriers and facilitators to tuberculosis preventive treatment: a qualitative case study comparing implementation in the Republic of Moldova and Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite WHO's recommendations and the 2023-2030 Tuberculosis (TB) action plan, uptake of TB preventive treatment (TPT) remains suboptimal. In this paper, we use two countries of the WHO Europe Region, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia, that are at different stages of implementation of TB prevention policies, as a case study to examine health system barriers and facilitators to TPT scale-up. METHODS: In this case study, we used methods of qualitative research-interviews with three stakeholder groups: health service providers and National TB Programme staff; civil society organi

High rates of acquired resistance to fluoroquinolones, bedaquiline, and linezolid in patients failing treatment against drug-resistant tuberculosis in the Republic of Moldova.

OBJECTIVES: Mycobacterium tuberculosis with rifampicin resistance ranks among the four critical antimicrobial-resistant pathogens needing priority attention as identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2024. Our objective was to identify the causes of treatment failure in patients diagnosed with multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) in a nationwide cohort in the Republic of Moldova, a WHO high-burden country of MDR/RR-TB. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analysed national tuberculosis surveillance data (2021-2022) on patients diagnosed with MDR/RR-T

Healthcare provision for displaced people in transit: Analyses of routinely collected data from INTERSOS clinics at the Ukrainian border with Moldova and Poland.

BACKGROUND: The Russian military invasion of Ukraine has sparked Europe's largest forced displacement since World War II, bringing about significant health vulnerabilities for migrants and refugees. European health information systems lack comprehensive data coverage, especially in underrepresented migration stages like transit. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing data from INTERSOS clinics at the Moldovan and Polish borders with Ukraine to identify the common health conditions prompting people to seek healthcare services during transit. METHODS: From 6th March to 31st May 2022,

A pilot implementation study to scale-up methadone in incarcerated persons with opioid use disorder and retain them on treatment after release in Moldova.

BACKGROUND: Eastern Europe and Central Asia have intertwined HIV and incarceration epidemics, concentrated in people who inject drugs. Moldova is one of the few countries in this region that offers methadone within prisons, but uptake and post-release retention remains suboptimal. Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) procedures are a potential implementation strategy to address this problem. METHODS: From June 1, 2017 to March 3, 2018, we conducted a 2-stage SBIRT strategy in nine prisons and four pre-trial detention facilities in Moldova among incarcerated persons

Cost-effectiveness of modified fully oral 9-month treatment regimens for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Moldova.

INTRODUCTION: Prior to 2020, treatment options for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) were limited and typically involved long treatment durations and high financial burdens. In the eastern European and central Asian (EECA) region, traditional inpatient tuberculosis (TB) care models, alongside high MDR-TB rates, escalate nosocomial transmission risks and treatment costs. Modified, fully oral, shorter treatment regimens (mSTR) implemented in the WHO European Region under operational research conditions offered a potential reduction in the burden of MDR-TB treatment for both patients and

Probation as a targeted entry point for scaling up opioid agonist therapies in Moldova using a modified screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment strategy.

People with HIV and opioid use disorder (OUD) are concentrated in criminal legal settings. Consequently, decarceration efforts in Moldova have shifted many people in prisons to community supervision in probation. Probation differs from prisons as they have no mandate to screen and treat for medical conditions like OUD and link to evidence-based treatments like methadone or buprenorphine, otherwise known as medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). We hypothesized that probation settings are a missed opportunity to screen and link to treatment for HIV and OUD. From November 2019 to April 2023

Health and economic impact of hepatitis B vaccination in the national immunization program in Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan-a modelling study.

Hepatitis B (HBV) remains a major public health concern in the WHO European Region, causing approximately 32,000 deaths annually as of 2022. Fortunately, HBV vaccination is highly effective in preventing infection. The WHO Regional Office for Europe established criteria for countries to be validated in reaching interim targets for HBV control through immunization, advancing toward the goal of hepatitis elimination. Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan conducted national HBV serosurveys, which revealed a significant reduction in chronic HBV prevalence among indivi

HIV, hepatitis and syphilis prevalence and correlates of condom use during anal sex among men who have sex with men in the Republic of Moldova.

