The only son of Russia's last Tsar, a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, continues to be used as the favorite example of the X-linked inheritance of hemophilia, in spite of the fact that this popular historical diathesis has never been confirmed by any form of modern medical laboratory testing. Certain to be controversial, a new study of the symptoms that were witnessed by those who were closest to the teenaged Russian heir now raises the possibility that his blood disorder might well have been something other than hemophilia. The key to discovering Tsarevich Alexei's true diagnosis is found in

In the novel "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, a fanatical monk laced the pages of a book with a poison, which led to the death of several monks in a medieval monastery. Based on modern toxicological knowledge, an attempt can be made to determine whether there exists a substance meeting the criteria of the poison described in the novel. To this end, toxicological literature on the lethal doses of plant-derived poisons and their duration of action was reviewed. Cowbane (Cicuta virosa), a plant used for preparing poisonous potions, contains cicutoxin which kills at a dose of 500 mg. Similar

PURPOSE: From the eleventh to the thirteenth century, three major events marked surgery in France: the appearance of an epidemic linked to ergotism which led to numerous amputations, the emergence of barber surgeons for civilian practice, and the organization of war surgery for the First Crusade.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: If a certain separation between medicine and surgery had appeared at the beginning of the Middle Ages, it would have been from 1215 (at the time of the Lateran Council) that the real separation between medicine and surgery was made. Before this date, the surgery was done by the

PURPOSE: We discuss the history of Frère Jacques Beaulieu, a celebrated 17th century French lithotomist, and question the relationship of his name to a well-known nursery rhyme character.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed historical reports about Beaulieu and his career as a lithotomist. Nursery rhyme interpretations were also reviewed.
RESULTS: Beaulieu was born in 1651 to a peasant family and learned the practice of lithotomy by apprenticeship. He was never formally ordained yet donned a monk habit and called himself Frère Jacques. He was the first person to use the lateral approach to pe

What is already known about this topic? Both alveolar echinococcosis (AE) and cystic echinococcosis are endemic in China, among which alveolar echinococcosis has a very high mortality rate. What is added by this report? The survey results showed the prevalence and scope of AE in China and identified high-risk groups including children, monks, herdsmen and illiterate people. At the same time, all the cases found in the survey (more than 90% of the patients did not go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment before survey) were promptly diagnosed and treated. What are the implications for pub

In 2022-23, the human monkeypox virus (MPXV) caused a global outbreak in several non-endemic countries. Here, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of four real-time qualitative PCR assays for the laboratory diagnosis of mpox (monkeypox) monkeypox disease. From July to August 2022, 27 positive and 10 negative specimens (lesion, crust and exudate swabs) were tested in the laboratory of the Hygiene Unit of the San Martino Hospital (Genoa, Italy) by using home-made real-time PCR to detect MPXV generic G2R_G DNA. According to the manufacturer's instructions, we also retrospectively analyzed thes

Liquorice is a very ancient plant widely used in the East for millennia. It has often been employed in sweets and confectionery and also for minor ailments including cough, constipation and dyspepsia. It was probably carried to Europe by the Cluniac order of monks. Then, almost by accident, it became established in West Yorkshire at Pontefract after the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. Abuse of liquorice is not uncommon. It can occur in the anorexia/bulimia syndrome and also in the dangerous condition of pseudoaldosteronism, which is characterised by severe hypertension and hypokal

The history of women as medical and surgical practitioners stretches back to at least 3500 B. C. Wall painting in tombs and temples of ancient Egypt show them performing surgical procedures and there is also evidence that women surgeons were practicing in ancient Sumeria, Babylon, Greece and Rome. During the middle ages as per formal decree issued by the church in the twelfth century monks were prohibited from "blood-letting" or performing operations. This effectively relegated wound treatment, bleeding and bone-setting to barbers and women. Women were particularly valued for their skill in ob

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) or Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is an autosomal-dominant disorder that frequently presents with epistaxis and gastrointestinal bleeding which may be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We describe a 48-year-old monk with familiar history of HHT, who presented with frequent epistaxes and symptoms of ferropenic anemia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed innumerable telangiectasias in the stomach. The patient underwent three sessions with argon plasma coagulation treatment but the results were poor. We also review the literature on the pathophys

