Current status of iodine deficiency in Mongolia in 1998-1999.

In 1992, the Mongolian government conducted a nationwide palpation study of the thyroid glands, and the study showed an overall goiter rate of 30%. As a result of this, the Mongolian Government launched its Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Elimination Programme in 1996 and its primary strategy was salt iodization. In 1998 and 1999, we carried out programme monitoring studies in 11 provinces. The results showed: among schoolchildren, a goiter rate was 22.8% (n = 6,535), median values of urinary iodine excretion ranged from 11 micrograms/l to 256 micrograms/l (n = 1,930), and usage rates of iod

Prediction and control for the transmission of brucellosis in inner Mongolia, China.

Brucellosis, a zoonotic infectious disease caused by the Brucella genus, remains a significant global public health concern, with Inner Mongolia, China, being a notable hotspot affecting both human health and livestock. In response to this, we developed a dynamic SEIVWShIahIch model to simulate the transmission of brucellosis in Inner Mongolia. We calculated the basic reproduction number (R0 = 2.86), indicating a severe epidemic trend with cases expected to increase over the coming decades. The model was fitted to human brucellosis data, and key transmission parameters were estimated to predic

Hard ticks and tick-borne pathogens in Mongolia-A review.

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose a considerable threat to human and animal health in Mongolia; a large and sparsely inhabited country whose economy is largely dependent on animal production. Intensive contact between herdsmen and their livestock, together with the use of pastures without fencing, allows contact between wildlife, domestic animals and humans, thus creating ideal conditions for epizoonoses and zoonoses. Consequently, ticks and TBPs cause significant medical, veterinary, and economical concern. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge about this zoonotic pro

[Analysis on poliomyelitis cases in Inner Mongolia in 1990-1993].

Out of 97 AFP cases, 68 were confirmed polio in Inner Mongolia in 1990-1993, in which 44.12% were diagnosed according to laboratory results. In this period, 13 strains of polio virus were isolated and identified from the stool samples of 62 AFP cases. The etiological results suggested that there was no dominant strain of polio virus in the whole region. Serological results showed that the positive rates of IgM antibody against polio virus were 75%, 26% and 0% in 1990, 1991, 1993 respectively which seemed to have a declining trend.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Cattle in Mongolia.

Poultry and cattle are the major reservoirs of Campylobacter infection in humans. However, no information is available on Campylobacter spp. in cattle in Mongolia. Thus, this study aimed to assess their prevalence and antimicrobial resistance. Between 2019 and 2023, rectal swabs were collected from cattle on dairy farms around Ulaanbaatar city and in total, 35 Campylobacter spp., including 23 C. jejuni, 7 C. hyointestinalis, 4 C. fetus, and 1 C. lari, were isolated. Multilocus sequence typing of C. jejuni cattle isolates revealed substantial genetic diversity and identified 7 sequence types (S

Chemical constituents isolated from Zygophyllum melongena Bunge growing in Mongolia.

We report the first investigation of the chemical constituents of Zygophyllum melongena Bunge, a species growing in Mongolia. The quinovic acid glycosides 3-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)quinovic acid and 3-O-(β-D-glucopyranosyl)quinovic acid (28→1)-(β-D-glucopyranosyl) ester were identified in the chloroform fraction along with the flavonoid glycoside astragalin. The n-butanol fraction contained (+)-D-pinitol as the major component, a cyclitol with anti-diabetic properties. The structures of the isolated natural products were confirmed using ESI-MS and NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, COSY, HSQC, HMBC,

To defect incidence of development hip dysplasia by hip ultrasound and to determine efficacy of early treatment: a pilot study in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Until recently, in Mongolia, early detection and treatment of DDH (developmental dysplasia of the hip) in the first months of life was not possible. A high prevalence as well as a large number of false positive cases indicate an important burden of disease. Since 2009, a project based on ultrasound method of Reinhard Graf is being run by a swiss-mongolian cooperation. A large study including more than 8000 newborns proved, that trained neonatol

First molecular detection of Dirofilaria immitis in dogs from Mongolia.

Canine heartworm disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy, 1856), is a parasitic roundworm infection common in tropical regions. It impacts animals and humans, residing in pulmonary arteries and causing severe lung damage and significant health risks. Although well-studied globally, canine heartworm infections remain uninvestigated in Mongolia. This study aimed to detect microfilariae and identify D. immitis in dogs, contributing to understanding the presence of heartworm disease in Mongolia's urban areas. Hematologic samples (n = 180) were collected from owned and unowned dogs across six

A palaeopathological analysis of skeletal remains from Bronze Age Mongolia.

Little is known about the lifeways of the people who inhabited the Mongolian steppe during the Bronze Age (c. 4450-2650 BP). Palaeopathological analysis allows us to draw inferences about the lifeways of past people from the indicators of health and lifestyle recorded in human remains. This paper presents results of analysis of the remains of 25 individuals excavated in northern Mongolia. Overall, the remains demonstrated very little pathology. In particular the lack of evidence for both infectious and non-communicable diseases, along with the patterns of dental pathology indicate a group of p

Cystic echinococcoses in Mongolia: molecular identification, serology and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a globally distributed cestode zoonosis that causes hepatic cysts. Although Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) is the major causative agent of CE worldwide, recent molecular epidemiological studies have revealed that E. canadensis is common in countries where camels are present. One such country is Mongolia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Forty-three human hepatic CE cases that were confirmed histopathologically at the National Center of Pathology (NCP) in Ulaanbaatar (UB) were identified by analysis of mitochondrial cox 1 gene as being cau

Cleft palate repair in Mongolia: Modified palatoplasty vs. conventional technique.

CONTEXT: Cleft palate repair is preferentially completed between 6 and 18 months of age, facilitating essential speech and language development along with swallowing and feeding reflexes, and avoiding otitis media and hearing loss. In Mongolia patients often present in early adulthood for cleft lip and/or palate management. Wider defects are associated with older age groups and have higher rates of fistula formation and wound dehiscence. These complications encouraged a modified surgical technique for improved outcomes. AIMS: Objectives of this study were to compare the efficacy of three esta

Immunogenicity of imported foot-and-mouth vaccines in different species in Mongolia.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a high impact viral disease of livestock for which vaccines are extensively used in control. Mongolia has regular incursions of FMD virus that are typically limited to the eastern region although large epidemics are occasionally reported in the normally disease-free western areas. Vaccines are imported and form an important component of the control strategy. In 2015, post-vaccination monitoring guidelines were published by the FAO-OIE recommending approaches for assessing the appropriateness of imported vaccines including small-scale immunogenicity studies. Seroprevalence of equine glanders in horses in the central and eastern parts of Mongolia.

Glanders is a contagious and fatal equine disease caused by the gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia mallei. B. mallei is prevalent among horse populations in Asia, the Middle East, and South America. More than four million horses have been registered in Mongolia in 2020. However, the recent prevalence of glanders has not been well investigated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the seropositivity of B. mallei in horse populations in Mongolia using the complement fixation test (CFT) and Rose Bengal plate agglutination test (RBT). We randomly collected blood samples from horses in central

A Seroepidemiological Survey of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in Horses in Mongolia.

Equine piroplasmosis caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi is an economically important disease with a worldwide distribution. The objective of the present study was to investigate the seroepidemiology of T. equi and B. caballi in horses reared in various Mongolian provinces. Serum samples prepared from blood collected from horses in 19 Mongolian provinces were screened for antibodies specific to T. equi and B. caballi using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays based on recombinant forms of T. equi merozoite antigen-2 and the B. caballi 48-kDa merozoite rhoptry protein, respectively.
