The return of the Inseminator: Eutelegenesis in past and contemporary reproductive ethics.

Eugenicists in the 1930s and 1940s emphasised our moral responsibilities to future generations and the importance of positively selecting traits that would benefit humanity. In 1935 Herbert Brewer recommended 'Eutelegenesis' (artificial insemination with sperm from specially selected males) so that that future generations are not only protected from hereditary disease but also become more intelligent and fraternal than us. The development of these techniques for human use and animal husbandry was the catalyst for the cross fertilization of moral ideas and the development of a critical procreat

Interprofessionals' definitions of moral resilience.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe common characteristics and themes of the concept of moral resilience as reported by interprofessional clinicians in health care. BACKGROUND: Research has provided an abundance of data on moral distress with limited research to resolve and help negate the detrimental effects of moral distress. This reveals a critical need for research on how to mitigate the negative consequences of moral distress that plague nurses and other healthcare providers. One promising direction is to build resilience as an individual strategy concurrently with interventions to build a

Moral competence and conduct disorder among Filipino children in conflict with the law.

AIMS: The numbers of children in conflict with the law continue to rise in Asia, yet few studies have been conducted regarding factors associated with it. It has been theorized that children with conduct disorder represent majority of children in conflict with the law, and that poor moral competence mediates the association between conduct disorder and antisocial behavior. This study aimed to present a profile of Filipino children in conflict with the law, determine the prevalence of conduct disorder in the sample, and investigate variables associated with conduct disorder. METHODS: This was

Building Moral Community in an Age of Polarization: A Model for Reconciling Rights of Conscience in Healthcare Organizations.

Responding to conscientious objection and participation declarations to various morally contentious medical services requires a careful, inclusive, and comprehensive approach in reconciling the right of conscience of involved parties. In this paper, we make a case that the traditional discourse of whether or not to accommodate conscience-based requests does not adequately support complex, team-based healthcare systems in addressing emerging areas of moral controversy in medicine, particularly in this era of polarization. We describe how key parties in our organization developed an inclusive an

Faith-informed professionalism and gender interaction in nursing.

Contemporary nursing practice increasingly takes place within culturally, religiously, and ethically plural healthcare environments. Although professional standards provide a shared ethical foundation, limited conceptual attention has been given to how nurses' religious moral identities influence ethical reasoning during cross-gender care. Existing discussions of professionalism remain largely grounded in secular ethical perspectives, leaving insufficient exploration of how faith-based moral traditions may contribute to professional identity and moral agency. This paper examines gender interac

The role of causal and intentional judgments in moral reasoning in individuals with high functioning autism.

In the present study, we investigated the ability to assign moral responsibility and punishment in adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS), using non-verbal cartoons depicting an aggression, an accidental harm or a mere coincidence. Participants were asked to evaluate the agent's causal and intentional roles, his responsibility and the punishment he deserves for his action. Adults with HFA/AS did not differ in judgments of suffering and causality from adults with typical development. However, subtle difficulties with judgments of intentional action and moral judgments

Ritualized embodiment and moral self-cultivation: a Confucian model of psychological transformation.

This article develops a cross-cultural theoretical model of moral-psychological transformation by reinterpreting Confucian self-cultivation as a system of ritualized embodiment. Situated within theoretical and philosophical psychology, the article asks how bodily discipline, ritual form, and culturally mediated repetition may reorganize attention, affect, conduct, habit, and moral agency. Drawing on embodied cognition, moral psychology, ritual theory, cultural psychology, and Confucian philosophical discourse, the study proposes the Confucian Embodied Self-Cultivation Model. The model is groun

The Eclipse of Conviction: Conscience, Moral Authority, and Disagreement in the Church.

This article analyzes persistent moral disagreement within the contemporary church through a distinction between opinion and conviction as competing forms of moral reasoning. Drawing upon Alasdair MacIntyre's account of moral fragmentation and Charles Taylor's analysis of expressive individualism, it argues that ecclesial conflict intensifies when moral claims detach from shared standards of truth. When conscience functions as a site of personal authenticity rather than as judgment ordered toward objective moral reality, doctrinal authority weakens, and disagreement becomes resistant to resolu

A model of moral justice for medical universities: A structural equation modeling approach to ethical leadership and organizational integrity.

BACKGROUND: Human resources are central to organizational progress, where moral justice plays a key role in promoting fairness, ethics, and sustainable development. In medical universities-where education, clinical care, and administration intersect-moral justice is crucial for maintaining trust and integrity. However, there is a lack of validated models tailored to this unique context. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a conceptual model of moral justice tailored to the unique context of medical universities. Narrative therapy group intervention for nurses' moral resilience: A feasibility study.