A retrospective study was undertaken on 171 patients who had suffered a subcapital fracture of the neck of the femur between 1982 and 1986. The aim was to compare the dislocation rates in bipolar and monopolar endoprostheses. The basic surgical approaches were utilized: the posterior and direct lateral. Four endoprostheses were employed: Thompson's Moore's (monopolar), Monk's 'hard top', and Charnley-Hastings' (bipolar). There was no significant difference in the dislocation rates between monopolar and bipolar devices. It is concluded that the bipolar devices do not offer any additional protec

Historic artworks constitute a visual corpus for dermatology education; however, the literature has not been systematically evaluated against contemporary educational standards. This review characterizes published artworks depicting dermatologic disease and assesses their curriculum alignment, clinical accessibility, and skin tone diversity. This was conducted following PRISMA guidelines across 4 databases. Studies were included if they analyzed dermatologic conditions depicted in historic art and provided clinical diagnoses. Data were extracted on artwork characteristics, presence with the Am

Psoriasis, a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder, encompasses various subtypes, including guttate, pustular, erythrodermic, and the most common type, plaque psoriasis. Irrespective of the subtype, psoriasis can manifest with multisystemic presentations, including psoriatic arthritis, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, malignancies, chronic kidney disease (CKD), psychiatric illness, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Many comorbidities and concomitant conditions must be considered when selecting the most appropriate therapy for a patient (Kaushik et al., 2019 and Monks et al.

Bone disorders have been described in patients chronically infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A case of spontaneous supracondylar femoral fracture that occurred in a 58-year-old monk during meditation is reported. His AIDS disease was controlled with combination antiretroviral therapy. Vitamin D and calcium had been added 3yr before since osteoporosis was detected by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). At the time of the fracture, the patient was on treatment with 35mg every week of sodium risedronate, 1000mg of calcium, and 400IU of Vitamin D every day. Clinical use of DXA

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) of the liver with cerebral and pulmonary metastasis was diagnosed in a Tibetan monk who initially presented with severe headache to an emergency department in Germany. Multiple lesions with perifocal oedema and severe compression of the third ventricle were seen with computed tomography (CT) of the brain. Glioma or cerebral metastasis of a hitherto undiagnosed abdominal or pulmonary malignancy was suspected. CT scans of the lung and liver demonstrated further tumorous masses. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed the cystic nature of the cerebral lesions

Toxoplasma gondii infections are common in humans and animals worldwide. T. gondii causes mortality in several species of marine mammals, including threatened Southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris) and endangered Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi). Marine mammals are now considered sentinels for environmental exposure to protozoan agents contaminating marine waters, including T. gondii oocysts. Marine mammals also serve as food for humans and can result in foodborne T. gondii infections in humans. The present review summarizes worldwide information on the prevalence of clinical and sub

Plain radiographs are often taken to localize fishbones which lodge in the oropharynx and hypopharynx, but which are not seen on clinical examination. Fishbones which are thus revealed can then be removed by endoscopy. For a lateral neck radiograph to be useful in excluding a fishbone when mirror examination is difficult or fails to reveal a foreign body, it is important to know which types of fishbone are radio-opaque. We used a pig's neck preparation to simulate a human neck to determine the radio-opacity of the bones of 14 different species of fish eaten in the British Isles. We conclude th

Ancient and medieval literature contain few case reports of specific syndromes. But there is no lack of such accounts in theological literature, with its long tradition of gathering and documenting individual case studies involving miracle cures--a practice which stretches from the ancient sanctuaries of Asclepius to today's places of pilgrimage. Among the many miracles attributed to St. Francis, complied around 1260 by his biographer, St. Bonaventura, is the case of a young monk afflicted by a sudden hemiplegia accompanied by aphasia and mental confusion. According to legend, he was miraculou

Research has established that sexually abusive priests often use grooming strategies on victims. Recently, researchers have proposed a behavioral taxonomy used specifically by clergy who sexually abuse children. Because this nascent taxonomy has only been studied once using a limited sample of sexually abusive priests, we seek to replicate and expand on its findings using a sample of abusive clergy from a separate institution. Specifically, we analyzed files of 18 monks in Minnesota who were credibly accused of sexual abuse. Using a deductive approach, we searched through these files in an eff

INTRODUCTION: There is a notable lack of scientific data on the prevalence and risk factors of halitosis among monastic populations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of halitosis and its associated risk factors among monastic residents in Vietnam.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in four monasteries, enrolling 47 monks and 71 nuns. Data on demographics, oral hygiene behaviors, and clinical oral health status were collected through questionnaires and dental examinations. Halitosis was assessed using both organoleptic evaluation and self-reported measures. Logistic reg