Limited data on HIV prevalence and related risks among men who have sex with men (MSM) exist in the Republic of Moldova. In Chisinau and Balti, 188 and 209, respectively, men who reported having anal or oral sex in the last six months with another man, aged ≥16 years were recruited into a study in 2010 using respondent-driven sampling methods. MSM reported having multiple male and female partners and inconsistent condom use. In Chisinau, 2% of MSM were HIV seropositive, 3.7% had antibodies to hepatitis C (HCV), 5.7% had antibodies to hepatitis B (HBV) and 12.1% had syphilis. In Balti, less tha

Sustainability and long-term effectiveness of the WHO surgical safety checklist combined with pulse oximetry in a resource-limited setting: two-year update from Moldova.

IMPORTANCE: Little is known about the sustainability and long-term effect of surgical safety checklists when implemented in resource-limited settings. A previous study demonstrated the marked, short-term effect of a structured hospital-wide implementation of a surgical safety checklist in Moldova, a lower-middle-income country, as have studies in other low-resource settings. OBJECTIVES: To assess the long-term reduction in perioperative harm following the introduction of a checklist-based surgical quality improvement program in a resource-limited setting and to understand the long-term effect

Sustainability of opioid agonist therapy programmes in Belarus, the Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan and Ukraine in the context of transition from Global Fund support during 2020-2023.

BACKGROUND: Most national programmes of opioid agonist therapy (OAT) in Eastern Europe and Central Asia are at a critical juncture for building their sustainability due to decreasing support from the Global Fund and other international HIV funders. Therefore, it is timely to identify the status, trends, opportunities and risk factors of OAT preparedness in the face of donor transition. METHODS: The study assessed the OAT sustainability progress in 4 countries: Belarus, the Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan and Ukraine. The study used a comparative country case study design with qualitative meth

Knowledge, opinions, and practices related to oral cancer prevention and oral mucosal examination among dentists in Moldova, Belarus and Armenia: a multi-country cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia are post-Soviet countries with a high rate of heavy smokers and a relatively high age-standardized incidence of oral cancer. However, to our knowledge, there is lack of available information on dentists' knowledge on prevention of oral cancer in the countries in question. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the knowledge, opinions, and practices related to oral cancer prevention and oral mucosal examination among dentists in Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia. METHODS: This was a multi-country, cross-sectional study based on a self-administered quest

Molecular identification of cystic echinococcosis in humans and pigs reveals the presence of both Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto and Echinococcus canadensis G6/G7 in the hyperendemic focus of the Republic of Moldova.

Cystic echinococcosis is caused by the parasitic species of the complex Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. This disease is hyperendemic in the Republic of Moldova. Recent molecular analyses have revealed the exclusive presence of E. granulosus sensu stricto in sheep and cattle. Previous reports of prevalence in pigs suggest the potential presence of Echinococcus canadensis G6/G7, as this species is also reported in neighboring countries. The presence of cystic echinococcosis in pigs was specifically monitored at the slaughterhouse. In the meantime, human cases were genotyped for the first tim

Establishing a baseline for environmental risk assessment: a systematic review of the disposal of mining tailings in the crossborder region Romania - Serbia.

The cross-border region between Romania and Serbia has been deeply affected by decades of mining activities, resulting in significant environmental degradation and public health risks. By consolidating data from peer-reviewed studies, government reports, and environmental monitoring datasets, this systematic review and quantitative synthesis establish a critical basis for the environmental risk assessment from mining activities as a result of tailings storage in the Romania-Serbia cross-border area, with a focus on the Moldova Nouă (Romania) and Bor (Serbia) mining areas. Following PRISMA 2020

The global phylogeography of rapidly expanding multidrug resistant Ural lineage 4.2 Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) epidemics are sustained by transmission of reproductively fit MDR M. tuberculosis (Mtb) strains. We search a large publicly available dataset of ~200,000 Mtb whole genome sequences to identify strains related to a highly successful MDR clade circulating in Moldova belonging to lineage 4.2.1/Ural. We characterize a clade of 1604 drug-resistant Mtb sequences harboring conserved resistance-conferring mutations. We identify the Russian Federation as the most likely country of origin for this clade and infer several independent migration events from Russia