BackgroundEthically complex care exposes nurses to persistent moral distress, harming well-being, integrity, and care quality. Moral resilience offers a targeted response, but intervention evidence is scarce. Because narrative therapy enables meaning-making and identity re-authoring, it may cultivate moral agency and integrity.AimTo develop and refine a narrative therapy-based group intervention for nurses' moral resilience and to examine its feasibility and acceptability in a pilot study, with exploratory assessment of outcome trends.DesignA preliminary group intervention program aimed at sup

Clinicians' criteria for fetal moral status: viability and relationality, not sentience.

The antiabortion movement is increasingly using ostensibly scientific measurements such as 'fetal heartbeat' and 'fetal pain' to provide 'objective' evidence of the moral status of fetuses. However, there is little knowledge on how clinicians conceptualise and operationalise the moral status of fetuses. We interviewed obstetrician/gynaecologists and neonatologists on this topic since their practice regularly includes clinical management of entities of the same gestational age. Contrary to our expectations, there was consensus among clinicians about conceptions of moral status regardless of spe

Moral sensitivity and professional quality of life in EMS personnel: a cross-sectional multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Moral sensitivity plays a crucial role in clinical decision-making and patient interactions among Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. Although moral sensitivity and professional quality of life have been studied in hospital-based healthcare providers, little evidence exists regarding EMS personnel, who face unique challenges such as heavy workloads, workplace violence, and frequent ethical dilemmas in unpredictable environments. These gaps highlight the necessity of investigating the relationship between moral sensitivity and professional quality of life in this context.

Moral emotions and auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Adolescence and early adulthood are characterized by the development of cognitive and social skills necessary for autonomous functioning in adult roles. As classically described by Erik Erikson, this developmental process involves forging a meaningful sense of identity, comprising a worldview, set of moral values, and occupational aspirations. This may require individuals questioning or defying the expectations and norms they have learned within the social context of their upbringing; simultaneously they remain acutely sensitive to the judgment of their peers. This developmental period encompa

Moral decision-making in patients with neurodegenerative diseases: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Moral decision-making, a core component of social cognition, relies on integrating affective and cognitive processes supported by distributed neural networks. Neurodegenerative diseases disrupt these systems to varying degrees, offering unique models to investigate the neural bases of moral cognition. This review aimed to systematically examine moral decision-making deficits across neurodegenerative diseases, delineate disease-specific patterns of moral cognition impairment, and highlight conceptual and methodological gaps to inform future research and clinical assessment. Compromised Conscience: A Scoping Review of Moral Injury Among Firefighters, Paramedics, and Police Officers.

BACKGROUND: Public Safety Personnel (e.g., firefighters, paramedics, and police officers) are routinely exposed to human suffering and need to make quick, morally challenging decisions. Such decisions can affect their psychological wellbeing. Participating in or observing an event or situation that conflicts with personal values can potentially lead to the development of moral injury. Common stressors associated with moral injury include betrayal, inability to prevent death or harm, and ethical dilemmas. Potentially psychologically traumatic event exposures and post-traumatic stress disorder c

Exploring the Views and Experiences of Moral Distress Among Newly Graduated Registered Nurses in Saudi Arabia: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed-Methods Study Protocol.

Background: Moral distress is a significant concern in nursing, particularly among newly graduated registered nurses transitioning into professional practice. Limited experience, high workloads, and exposure to ethically challenging situations may negatively affect well-being and contribute to early-career attrition. Evidence on how NGRNs experience and manage moral distress globally and in Saudi Arabia remains limited, and the role of healthcare organisational factors in shaping this phenomenon is not yet well understood. Aim: This study aims to examine the experiences of NGRNs regarding mora

The forms and limits of medical ethics.

As medical ethics has evolved over the past several decades, it has come to be regarded as a domain of applied ethics, that is, the application of a rationally based, philosophical theory to moral problems in health care. But an array of difficulties arise in the attempt to apply general moral theories or norms to concrete problems, difficulties that expose the incompleteness and indeterminacy of philosophical moral theory. The doubtful ability of applied ethics to be practically helpful has led to the development of two main competitors. One is the attempt to reprise and rehabilitate the trad

The Sacred, the Sinful, and the Shamed: The Association Between Compulsive Sexual Behavior, Moral Disapproval, and Sexual Shame Among Jewish Religious Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) has recently been recognized as a possible disorder (CSBD) by the World Health Organization (ICD-11) and may affect a significant portion of adolescents. Yet the relationship between CSB, religious values, and sexual shame remains underexplored in this population. This study investigated how CSB, moral disapproval, and sexual shame intersect among Orthodox Jewish adolescents. METHODS: Drawing on a sample of 1,050 adolescents (63% boys and 37% girls, Mage = 17.39, SD = 1.36), the study examined the role of moral disapproval, which arises when sexual
