Three new species of Valvatidae, Planorbidae, and Lymnaeidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda) from Lake Bitahai, Yunnan Plateau, China.

Three new species of freshwater snails are described from Lake Bitahai, a small plateau lake located in the high altitude region of northwestern Yunnan, China: Valvata bitaensis Zhang, sp. nov., Gyraulus semskyinyizla Zhang, sp. nov., and Radix shangrila Zhang, sp. nov. These new species can be distinguished from their congeners by morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Valvata bitaensis Zhang, sp. nov. has an aperture that is always detached from the body whorl, while its shell is sometimes uncoiled. Gyraulus semskyinyizla Zhang, sp. nov. can be distinguished from its sister species

Genetic sex determination, gender identification and pseudohermaphroditism in the knobbed whelk, Busycon carica (Mollusca: Melongenidae).

We report perhaps the first genic-level molecular documentation of a mammalian-like 'X-linked' mode of sex determination in molluscs. From family inheritance data and observed associations between sex-phenotyped adults and genotypes in Busycon carica, we deduce that a polymorphic microsatellite locus (bc2.2) is diploid and usually heterozygous in females, hemizygous in males, and that its alleles are transmitted from mothers to sons and daughters but from fathers to daughters only. We also employ bc2.2 to estimate near-conception sex ratio in whelk embryos, where gender is indeterminable by vi

Comparative morphology of Astraea latispina (Philippi, 1844) and Astraea olfersii (Philippi, 1846) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Turbinidae).

The present study examines comparatively the soft parts of turbinids Astraea latispina and Astraea olfersii. The characters of soft parts of these species, in agreement with Trochoidea organization, allow a differential diagnosis on the cefalic lappets, appendix of eye-stalk, hypobranchial glands, jaws, radulae, and stomach spiral caecum, which information will be helpful in taxonomic studies.

Transcriptomic sequence dataset of a potential new model species for studying biomineralization Onchidoris muricata (Nudibranchia, Gastropoda, Mollusca).

Onchidoris muricata is a widespread shell-less species of nudibranch molluscs, which has unique for Gastropoda skeletal elements - subepidermal calcite spicules. The general and fine morphology of the spicules, as well as their maturation process in ontogenesis, have been studied in detail by authors. The uniqueness of spicules lies in their intracellular formation and location under the ectodermal epithelium, which is more typical for deuterostomes. We present O. muricata as a potentially new model species for studying calcification of intracellular protein structure. A total of 96 individual

Iberian Distribution of the Freshwater Snail Genus Bithynia Leach, 1818 (Mollusca: Truncatelloidea), Vector of Opisthorchiasis and Metorchiasis.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis felineus and Metorchis bilis are trematodes that cause opisthorchiasis and metorchiasis, respectively. The freshwater snails Bithynia hispanica and B. tentaculata are the respective intermediate hosts for these parasites in the Iberian Peninsula, where both parasites are present. METHODS: To study the distribution of these snail species, an exhaustive literature review and revision of museum collections was performed. RESULTS: A total of 370 localities were compiled and mapped. B. tentaculata were found throughout the Iberian Peninsula, both in Spain and Portugal, wh

Morphology of epithelial cells lining the digestive tract of the giant keyhole limpet, Megathura crenulata (Mollusca; Vetigastropoda).

To understand the digestive functions in the giant keyhole limpet, it is important to know the types of cells present in each region of the gut and their roles in the secretion of digestive enzymes and absorption of nutrients. This study describes the morphology of cells lining the entire gut and identifies sites that may be secreting materials to aid digestion. Previous studies involving electron microscopy and enzyme analysis have focused on the salivary and digestive glands of several gastropods. Studies on the rest of the gut tract typically include only histological descriptions of the ep

Natural products isolated from species of Halgerda bergh, 1880 (Mollusca: Nudibranchia) and their ecological and evolutionary implications.

Chemical investigations of five species of molluscan nudibranchs, Halgerda, collected from Australia and Japan were carried out. We identified a novel tryptophan derivative halgerdamine (1) along with the known compounds trigonellin (3), esmodil (4), zooanemonin (5), and C2-alpha-D-mannosylpyranosyl-L-tryptophan (2) from Halgerda aurantiomaculata. C2-alpha-D-mannosylpyranosyl-L-tryptophan (2) was previously thought to be a by-product of tryptophan metabolism exclusive to humans. The only other chordates reported to contain this compound are a number of ascidian species from New Caledonia and A

[Mollusca contagiosa in HIV infection. Clinical manifestation, relation to immune status and prognostic value in 39 patients].

Mollusca contagiosa predominantly affect children; their occurrence in adults is rare. In recent years many descriptions of mollusca contagiosa in immunosuppressed patients, mostly in HIV-infected individuals, have appeared. We analysed the occurrence of mollusca contagiosa in a large group of HIV-patients and examined their relation to the immune status and their prognostic significance. 456 patients with HIV-associated skin disorders were documented in the HIV follow-up clinics at the Department of Dermatology, University Medical Center Benjamin Franklin, Berlin, during the years 1982-1992.

Development and validation of an OECD reproductive toxicity test guideline with the mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Mollusca, Gastropoda).

Mollusks are known to be uniquely sensitive to a number of reproductive toxicants including some vertebrate endocrine disrupting chemicals. However, they have widely been ignored in environmental risk assessment procedures for chemicals. This study describes the validation of the Potamopyrgus antipodarum reproduction test within the OECD Conceptual Framework for Endocrine Disrupters Testing and Assessment. The number of embryos in the brood pouch and adult mortality serve as main endpoints. The experiments are conducted as static systems in beakers filled with artificial medium, which is aerat

Occurrence of Biomphalaria cousini (Mollusca: Gastropoda) in Brazil and its susceptibility to Schistosoma mansoni (Platyhelminths: Trematoda).

In Brazil, there are three intermediate snail vectors and two potential hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. Previous studies showed three variant molecular profiles to B. amazonica and evidenced intraspecific variations using sequence data. In this context, the aim of this study was to verify whether such differences would correspond to either B. amazonica or B. cousini. The snails were morphologically identified; PCR-RFLP and sequencing were carried out. Besides, B. cousini were submitted to susceptibility experiments to S. mansoni. Noteworthy, morphological data of Brazilian specimens predominantl

Cutaneous application of an accessory-gland secretion after sperm exchange in a terrestrial slug (Mollusca: Pulmonata).

Competition for fertilisation in hermaphroditic animals seems to have led to many odd behaviours and complex morphologies involved in the transfer of accessory-gland products to the partner. Terrestrial slugs of the genus Deroceras show remarkably elaborate and interspecifically diverse penis morphologies and mating behaviours. Most species have an appending penial gland, which in Deroceras panormitanum consists of a few long fingers that are everted after sperm exchange and laid onto the partner's back. To investigate whether this gland transfers a secretion onto the partner's skin, we killed

The junction zone: Initial site of mineralization in radula teeth of the chiton Cryptoplax striata (Mollusca: Polyplacophora).

Elemental composition and distribution in individual teeth of the whole radula of the chiton Cryptoplax striata were analyzed using energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Both the element deposited and its position within the tooth vary according to the stage of mineralization. The initial site of mineralization is the junction zone, the region between the tooth cusp and base. In this region, the first element to be deposited is iron, followed by phosphorus and then calcium. Iron deposition next commences in the tooth cusp cap, where it proceeds rapidly, being virtually complete within 12 tooth rows.

IgE reactivity against a cross-reactive allergen in crustacea and mollusca: evidence for tropomyosin as the common allergen.

BACKGROUND: Although cross-reactivity between mollusks and other crustaceans in shrimp-sensitive subjects has been reported, the mechanism of this allergenic cross-reactivity has not been studied in detail. OBJECTIVE: To investigate this cross-reactivity in vitro, we have taken advantage of a complementary DNA that expresses tropomyosin, the immunodominant shrimp allergen. METHODS: Serum IgE from nine patients with known anaphylaxis to shrimp and five normal volunteers were analyzed by immunoblotting against 13 distinct crustaceans and mollusks. As additional antigens, muscle preparations we

Going deep: phylogenomic analyses incorporating museomic data reveal divergence and character evolution in Decapodiformes (Mollusca: Cephalopoda).

Decapodiformes, including cuttlefishes and squid, are ecologically diverse cephalopods widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, yet the evolutionary history of their morphological and ecological traits remains poorly understood. Here, we developed a phylogenetic workflow for decapodiforms by integrating transcriptomic and genome skimming data from 48 freshly collected and historical specimens. The resulting dataset comprised over 6000 loci and covered all major extant lineages. Phylogenetic analyses consistently recovered Idiosepida as the sister lineage to all other decapodiforms. Am

Nuclear Intron Sequence Variation of the Bulinus globosus Complex (Mollusca: Planorbidae): Implications for Molecular Systematic Analyses.

Urinary schistosomiasis is caused by the blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium, which is predominantly found in Africa. The freshwater snail Bulinus globosus is its main intermediate host. The species that make up the B. globosus group are genetically complex, and their taxonomic status remains controversial. Genetic variation, heterozygosity, and DNA recombination in B. globosus were examined using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and the intron 3 region of the arginine kinase gene (AkInt3). A total of 81 B. globosus snails were collected from three different localities in

Aesthete Pattern Diversity in Chiton Clades (Mollusca: Polyplacophora): Balancing Sensory Structures and Strength in Valve Architecture.

Chitons possess the most elaborate system of shell pores found in any hard-shelled invertebrate. Although chitons possess some anteriorly located sense organs, they lack true cephalization, as their major sensory systems are not concentrated in a distinct head region. Instead, the aesthete system within their shells forms a dense sensory network that overcomes the barrier of their hard dorsal armour. The basic arrangement of neural structures embedded within a solid, opaque matrix, has confounded understanding of the overall network. In this study, we use synchrotron X-ray μCT to visualise the

Immunological Parameters of the Pomacea lineata Spix, 1827 (Mollusca: Caenogastropoda) Exposed to Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907.

INTRODUCTION: Pomacea lineata acts as the natural biological controller of Biomphalaria glabrata, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, as they are found in the same environment. However, there are no studies reporting an infection in P. lineata due to S. mansoni. Thus, this work investigated parameters related to the immunity of P. lineata after exposure for 24 and 48 h to S. mansoni under experimental conditions. METHODS: The F1 generation of these snails was used in this study. The total and differential counts of hemocytes, phenoloxidase, nitric oxide, total proteins, expression o

Semperula wallacei (Mollusca, Veronicellidae) um hospedeiro natural recém-descoberto de Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Nematoda, Angiostrongylidae) na Bacia do Pacífico.

Semperula wallacei (Issel, 1874) is a species of terrestrial slug that occurs in southeast China and the Pacific Basin and is the only species of its genus that occurs beyond the Oriental region and to the east of Wallace's line in the Australian region, where it has probably been introduced. In this study, we report for the first time S. wallacei as an intermediate host for Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Chen, 1935) based on histological and molecular analyses of slugs from Tuamasaga, Samoa, deposited at the Medical Malacological Collection (Fiocruz-CMM). DNA was obtained from the deparafinized
